sgt··on Show HN: The wanderer – cozy weekend game with no objective
It's better, but if you push it (e.g. sprint mode), you'll see some nasty GC pauses.
sgt··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
Btw, unrelated, but this is the kind of Vibe Coded AI slop design I see a lot these days. Every single thing on this page has a different color, formatting, and it's just painful to look at.
sgt··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
For day to day LLM experimentation (and even some business use cases), I'd say Apple Silicon would be first choice for me.
sgt··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
Paying around ~$0.25-0.3 per kWh here in South Africa. But you can also put up a lot of solar panels and lower that effectively.
sgt··on Show HN: The wanderer – cozy weekend game with no objective
I'd rather spend that weekend actually engineering the game properly and understanding the game loop, the game physics instead of vibe coding AI slop. The performance of the game is horrendous.

Amazing. I'll give it a shot on my 5090. I already tried using vLLM but it ran out of GPU memory. I guess it's likely Llama.cpp will work.
sgt··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Spike. Applied it has been.

I've heard that before though. I don't think you can compare economies like that since Russia has "near infinite potential" in natural resources, people, etc which Italy doesn't.

They can kick into a true war economy and then become significantly more of a threat. They haven't done so yet because the middle-class population likes their luxury lifestyle (for now).

I highly doubt Ukraine will "win" - in fact I believe Russia is ramping up to find an excuse at some point to attack a NATO country, but in a way and during a point in time it's difficult for NATO to retaliate.

sgt··on Mistral OCR 4.1
Are you saying Russia is winning over Europe in AI already? Dang, sanctions really don't work.
sgt··on Americans Love the Roar of a V-8 Engine–and They Don't Want to Give It Up
Because they are the logical dutch
sgt··on Flutter 3.47
Regarding Microsoft - that's a sad story indeed. The only reason they don't use Win32/GDI+ etc is because it's harder and you ideally want to do that in C++ to get the true powers available to you.

I've recently had to do some win32 stuff in a Flutter app and it's amazing what you can do, but it's pretty hard, even with an AI to help you.

So the "lazy" devs go to work using React Native and Electron rather for apps inside of Windows shipped by Microsoft. Crazy, but it's to meet deadlines.

sgt··on Flutter 3.47
For end user apps, I want them to look according to the OS, at least on Apple devices. That's what picky customers. For stuff where design does not matter much, such as enterprise apps that "put food on the table", as you say, I use Flutter and still get a very decent result.

But with sufficient time and effort, proper native iOS/macOS wins every time.

sgt··on Flutter 3.47
I don't think you'd want to in most cases, but adapting to different platforms takes energy and thought. For business CRUD apps you may just want to ignore that and get something out that works well.
sgt··on Flutter 3.47
I've been using Dart and Flutter for years, but I've never ever met anyone who's seriously using Dart for backend. That would be a very niche thing and not popular with teams.
sgt··on Flutter 3.47
Native was always the best. It was just time consuming, requiring a bigger team. Now with AI helping out, it's probably the best option by far. I still like Flutter a lot though because you can get stuff done fairly quickly and even apply Material design to the iOS apps or vice versa if you want to (if it's a business app where the design doesn't matter too much). Or if you e.g. target win32
sgt··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
I tried this using TestFlight but I get the distinct feeling that this is (1) vibe coded (and as a consequence, a fair bit of AI slop, you can even tell from the UI) (2) Slow and bloated from the get go - just look at the download size, nearly 170MB (3) Also the results are disappoint to say the least.

So maybe other people find more value in this, but it's off my TestFlight for now.

sgt··on 3D Interactive Map of the Silicon Valley
Seems heavily vibe coded. Really poor performance, inefficient drawing, buildings flickering.
sgt··on Mojo 1.0
Wow, so Lattner became a billionaire. Pays to be in compilers.
sgt··on Go is an ideal language for AI-assisted software engineering
Fair enough but people build simple API's with DB interactions in a variety of languages, Go, C#, Java, Zig, Rust, etc.
sgt··on Why Go Is an Ideal Language for AI-Assisted Software Engineering
So in terms of the mainstream languages, what would you say would be the most ideal language? (At least until Oct takes off!). Perhaps modern Java? .. Or even Zig?
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
But it won't take off (even within our niche communities) without some scriptability and images and videos.

I'll give this some thought. Maybe there is a way.

sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I don't think I've ever tried Discord. Is it like IRC? Or more like a forum
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Makes me think of good old Yggdrasil Linux.
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Good point on Amiga. It's truly a vibrant community, still. I follow Amiga Bill and Retro Hour etc.
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
So.. how do we design a Kagi, or a parallel Internet, that is immune to this? There's clearly a market.
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I bet the intelligence agencies are keeping track, though. The likes of CIA and Mossad, at the very least.
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
BBS's should definitely get a mention in the pre-web step
sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
> I would not describe it as Kagi being indirectly Russian.

What do you mean? That Kagi is directly Russian?

Paying a russian provider isn't against the law and at some point we need to bring Russia back into the warmth of the West.

sgt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
That reminds me - my wife had a friend who was killed by a shark (no joke). There were newspaper articles, but Google has completely forgotten about this and the newspapers are often behind a paywall, changed their URL's or simply the article vanished from those sites as well, which certainly doesn't help.

Funny, I was just thinking this morning that Google searches are absolutely horrible these days. It's like it has amnesia, a lot of recent history seems to be just gone. Especially on non US specific sites too.
