shaan7··on DuckDuckGo was down
The notice helped me realize that Yahoo! Search still exists xD
shaan7··on Show HN: Pi-C.A.R.D, a Raspberry Pi Voice Assistant
Awesome. Side note: now my living room lights are white because I listened to this on speakers lol. I have the same wakeword xD
shaan7··on Show HN: Pi-C.A.R.D, a Raspberry Pi Voice Assistant
I've been a happy Rhasspy user and now even more excited for the future because I'm hoping the conversational style (similar to what OpenAI demo'd yesterday) will eventually come to the offline world as well. It is okay if I gotta buy a GPU to make that happen, or maybe we get luckier and it wont? Ok, maybe I'm getting too optimistic now
shaan7··on Popover API
Ok something is really wrong with my brain. I read this as "Poopover API", and it keeps on happening throughout the comments -.-
shaan7··on Google Fit APIs get shut down in 2025, might break fitness devices
I am using 2TB for now. Google One annual is €99.99/year while B2 would cost $6x2x12=$144 ~= €134 .

Even for 5TB Google is cheaper. Unless B2 have an option for annual pricing and its not obvious from the pricing page.

shaan7··on Google Fit APIs get shut down in 2025, might break fitness devices
For me it is to store encrypted backups of TBs of data on Google Drive. Simply because its the cheapest option (although its slow AF). I'd like to switch to something else if either the competition lowers prices or I make more monies :P
shaan7··on Scientists rename genes to stop Microsoft Excel from misreading them as dates (2020)
Call it cynicism but I think humans just prefer things to be implicit. I've been annoyed by how people do not want to be specific, but then rant about how someone did not understand exactly what they wanted.

A certain CEO says that we won't need programming languages because you will be able to program AI systems with natural language. Well, the problem with natural language is not that we do not have the tech, it is that natural language is too imprecise. People will, again, end up being dissatisfied by the output of AI systems and blame it on the tech, while the problem just remains that as humans we kinda suck at being explicit about what we want.

shaan7··on Blender Open Movies. Featuring all the production files, assets, and artwork
Big Buck Bunny is very funny, and Sintel is a cute story with a nice little song at the end.
shaan7··on Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
Agree. I think marketing teams killed RSS, they wanted you to "subscribe to our newsletter" and send you what _they_ thought was useful. You wouldn't do that if you already had RSS, so that needed to go.
shaan7··on UI is a function of your organization
Yup. I pickup my orders from Domino's quite regularly and it the tracker is reliable. The only thing that does happen is that they sometimes do mark it "Ready for pickup" while someone still needs to take the pizza from the oven and put it into a box. So I sometimes wait a minute seconds at the counter for that to happen.
shaan7··on Mozilla's new service tries to wipe your data off the web
It shows in your Google Account settings, takes me to https://one.google.com/dwr/dashboard
shaan7··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
Thats just parent's way of playing around with all the AI models reading this page xD
shaan7··on Indian government moves to ban ProtonMail after bomb threat
Ah my bad, I should have explicitly mentioned that merely a threat does not constitute a safety issue enough to justify a broad ban. If such a ban could prevent a real attack, then sure.

Yes, personally even I would feel disturbed and anxious when somebody threatens me, but it would be too broad to classify mental disturbance as a safety issue. I am saying this having survived an episode where my father was threatened for life.

shaan7··on Indian government moves to ban ProtonMail after bomb threat
Your statements are correct but they aren't relevant to parent's point. Blocking an email provider has absolutely no positive effect on the safety of the citizens. While it has the potential of a lot of negative effects, like the inability of other innocent citizens to use their email account. It is the same thing when the GoI went ahead and blocked pastebin.com because of a bunch of pastes.
shaan7··on It Can Be Done (2003)
It is even more fun for folks writing window managers, they have literal edge cases to deal with xD
shaan7··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
> I dunno what grand strategy is supposed to compete with that.

Agree 100%.

In its current state I find Firefox simply _better_ than Chrome - mostly due to how well integrated Multi-Account Containers are. Like you I am puzzled by exactly what is Firefox missing that it is a deal breaker for people. Is it just the occasional hiccup when using a Google/MS service? Some people mention 4K videos not playing properly - that sounds like an acceptable reason. But surely that still isn't a good reason for not being able to have Firefox as one's daily driver.

I have the same suspicion as you, Chrome's marketshare is simply because Google services are so popular and they direct you to Chrome, and that the most popular mobile OS (Android) runs Chrome by default.

shaan7··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
You are right, and I don't think the DMA applies only to Apple. If PS does not allow anything from other sources, then Sony will have to change too. The Unreal example is wrong though, there are other engines to choose from.
shaan7··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Yes, if the developers want to use Apple's App Store, they should pay for it, that is not the problem. The problem is that developers are forced to use Apple's App Store instead of another distribution platform. But now Apple is saying "Its okay if you want to use another distribution platform, but you still need to pay us". Why is that okay? (And no, an iPhone itself is not Apple's platform, once the user buys the phone, its their platform).
shaan7··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
> That is the situation we are looking at here, that to use the apps I want to use I have to use those stores. Which is ridiculous, and it is naive to think it isn't going to happen when it is the state of gaming right now.

Consider the alternative where the only place to install apps (and hence games) is the Windows Store. Would that really be better? Windows Store's update process is lot worse than Steam (flaky download status, no way to make backups etc), and in many cases Steam has better integration with local payment processors.

shaan7··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Don't like their T&C, don't use them. As simple as that. I do not like Trucaller's T&C, so I do not use it. If some day I don't like WhatsApp's T&C, I won't use it. My friends and family will be asked to contact me via Signal (as an example). To your examples with games, there are lots of games that I do not install simply because I don't like those launchers. Whats wrong with that? It is _my choice_. I am not forced to use only Windows Store, for example.

The argument that "because third party app stores can be shitty, they shouldn't be possible" is strange.

shaan7··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
> If you buy an iphone there is no one to compete

This. The problem is not the 30%, the problem is that iPhones do not have an option to buy apps from, lets say a Amazon Store or Epic Store.

shaan7··on Airlines will make $118B in extra fees
Did you eventually make a career in law? :D
shaan7··on A failed AI girlfriend product, and my lessons
Looks like the author removed that phrase eventually, I can't find it.
shaan7··on EU Digital Identity Reform: The Good, Bad and Ugly in the EIDAS Regulation
Yeah but it is quite frustrating that member states lobbied against having the backend services open to public review. I can only hope that states will not make such wallet login mandatory. My family moved to the EU from India to get away from Aadhar, only for this to happen -.-

At least the unique identifier thing didn't happen, for now ..

shaan7··on Podman Desktop v1.5 with Compose onboarding and enhanced Kubernetes pod data
Yep it is quite possible. For me the realization wasn't until the doctor specifically pointed it out that no lens will 100% correct Astigmatism. Then I googled around and read that dark text on light bg is much easier because the ghosting is less pronounced.

I miss my white-on-black Terminal though :(

shaan7··on Podman Desktop v1.5 with Compose onboarding and enhanced Kubernetes pod data
My bad, I did not mean a regression in Podman Desktop specifically, but UI engineering in general. A (couple of?) decades ago it was basically a given that apps will adjust to your system theme (except fancy stuff like Winamp).
shaan7··on Podman Desktop v1.5 with Compose onboarding and enhanced Kubernetes pod data
I had to hard facepalm reading the other replies to this. There are people suffering from things like Astigmatism (myself included) who have an extremely hard time, including headaches, using dark themes. People really need to be a bit more empathetic.

Also, as the OP pointed out, people somehow get angry when all you asked is for an app to follow the system's theme. It has been such a huge regression.

EDIT: typos and clarity

shaan7··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Um, you're making the wrong comparison. Apple can just offer a "locked" version of iPhone if you want that. You could buy a unlocked one for you, and a locked one for $whoever. iOS vs Android should not a safe vs unsafe argument, it should be a Gillette razor vs Philips razor argument.

Also, I don't think the only merit that iPhone brings is this so-called safety, it is also a very well engineered device. I'd like to buy one but the only thing that has held me back is how closed the ecosystem is. If the EU is able to force Apple to fix that, I might finally buy an iPhone for the first time :)

shaan7··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
> No, they don't need "freedom" to be tricked into installing crapware on their devices same way as I don't need "freedom" to cut my face with an open razor

But guess what, in the real world you do have the freedom to cut your face with an open razor. Still, you don't see everyone using one (unless they know what they're doing), they rather use a safe razor - they have the sensibility.

I find it demeaning that we "hackers" assume that a certain set of people will never learn about safety when it comes to computing. They can (they did with the razor), but they certainly won't when we give up on them.

shaan7··on Ask HN: Google Calendar Down?
Yep seems to be down here as well, only on the web though. The mobile app seems to be loading fine (unless its using cached data or something).
