sgtfrankieboy··on AT&T Wireless traffic shaping apparently making some websites unusable
>You've got to love a website that makes text selection invisible by default.

First time seeing it being invisible, mostly they just disable it. Terribly annoying practice. I often select text while reading articles.

sgtfrankieboy··on Hetzner Introduces ARM64 Cloud Servers
It might be, it's to filter out would be attackers. Normal users are just hit as well.
sgtfrankieboy··on Hetzner Introduces ARM64 Cloud Servers
It's literally just an alternative to Cloudflares attack protection.
sgtfrankieboy··on How does database sharding work?
It's also a real option with CockroachDB, unless you need regional sharding. Which a lot don't actually need anyways.
sgtfrankieboy··on Pausing Manifest V2 phase-out changes
Couldn't find any that were on the same level as the one I use with Edge.
sgtfrankieboy··on Pausing Manifest V2 phase-out changes
Switched to Firefox for like 6-12 months, eventually moved back to Edge a couple of weeks ago. Had to open it constantly anyways.

I couldn't get used to Firefox's DevTools and the JSON viewer in Firefox is bad compared to the JSON Formatter chrome extension.

sgtfrankieboy··on Norway takes a stance against Google Analytics
That's analytics...
sgtfrankieboy··on What in the Ethereum application ecosystem excites me
How do you deal with the physical object being sold without anyone caring about the NFT attached to it, and thus not transferring it?
sgtfrankieboy··on Ask HN: Are companies becoming increasingly pushy? If so why?
Meta just got a 265 million euro fine because their stuff was too open and people/companies scraped the data of 533 million users.

Best way to stop people from scraping (and getting fines) is to require an account.

sgtfrankieboy··on Moving Away from UUIDs (2018)
Which DB doesn't support UUID as a type so I can make sure to never use it?
sgtfrankieboy··on Tell HN: Cloudflare Is Blocking Piped
Because they save us ~20 thousand a month in bandwidth cost.
sgtfrankieboy··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
>Another decade of researching a cancer cure to cover another different type of cancer? $1400BN in funding these cancer treatments that don't work. Not even radiotherapy can fully cure cancer...

Thats how I read it, sorry. We made tremendous leaps in the past decade with improving automated driving, is it fully automatic? No. Does it mean we should somehow stop funding it? No.

sgtfrankieboy··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
Hyperloop is crap, just go with highspeed trains. They get the job done in city corridors.

But you can't have a train stop in front of your house... Nor can you build massive tubes everywhere in place of cheap roads.

Walking, Bikes, Busses, Metros, Trains, Cars, Planes. They all have a place in how we transport, right now the distribution between them is just out of whack.

sgtfrankieboy··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
So? Okay, we're not there yet with autonomous vehicles, and have spend tons of money on it. But the tech we have now didn't exist a decade ago. Give it another decade.
sgtfrankieboy··on Back to Android for the time being
>When people think of smartphones, iPhone is the default. Androids are unironically seen as peasants...

Never encountered this?

sgtfrankieboy··on RootMyTV is a user-friendly exploit for rooting/jailbreaking LG webOS smart TVs
Incorrect. I can watch 4K on my PC just fine using Edge or the Windows App, you also get 4K with Safari.

sgtfrankieboy··on I spent $3k on a Samsung Smart TV and all I got were ads and unwanted content
Ofc they are more expensive, can't subsidize them with ads.

You would add something like a soundbar and an apple TV, with a magic remote to control it all.

sgtfrankieboy··on I spent $3k on a Samsung Smart TV and all I got were ads and unwanted content
Because a 32" monitor is small for a TV? and a projector has tons of downsides?

The solution is to buy a commercial TV used in retail environments.

sgtfrankieboy··on Why we moved from AWS RDS to Postgres in Kubernetes
We have multiple CockroachDB clusters, have been for 4+ years now. From 2TB to 14TB in used size, the largest does about 3k/req sec.

We run them on dedicated hosts or on Hetzner cloud instances. We tested out RDS Postgres, but that would've literally tripled our cost for worse performance.

Only had a few hiccups with the big cluster but they were resolved quickly with their support.

We're very happy with the product, and have leaned quite a few optimization tricks to get the best out of it. Easy to use as well, join the nodes and it just works.

It's not perfect though, we've had quite a few issues with deleting lots of data at once, it doesn't like that. So we have to do deleted in smaller chunks.

sgtfrankieboy··on ZeroTier Business SSO
The issue is that SSO is often in the Enterprise tier.

The best solution would be to have G-Suite SSO in the lowest paid tier and SAML in Enterprise.

sgtfrankieboy··on Paginating Requests in APIs (2020)
Some database engines will support Cursors like this, but from what I can gather Cursor based navigation is a wrapper around KeySet or page navigation, but base64 encoded parameters.

Making the implementation details of pagination unimportant to the API layer the user uses.

sgtfrankieboy··on PranaDB – A distributed streaming database, designed to be horizontally scalable
Just had a read through the docs, Materialize is all in-memory. PranaDB persists it to disk.
sgtfrankieboy··on MCC (Master Chief Collection) Server Incident Summary
Halo Master Chief Collection was already released for 4 years (2014) when MSFT bought PlayFab (2018)
sgtfrankieboy··on Reasons Kubernetes is so complex
Probably need less cores for the same performance. Its never entirely clear what a "vCPU" is.
sgtfrankieboy··on We handle 80TB and 5M page views a month for under $400
I don't believe Argo is still needed? Tiered Caching is now a free feature.
sgtfrankieboy··on Debunking Cloudflare’s recent performance tests
>no apparent reason

A big reason is making sure the website behind it stays online. Having to deal with weekly/daily DDOS attacks yourself takes a lot of time.

sgtfrankieboy··on YouTube is about to pull its apps from Roku
Not OP. My guess is because YouTube offers user uploaded content, unlike all the other streaming services like Netflix, Disney+
sgtfrankieboy··on Firefox 93
That doesn't matter though, they will still download it either way.
sgtfrankieboy··on Self-driving Citroën Skate carries swappable pods for inner-city travel
Citroën has a electric car (the E-C4) available for 33k euro?
sgtfrankieboy··on EU plans to force OEMs to use a common charger for all phones
Besides, what's the point of a thinner phone when you got a huge bump for the camera's. Rather it be a bit thicker so that there is more room for battery.

I personally really wish for a flag ship phone like the Galaxy S21 Ultra that doesn't have such a huge camera array.
