shadeslayer··on Making GitLab faster
I've been using gitlab for the past few weeks to host a couple of repositories, it's awesome so far since it's the only solution that allowed me to mirror a repo AND create my own branch on the mirrored repository.

The only complaint I really have is the fact that I have to append a ".git" to the http url to clone the repository. Alternatively, it'd be nice to have a git:// read only url too.

shadeslayer··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2015)
I think you guys have a very unique and amazing interview process btw :D
shadeslayer··on The Meson Build System
I'm curious as to why one needs this in a CMake world?
shadeslayer··on Show HN: File.io – Ephemeral file sharing
Isn't https://curl.io/ the same thing?
shadeslayer··on Your Ubuntu-based container image is probably a copyright violation
All Ubuntu packages contain the string "Ubuntu" in their version string, could entirely be considered copyright violation since you're shipping a trademark.
shadeslayer··on Plasma Mobile
Containerized apps are coming to Linux soon, there's some effort going on over here : http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xdg-app

There's also Limba : https://github.com/ximion/limba

shadeslayer··on Plasma Mobile
HW Expansion : Not that I'm aware of.

Donations : https://www.kde.org/

Thanks for the support :)

shadeslayer··on Plasma Mobile
>Let's be honest, even if they did have a talented team of designers nobody would use this.

Why?

shadeslayer··on Plasma Mobile
> ... things move slowly ...

Why do you think things move slowly? KDE releases Frameworks 5 every month, and Plasma 5 every 3 months, that's pretty fast in my opinion.

shadeslayer··on SFC and FSF Achieve GPL Compliance for Canonical IP Policy
Just a quick follow up to this, I just had a look at the X11 license ( https://techbase.kde.org/Policies/Licensing_Policy#X11_Licen... ) which mentions a 'copy' of the software. In my interpretation of the license it also means a binary copy.
shadeslayer··on SFC and FSF Achieve GPL Compliance for Canonical IP Policy
Thanks alot for raising these issues with the FSF, really, it seems like very few people actually care about these issues :(
shadeslayer··on SFC and FSF Achieve GPL Compliance for Canonical IP Policy
I think sfconservancy sums it up pretty well with "full permission to redistribute Ubuntu as a whole remains in question."

While I'm happy that there is full GPL compliance, there are other parts of the stack such as X11 which are not GPL and don't mention anything about not adding additional restrictions ontop of the binaries.

shadeslayer··on Douglas Coupland: Moody
Try reading Generation X [1] by the same guy, I'm still trying to make sense of the book after 2 weeks of finishing it :P

shadeslayer··on Mark Shuttleworth orders Kubuntu leader to step down
Not exactly, the problem was that Canonical collected some money during 2012 to 2013 that was supposedly earmarked for Ubuntu flavors. However, there is no accounting for that money at the moment, though something is being worked on.

There's also the much heated debate about Canonical's IP licensing policy which is quite vague and broad IMHO. It also goes against the FOSS licenses such as the GPL and LGPL. Jonathan bought this up with the Ubuntu CC and has been pursuing this for 3 years, without much luck so far. He raised the issue again recently and has been reprimanded for supposedly using language that violates the CoC, however there has so far been no evidence backing this claim.

Due to the above the CC and Mark Shuttleworth have asked Jonathan to leave leadership positions within Ubuntu.

Disclosure: I'm on the Kubuntu Council, so I might have a biased opinion. These are purely personal views.

shadeslayer··on Learning the Cello as an Adult (1997)
As someone who's been learning the violin for the past year and a half, I completely agree that one can pick up the violin as an adult.

One of the first things I did was to get a teacher to guide me through it, and that has helped enormously. While I do like western classical music, I find compositions from modern Japanese composers such as Joe Hiashi much more fun to play.

shadeslayer··on Ask HN: Best developer notebook in 2015?
Here's what I'm looking for personally :

- 16 GB RAM

- Intel Iris

- Core i5/i7

- 13" - 15"

- Under 3 pounds

- UHD+ Screen

Here's everything that comes close, though all of them one common pitfall, RAM is limited to 8 GB

UX301LA

Thinkpad X1 Carbon ( No Iris as well )

The ones that don't make the grade :

Macbook Pro 13" - Didn't like the keyboard, little to no keytravel

shadeslayer··on Ask HN: Best developer notebook in 2015?
Same boat as you, I have a Late 2011 model, with the extended warranty, burnt through one motherboard because of the silly heating issues, but even that after ~3 years of use, the month before the warranty expired.

New one has been working just fine for the past 1 year. I've stuck more RAM in the machine over the past 2 years, but I really want a UHD+ display now, however I can't find anything which fits my needs :(

So I think I'm going to stick to my MBP 2011 for now.

shadeslayer··on Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition
Isn't the ubuntu phone using the RTM archive which has a different version number? :P
shadeslayer··on [dead]
As a contributor to Ubuntu ( on the desktop bits ), I find this article quite offensive. There are a ton of smart people working on Ubuntu Server ( both working at Canonical and otherwise ) and this kind of click bait just disparage's their efforts to provide a amazing product :/
shadeslayer··on Changing Lives at HackLondon
Ofcourse! I'd be delighted to! As long as they don't have a age barrier ( the one in Barcelona was organized for under 25's only )
shadeslayer··on Changing Lives at HackLondon
I was at Kairos Hacks last weekend, which was running parallel to HackLondon and I most certainly echo the same sentiment, it was a great outlet for a lot of my pent up energy and I'm really grateful to MLH and all of their volunteers for being awesome and providing us a very positive environment for us to make awesome things!

The event was covered here http://blog.kairossociety.org/kairos-hacks-kicks-off-in-barc... here http://blog.kairossociety.org/kairos-hacks-barcelona-and-the...

I ended up writing a tool that extracts meaningful information from the Spanish elections : https://github.com/shadeslayer/dataminer , which can be further visualized on a website. Its not the most proficient code ever, but it's a start :)

shadeslayer··on MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues
I've had this for quite a while now, went through 2 motherboard replacements one after the other for this exact defect. It's good to know that they'll still change it for another couple of years in case things go sideways.
shadeslayer··on Ruby 2.2.0 Released
I contributed a small patch earlier this month, but used their bug tracker to submit patch, turn around time was ~24 hours I think. See bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/10551

So I think all of their patches need to go through the bug tracker.

shadeslayer··on Principles of Distributed Computing
Would you recommend this for someone who is just beginning with the basics of Distributed Computing and does not have a CS background? If not, any recommendations? :)

I'm very much interested in distributed computing and was recently reading up about things like the Raft consensus algorithm.

shadeslayer··on Announcing Ubuntu Core, with snappy transactional updates
I recommend looking at live-build and ubuntu-defaults-image if you're looking to create a ubuntu derivative. If not, ignore my comment ;)
shadeslayer··on Technical preview of Kubuntu Linux ISO with KDE Plasma 5.0
This is a 64 bit ISO, I reckon I should clarify that in the naming, I'll fix it with the next ISO's , please do let me know how it goes with EFI systems, we're planning on moving the ISO building infrastructure to the same one as Ubuntu, so we'll get full EFI support as soon as that happens ( in a few weeks I guess )
shadeslayer··on Technical preview of Kubuntu Linux ISO with KDE Plasma 5.0
Sorry, but I don't see that happening since that would involve backporting Qt 5.3 as that is what upstream advises to use with Plasma 5, and backporting Qt5 is a huge hassle and a even bigger hassle to maintain the packages for the lifetime of the 14.04 release. However, fear not! You can try out Neon 5 which is built for Trusty! See https://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Using_Project_Neon_...
shadeslayer··on Technical preview of Kubuntu Linux ISO with KDE Plasma 5.0
Blog author here, let me know if you have questions! :D
shadeslayer··on Plasma 5 Brings a Cleaner Interface on Top of a New Graphics Stack
Congrats to the entire KDE team!
shadeslayer··on Intel: [We] will not carry XMir patches upstream.
Note that this seems like a purely political reason to not support xmir since the patch was initially signed off by the maintainer http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/com...
