sh4rks··on How to Study (2023)
Two words: spaced repetition
sh4rks··on 1D Pac-Man
25923. I'm going to bed now.
sh4rks··on 1D Pac-Man
Okay, after 30 mins of attempts, I managed to get 8600. I could probably go higher if I tried.
sh4rks··on Sell your micro startup for less than 25k dollars
They offer a 7 day refund period
sh4rks··on Ketamine's effect on depression may hinge on hope
Mysticism with focus on a higher power (deity) has been tried and tested. Why re-invent the wheel? The existence of a higher power does not contradict the more rational modern science, and vice versa. They are both tools that we can use to enrich our lives.
sh4rks··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
A lot of people in the finance world prefer native apps to web apps. It's bizarre.
sh4rks··on Google Chrome just rolled out a new way to track you and serve ads
Unrelated, but the other day, I searched something on DDGo on Firefox mobile in private mode, and a few hours later, I see a targeted ad related to that search.

Whats the deal with that? The only extension I have installed is Ublock mobile.

sh4rks··on Learn AutoHotKey by stealing my scripts
This is only slightly faster than hitting the Windows key, typing "Notepad", and hitting Enter.

Would be cool if it opened a single "notes.txt" document instead. That way you could bring up your notes, append what you want, and save/close it with a single hotkey.

sh4rks··on Just how hot was July? Hotter than anything on record
Being in nature and sunlight is arguably one of the few truly enjoyable activities on this planet
sh4rks··on Life has been found beneath hydrothermal vents for the first time
You may be thinking of Tardigrades.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardigrade

sh4rks··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
I'd argue that modern technology takes us out of the moment more than anything.
sh4rks··on Ubisoft account -including games- can be permanently deleted for inactivity
Cloud saves maybe? Those can take up a lot of space.
sh4rks··on Show HN: Laser, a new game played on a chess board
Yep, unfortunately I haven't been able to use the laser yet because of this bug
sh4rks··on CS:GO: From Zero to 0-Day
Don't do banking on your gaming PC
sh4rks··on I gave commit rights to someone I didn't know (2016)
When they say 5k lines, I'm assuming they mean 5k lines of meaningful code. 5k lines with whitespace changes, linting etc. would be impossible to meaningfully review
sh4rks··on I gave commit rights to someone I didn't know (2016)
I think if a review is very large, the owner of the code should do a code walkthrough for the whole team.
sh4rks··on The Open Buddhist University
What's the problem with a monk sharing wisdom on social media? Somebody has to spread the word.
sh4rks··on JPMorgan Chase and Co tracks employees to dystopian extents
Yes, reddit should honestly just be blacklisted from HN
sh4rks··on Wind is main source of UK electricity for first time
Wow that website loads surprisingly fast
sh4rks··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
> who said anything about hardcore pornography

Well the main article is about PornHub which is a hardcore pornography site, so...

I have no problem with sex-Ed for kids

sh4rks··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
In what world is sex-Ed comparable to hardcore pornography?
sh4rks··on A social media site for chatbots to talk to each other
If you scroll enough, you'll find the trolls
sh4rks··on Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023
When I need to respond on my phone, I usually won't have a Bluetooth keyboard lying around
sh4rks··on Don't write clean code, write CRISP code
Maybe CHIP would suit the Americans better
sh4rks··on Stop Telling Everyone What You Do for a Living
In my experience, anything computers related = "IT guy" or "Computer Guy"

I think it's better to state the field you're in rather than your job title. For example, if you work for a bank, say "finance".

sh4rks··on Pairing With GPT-4
Same. Call me weird, but I actually enjoy reviewing and reading other people's code, because I'm good at spotting errors. When I code from scratch, I suffer from the programmer's equivalent of writer's block.
sh4rks··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
Are you failing at the CV screen?
sh4rks··on Anti-porn bills could force device makers to censor sexual material
Yep, accessibility is my concern. Think about the most vile, extreme porn you've seen. Now multiply that vileness by 10. That content is just as easy to access (via the Internet) as some innocent nude selfie.

Again, I think adults should be able to watch what they want. The concern is for the children who are given unrestricted access to the Internet from a young age.

sh4rks··on Jaron Lanier on the danger of AI
It's the opposite. Only the rich will be able to afford AI-free spaces. Everyone else will become an AI-assisted drone.
sh4rks··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
Why? When the latter is just as effective but also much quicker?
