shadowwolf007··on The 12 step process to download Microsoft SQL Server Express 2014
I'm kinda interested in which pieces are MSI problems. There's a lot of strangeness in msi it generally it tends to work out pretty well unless you're doing weird stuff.

I'm not saying you're wrong - just interested!

Honestly, SQL Server is one of the worst constructed and thought up installations I've ever seen - I don't think MSI had anything to do with it.

I've seen some bad installations, but whoever made that one should not be proud of that work.

An ex-coworker and I are both endorsed for endorsements. The system is such an utter joke - the worst is getting endorsed for things and skills I don't care to advertise.

Sorry about that I didn't see your reply! Because I have to use phone it's challenging to type out all I did. While I achieved it, I wouldn't say it's sensible or easy!

Anyway, you have to turn off c++, c++ exceptions, security checks in compiler options. In linker set the entry point to main and turn off error reporting. From there it's finding the right lib which is dependent on arch, etc.

To be honest it's not worth doing. I only knew of it because I had to patch a vs2010 exe to run on windows 2000.

Asm output from a c program that prints hello world to the screen. You can figure out the other sections I'm sure.

No win main or other similar concepts here and built using vs2012.

The columns don't really line up will in the invoice and website in iOS7 chrome. The description in the invoice bleeds in to the second row. Same with my account in the top navigation/menu bar.

Otherwise really cool - I will probably use this even though I'm a little less than thrilled over the name honestly.

That's awesome! I don't like the idea of soylent (I can't eat a lot of things so I want to like the things I eat), but this seems cool.

If you could keep it at or under 200mg (preferably FDA low sodium of 140mg) I would try some.

shadowwolf007··on Show HN: MealSquares, our whole food Soylent alternative
Are you guys going to consider a low sodium version? I noticed it appears to be gluten free which is good, but there's a significant portion of the population that's on low sodium diets. Most people don't follow them because it's incredibly hard. Organic food is just about as bad as processed foods (or worse sometimes).

I can't participate in any meal plans either because of this and it definitely sucks.

shadowwolf007··on Announcing the new Roslyn-powered .NET Framework Reference Source
I'm not sure if you're meaning something else, but is /M or /MP not the direction for you? Though C# compiles can be pretty long, my experience is it's usually File I/O and ancillary tasks that take up the majority of the time spent building. Even our primary product which is an absolutely enormous webapp with tons of projects takes only 11 minutes to fully compile and about 5 of that is just shuffling files around.

To take from another conversation, msbuild is very powerful but it's not very usable at all. So much tribal knowledge and secret handshakes you can't learn unless you have a contact in devdiv.

Beyond that, I've opened 3 incidents with Microsoft in the past and they've been nothing short of amazing. One guy even busted out an assembler and stepped through my code to identify that our issue was actually a deliberately closed accidental exploitation path. Enormously frustrating at the time, but he even provided a workaround for us but, like you say, it took several months.

To be specifically productive though: I feel like Roselyn does provide lots of value to developers in terms of what VS plugins can do. There are infinity re-implementations of the MS Compiler out there in terms of plugins and analysis tools. Would be nice to have everyone at least speaking the same language. I think the other thing this initiative does is put the license out there with permissiveness and clarity. Mono can feel comfortable lifting the concepts and integrating it in to their own without worrying about being sued now. This is all great things that they are making available their compiler as a tool and non-platform limited licensing. But - it's only a step it's not the end-game.

What are things you think really improve developers' lives that microsoft used to build they don't build now?

shadowwolf007··on Japanese Travel Tips for Visiting America
Oh don't get me wrong: I feel crappy for the kitchen staff too. I actually thought it would be cool to get in to the restaurant biz until I learned about it.

I don't know how kitchen staff don't go insane. Or maybe they do. Which is why I am always super nice to the staff at restaurants.

shadowwolf007··on Japanese Travel Tips for Visiting America
Honestly as someone who lives in USA I hate this practice. Every time I am mad and want to tip low I think hey they have a family maybe or just had a crappy day this time and I don't want to deny them the ability to pay rent. The idea that my skimping on a $3 tip may be the difference between being able to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee after a crappy day at work or not makes me tip no less than 20%.

I'd rather they just be paid a livable wage and tips be optional.

As someone who has been in this situation, I can attest the only difference between the two situations is that if you go to a lawyer your mom doesn't get all treatments in the meantime.

Fortunately for me, the people at Mayo Clinic are amazing and gave treatment they knew we couldn't even start to dream to pay for. Not everyone is so lucky.

Ended up dropping the whole thing though. And lawyer said it was slam dunk malpractice, but reality bites and it's amazing what hospitals can do.
