shady-lady··on Portacle – A Portable Common Lisp Development Environment
Just downloaded this a few days ago and it's really cool.

Would love to see this all in one for Clojure (incl. self contained standalone emacs)

shady-lady··on AWS documentation is now open source and on GitHub
well, it depends on what type of comments you guys find acceptable & would want to see when you're deciding whether to merge the changes in.

imagine down the line somebody submitting changes & the message isn't the reason why those changes are there[0] but instead a copy paste of the changes[1]

[0] e.g. "remove fuzzy language"/"update intro to more accurately reflect addition of new services"

[1] not denying that sometimes this makes more sense.

shady-lady··on AWS documentation is now open source and on GitHub
I would reject that PR.

Something like that change should have a message explaining why that change is proposed.

Unfortunate that the blogpost itself can't be forked :p

shady-lady··on Ask HN: How has your experience with AWS Lambda been?
I tried using API Gateway and Lambda to create some dumb endpoints late last year (most just return static data with some returning updateable data).

All endpoints/operations exposed through API Gateway.

Thought it would be a lot simpler to set up than it was. It's pretty convoluted doing API Gateway -> Lambda, especially when you make changes.

I had thought it would be way simpler. single click define endpoint, then just write some code.

The AWS UI most definitely got in the way trying to accomplish this.

shady-lady··on European Union plans to tax tech giants on local revenue
> pay where you generate income.

This doesn't make sense & defeats the point of European Single Market. Sales tax is paid on & goes to the country the item was purchased in.

What does make sense is revenue being realized in the country of the company that sold* the product/service. *this being a whole other can of worms.

The issues some countries(France/Germany) have are:

a) that their country wasn't chosen to be the entrypoint to the EU market

b) firms are realizing the revenue in a country which technically owns the product/service IP but is not(in all likelihood) the company's main base.

So, let's pretend b) is a legit issue & we change that. The revenue from the sale is not going to go to some other EU country(why would it?). It's going back to the "main" country of the host company.

So, let's say $US-multinational didn't pay tax in Ireland or Luxembourg. That money would just flow direct to $caribbean-country(which now would hold all the relevant IP etc.) and held there - similar to what happens now. Because, even if Europe changes it's laws, $US-multinational still gets to game the US tax system cos it's 'better' than paying more in taxes than you legally have to.

The next logical choice is for the EU to just bang an import tariff on all US goods/services and let the consuming country collect it. Let's see how that plays out...

shady-lady··on American companies are suppressing wages for many workers
Suppressing wages & over-working employees.

For salaried jobs in all companies, the only requirement for unpaid overtime should be responding to emergencies. So for engineering, this would mean always 40hr week unless dealing with out of hours production downtime.

There is way too much abuse happening(frequently implicitly).

shady-lady··on Linux'izing your Windows PC into a dev machine – Part 2
> You sound like you are just used to do everything with Windows and never have considered seriously to use Linux software, I guess you don't know most of what exists there.

Although this comment is not directed at me, I feel obliged to throw it back at you: Have you ever used Windows?

The odd time I need to create/edit images, there is no equal on Linux for paint.net. None. not pinta, not GIMP. Nothing else hits the feature/complexity sweet spot like paint.net. There also is no equal on Mac.

Secondly, we're in a world where Webex still exists. It is very easy to use on Windows & Mac, & all functionality is available. Using it on Linux involves using a more limited version which runs on JVM and involves you having to figure out what dependencies to install. Using Webex in a VM isn't feasible as there is a noticeable ~3 second delay for voice.

> Libreoffice or Softmaker office is available

They do exist but Excel simply puts them to shame.

Over the past 15 years, I've used Windows & Linux both for personal use & work. I've never been in a situation where either OS suffices on it's own, for either work or personal.

I've used Mac OS for work and it was sufficient on it's own - polished applications, alongside powerful dev tools. However, when it came to spending my own money, I decided a 2 in 1 with Windows & Linux was a much better buy for me than a Mac, especially when it came to bang for buck.

shady-lady··on Linux'izing your Windows PC into a dev machine – Part 2
> First, my impression is that Microsoft Surface hardware is, too, heavily advertised in developer forums and social media

I use a Lenovo Yoga X1 2 in 1. Using the laptop form factor, linux works great(as I had expected). However, using as a 2 in 1, it is not a good polished experience.

> What does it mean to have touch on a software developer system?

It means when I purchase my own personal system(which I do intermittent dev on), I can buy a multi purpose device which replaces the need for me to buy both a laptop & a tablet.

shady-lady··on Linux'izing your Windows PC into a dev machine – Part 2
Touchscreen support on a 2-in-1 laptop when consuming content is a much better experience in Windows than in Linux. But it's nice to have nix tools available without rebooting. brings windows closer to mac in terms of (polished OS apps w/ nix power tooling)

All (2 in 1) screen related things on Windows just work better.

Second the emacs tips though(bar tramp support hassle what with lack of ssh command on win - there are workarounds though)

shady-lady··on Mountain View approves 10,000 homes by Google's North Bayshore project (2017)
> In Europe or even New York, you can rent flats which are large enough for a family and constructed to give you a sense of privacy, even with density

Not in Ireland. The last housing boom (late 90s/early 00s) gave us poor quality apartment blocks along with deficient building control regulations which in essence allowed developers to self-certify.

Which leads me to agree with your statements: "Every time they mass-build housing, the results are horrible" & "aimed at single 20 somethings without any thought to the long term or general community"

Made horrible as:

1) plenty of work so sub standard builders get away with it.

2) plenty of work so jobs are rushed

3) far left shouting for loads of (mainly free) housing to b e built right now.

4) plenty of work that any and all officials rush through decision making/inspection so that they don't have get chewed out of it.

Even with good facilities around and location being very walkable, nothing can compensate for not having a nice peaceful place to lay your head.

shady-lady··on Apocalypse now: London’s property crash has begun
Interesting. How long ago did that get introduced and is there any studies on impact on prices?
shady-lady··on The Evil Within the Comparison Functions
I love these PVS-Studio write ups.
shady-lady··on JSON Schema
XSD gets thumbs up from me.

Generate useful docs. Easy to read to get a handle on data structure. Also can be used as runtime contracts. somewhat similar but v. limited compared to Racket Contracts and Clojure spec.

Not to mention super tooling for interacting with schema (like XMLSpy)

In conclusion, having schemas for data structures(especially at boundaries) is absolutely necessary to maintain control & visibility over data.

shady-lady··on For AI to thrive, it must explain itself
Random amount of nodes with random connections assigned random weightings until something works best.

Not so sure it's possible for anyone to seriously claim to be able to explain the inner workings.

Biggest problem with these I can see is that there is more than one way to arrive at the given answer.

Simplistic analogy, let's say the equivalent nodes were represented by the value 20. Was this number a result of 5 * 4, 4 * 5, 10 * 2, 10 + 10 etc..

Right now, it doesn't matter, we're all just happy that 20 is correct and works for our use case. Maybe that will be good enough but I doubt it.

shady-lady··on A Generation Lost in the Bazaar (2012)
> Each evolutionary step was selected because it worked

not really. selected is the wrong word - survived is more appropriate. evolution isn't a set of preordained occurrences.

it's a random mutation which happened to survive - this can be due to many reasons (only one of which is "it worked")

shady-lady··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Glad Tree Style Tabs ported over to 57...but kinda annoying I needed to uninstall/re-install add-on to get it working again
shady-lady··on When I asked Tinder for my data, it sent me 800 pages of my deepest secrets
By any chance, is there an English version available?
shady-lady··on WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton to leave company
Dunno where in Europe you're based but WhatsApp is the defacto messaging app in Irl & UK
shady-lady··on YouTube Programming Channels
Checked it out. Nothing of great interest. No curation or comments at all. Just seems to be a repackaging of youtube search results channels?
shady-lady··on Ask HN: What is your profession?

shady-lady··on Claude Shannon’s method for formulating and solving problems
Waiting for kindle version to drop on Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mind-Play-Shannon-Invented-Informat...)

How much do the rights actually cost? As in, is it feasible for me to purchase these rights and sell Kindle edition myself?

shady-lady··on Timescale, an open-source time-series SQL database for PostgreSQL
Wow. impressive. would have thought there would have been more overhead.
shady-lady··on Mint 18.2: Still the best Linux desktop
No, it's not.

Used it for years due to the hype. Switched to Fedora & Gnome - delighted ever since

shady-lady··on Timescale, an open-source time-series SQL database for PostgreSQL
What is the extra size on disk as a result of using this? I'm guessing there's some overhead?
shady-lady··on The secret to a long and healthy life? Eat less
> small meals every 3 hours

I can't imagine what food combinations would constitute a small meal that would be eaten 5/6 times a day. Sample menu for a full day?

shady-lady··on iMac Pro
> Billowing smoke. Torrential rain. A wheat field in the wind. With up to 18 cores and Hyper-Threading, iMac Pro lets you build and render particle systems of all kinds — static or animated, 2D or 3D — with ease.

I always thought every effect listed here was catered for by GPU power, not CPU power?

shady-lady··on Show HN: Interface Lovers – Interviews with designers
I ended clicking through to Stripes homepage(as it was mentioned in an interview under 'What pieces of work are you most proud of?').

I'm not a fan of partial images being shown at default browser zoom - seems too inexact compared to rest of Stripe site. Had to zoom out to 80% to have all device images shown.

1) stripe homepage at browser zoom 100% (http://imgur.com/IhhWWLf)

2) stripe homepage at browser zoom 80% (http://imgur.com/Jq6a8fI)

3) all other content on page seems centered as normal. (http://imgur.com/KIZSUuL)

[Not sure if there's a handier way/program to include some kind of measurement ruler on images.]

shady-lady··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2017)
Just FYI, every linked role under the 'We're Hiring!' section here[1] is 404 (excluding the NY role).

Are you/somebody else able to expand on scope & technologies involved in the Dublin role?

shady-lady··on Ryzen is for Programmers
Not sure if intent but this is AMD issue.

Having experienced first hand AMD driver instability on both Windows & Linux, AMD have lost my custom for the next 10 years..

Multiple re-occurring driver crashes using their main graphics card product line(RX380) on Windows 10.. So, pretty mainstream and yet having driver crashing (even when doing non-intensive tasks e.g. web browsing)

For the record, I'm not so sure Nvidia is any more stable either. The only (constantly) stable graphics provider over the years has been Intel's on-board graphics.

shady-lady··on What if we made video conferencing work?
Can't speak as to how it scales but I had to use both webex and Zoom in the past year. Paid corporate accounts etc.. No affiliation to either.

Webex linux support is unbelievably poor(literally, greater than a 1/2 days work to get it installed on linux). Sound quality deteriorates on international calls. Just really crappy experience overall.

Zoom has rpms/deb packages available. Installation- 30 secs.. Sound quality was crystal clear on international calls.

Webex is one of the few product offerings that makes me truly angry.
