shaaaaawn··on I saw RealPage's crappy rent-jacking-up software so you don't have to
This post hits close to home and could not be more accurate satire of the pains of property management. I spent a number of years building a competitor to RealPage's Resident Portal, ActiveBuilding (shoutout https://henrihome.com).

RealPage and Yardi dominate the industry with some of the worst software imaginable. The price fixing and competitiveness in the industry is a feature not a bug.

ActiveBuilding basically built thefacebook.com for residents where the sticky feature was online rent payment. They of course got bought by RealPage which continued to operate it as is for a long time with few improvements, but landlords were tied to the ecosystem and didn't really care about the resident experience as long as they could pay rent online and submit maintenance requests. Also who the F decided that they don't need spaces in Product names over there?! ActiveBuilding RealPage.

Love the work you put into this and the detail put into describing the features. One thing missing from the site. Why did you make it?

shaaaaawn··on Show HN: Give a Dime – Donate change from credit card purchases
When I worked at Bank of America I tried to do something similar with their Keep The Change program, allow customers to have their 'change' go to the charity of their choice instead of their savings account, I called it Give the Change. I could never get it past the product team so I'm glad to see this project pop up on HN today! Keep at it

I was recently trying to dig up the IDE's of the early internet publishing platforms like Geocities, Tripod, MySpace (1.0) to try and do a similar project. Could only find the archived pages/assets like this.
shaaaaawn··on YC Fellowship
Love to see YC branching out to those unable to migrate to SF immediately. As someone that's been through other incubators and been extremely underwlemed by my experiences; this is a fantastic idea. I know YC is open to all types of ideas and companies, but there is obviously a concentration on software/hardware related ideas. I'm curious if YC has funded any non-hardware/software startups? Any examples?

shaaaaawn··on ADP Sues Zenefits for Defamation

shaaaaawn··on ADP Begins to Roll Out a Zenefits Competitor
It's interesting, because if Zenefits had already IPO'd they absolutely would not be able to take this approach. Too much shareholder risk. And this is just as much a David Sacks thing as it is a Parker thing. I have to believe after my 10+ years in Financial Services that David Sacks already disliked ADP from his PayPal days. Zenefits is going to lose this battle, but it's about the war.
shaaaaawn··on The facts about ADP and Zenefits: Response to the claims made by Zenefits [pdf]
It's funny watching the Zenefits response: Bring in the yComb & Celebrity Investors (Jared Leto / Ashton Kutcher) to get public opinion on their side via twitter #ADPeeved and a Change.org petition. So far at least on social media there's not a lot of noise from impacted customers. Just negotiate an MSA, pay the fee, build a proper integration and perform better Risk Management in the future (like a $4.5B business should).
shaaaaawn··on The facts about ADP and Zenefits: Response to the claims made by Zenefits [pdf]
Agreed. Zenefits took an engineering/business shortcut by scraping and using the default 3rd party user credentials. It was only a matter of time before this got shut off. They'll do what every other large 3rd party does, sign an MSA of some sort, build a better integration, and pay a massive annual fee to ADP for access. This is Financial Services

Where is Japan in all this? If North Korea is in fact responsible, it seems like Japan should be the one weighing a "proportional response". They are certainly capable.

shaaaaawn··on Ask HN: Which is harder Front end or Back end?
It's really hard to get a friend into Web development. You can encourage, mentor, and guide them but someone has to be genuinely curious and excited about web development.

shaaaaawn··on Followr, Twitter Bots, and Ethical Considerations
Might be worth mentioning to reload the browser tab once installing the plugin. The new window didn't work as designed when I clicked Save and Run the first time. Worked fine when I opened a new tab to https://twitter.com/?followr=true

Interesting concept and I appreciate the idea of finding a more intelligent, less spammy way to use bots.

shaaaaawn··on Why I Wear a Disco Ball
Bahahah. Let me clarify, I've been managing peons like yourself since high school. I've already climbed the six figure ladder. The view wasn't to my liking. See I decided to quit & build products designed for social good, hence why I turned down a CIO role at a bank last week & turned down $125k work-from-home contract at Wells Fargo today. I can make money anytime I return a headhunters voicemail. Maybe that's why my parents are cool with the risk. Go ahead Google me, my resume speaks for itself.
shaaaaawn··on Why I Wear a Disco Ball
I just read this moments after giving in, allowing my dad to take a 401k loan in exchange for the title to my car (I insisted) to help me pay rent and keep my startup dreams afloat a cpl more months. Humility doesn't come easy for some of us. Thank you for sharing Will. I really needed to read this today.
