sh4rks··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
Restricting Internet use is only going to make them more curious. They'll go to a friends house and watch porn from there.

Probably better to just encourage them to live a healthy, outgoing lifestyle.

sh4rks··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
Students aren't looking for internships after 3 weeks though. You usually start applying at the end of the year. By then, your CS course should have covered the very basics of concurrent programming.

Maybe we have different definitions of "CS course"

sh4rks··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
Well this is news to me. Maybe things are different in the USA
sh4rks··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
> Frankly, most 35 y/o engineers don't truly appreciate the intricacies of intra-thread concurrent algorithms

You don't need to know the intricacies, just the foundational basics. Locks, blocking threads, deadlocks etc. Any half decent CS course will teach you these concepts.

sh4rks··on Are you ok?
It sucks that there's only a small window every year when you can enjoy the sun
sh4rks··on The rise and fall of Birchbox, the startup valued at nearly $500M has vanished
Was looking for a teacher through one of those aggregator websites. Found someone near my location, but the website needed my card details to get the teacher's contact info. Ended up googling their name and contacted them directly.
sh4rks··on Nearly 40% of software engineers will only work remotely
That's the entire point of this argument
sh4rks··on Georgia nuclear plant begins splitting atoms
How exactly is it a very minor impact if the globe goes 100% renewable? Significant reduction in air pollution + more stable energy prices.
sh4rks··on Life is a game, this is your strategy guide (2014)
I'd like to replace white male with white male-esque. This kind of thinking and behaviour isn't limited to a single race. It's a product of modern western society.
sh4rks··on Signal says it'll shut down in UK if Online Safety Bill approved
And everyone seems to carry that one
sh4rks··on Ask HN: Dealing with ADHD Without Medication?
What do you use to make the beep sound? Is your computer always on?
sh4rks··on World’s largest four-day work week trial finds few are going back
Yes. Most people are lazy. Make sure you get 8-9 hours of sleep, prep your meals for the day, and slowly increase the number of focused hours over time (progressive overload). "Burnout" is a myth if you focus on good recovery. (of course this doesn't apply to everyone, as some people may have certain medical conditions or other important commitments)
sh4rks··on U.S. food additives banned in Europe
An extra colon would have done the job

Expert: "Almost certainly making them sick"

sh4rks··on Why it’s so hard to catch your own typos (2014)
For code, I review my solution both in the IDE and on the review page (e.g. In github). The different layout and font helps me better spot errors/typos.
sh4rks··on An AI porn industry is emerging through Stable Diffusion
Exactly. As morbid as it is, people might eventually get bored of the fake stuff and might crave (or even fetishize) the "real" stuff.
sh4rks··on An AI porn industry is emerging through Stable Diffusion
Well if that sounds boring, you could ask the AI artist to add in some imperfections. Anything is possible.
sh4rks··on Amazon warns employees not to share confidential information with ChatGPT
Luckily the AI spews random nonsense when used as a search engine anyway.

But you could technically spam the AI with questions like "Why is X product the best for X task?" Then after a few months, users will start seeing that product when they ask for solutions to X task.

sh4rks··on MarioGPT Uses AI to Generate Endless Super Mario Levels for Free
A lot of roguelikes (e.g. Dcss) do this as well. I'd be interested to see a game with truly random procedurally generated levels, though the levels may end up being repetitive and mundane.
sh4rks··on Does Google need a new CEO?
Doesn't it get annoying to have to fact check everything that ChatGPT spews? It's very useful for code generation, but other than that, the frequency of hallucinations makes it a lot less useful.
sh4rks··on Declarative Shadow DOM
Shadow roots are a nightmare when doing any kind of Web scraping or UI integration testing
sh4rks··on ArxivGPT: Chrome extension that summarizes arxived research papers using ChatGPT
I tried asking ChatGPT the knuckle cracking question that GPT-3 got wrong (what happens if you crack your knuckles a lot).

The response was: The sound of cracking knuckles is actually a release of gas in the joint, but there is little scientific evidence to support the idea that it leads to arthritis or other joint problems. In fact, several studies have shown that there is no significant difference in the development of arthritis or other joint conditions between people who crack their knuckles and those who do not.

I wonder if OpenAI used that paper to fine tune ChatGPT

sh4rks··on Correlation between the use of swearwords and code quality in open source code? [pdf]
The Yandex data breach the other day revealed swear words and racist language in their source code. I'm not sure what that says about their code quality.
sh4rks··on No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health
> However, latest available data indicate that half of all alcohol-attributable cancers in the WHO European Region are caused by “light” and “moderate” alcohol consumption – less than 1.5 litres of wine or less than 3.5 litres of beer or less than 450 millilitres of spirits per week

Half a litre of beer a day is considered "light"?

sh4rks··on From Swiping to Sexting: The Gender Divide in American Dating and Relationships
So you'd rather drive a cheap, old, ugly car than an moderately priced decent looking car?
sh4rks··on From Swiping to Sexting: The Gender Divide in American Dating and Relationships
Exactly. Who cares where the data came from. Data is data.
sh4rks··on From Swiping to Sexting: The Gender Divide in American Dating and Relationships
Well say you're into fitness, you'd probably wanna date someone a bit more active. But I agree that the plus size woman could have a great personality.
sh4rks··on Reddit Confirms It Was Hacked–Recommends Users Set Up 2FA
Yet the time it takes to pick those locks hasn't changed for centuries
sh4rks··on ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web
A roomba + a smartphone controlled dishwasher and you're 50% of the way there
sh4rks··on LocalBitcoins will discontinue its service
Further down, I'm reading comments saying that they did shut down because of a lack of profitability. So which one is it?
sh4rks··on Ask HN: How do you find stuff on the internet now?
Blacklist Quora

I use DuckDuckGo with Firefox Android + ublock on my phone. DDG is great for simpler queries.

On my desktop, I use Google. My query usually ends with "reddit". If there's a subreddit for the topic I'm trying to find out about, I'll use Reddit's subreddit search feature (as horrendous as it is).

For work - Google. I sometimes use site:stackoverflow.com. Recently, I've also tried asking ChatGPT for simple code snippets.
