sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: What do you think of Lever's “50/50 men and women team” sales pitch
I like working with all sorts of different types of people, as I learn from perspectives different than my own in ways I wasn't expecting to learn, and I find that enjoyable.

I think some men reject the idea of women as competent, or more competent, as them, and tend unconsciously diminish female engineering talent, and you get meetings where the female engineer makes a proposal, and it's ignored, and then a second meeting where a male engineer makes that exact same proposal, and is lauded for the good idea.

I think if Lever is an attractive place for women, it means that the best women engineers and other employees will be more likely to be working there, rather then being devalued elsewhere. I think women that stay in tech and are successful have to be better at their job then men with equivalent roles.

That said, if I was concerned about the quality of their engineering talent, for whatever reason, I'd consider how best to judge them on that in a neutral and quantifiable sense when I interviewed there, rather then using demographics as any sort of signifier of talent.

sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Remote US employees = tax nightmare?
Actually where an employee lives and where they work may both be relevant, if different.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: What do when your company has bad health insurance options?
FSA is also tax advantaged, so you can pay out of pocket and invest for retirement or whatever, when you are more likely to have health costs.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: What to do while compiling?
I generally try to write comments and documentation while code compiles.
sfrailsdev··on MacBook Pro
It's at the OS level. http://www.economyofeffort.com/2014/08/11/beyond-ctrl-remap-...
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: I can't find a First job, now what?
You were a masters student, and an undergrad presumably in a field that may have lent itself to CS, so you had fellow students, and maybe even undergrads you taught or did research with. Are there local firms nearby with alumnus from your schools, that you might reach out to? All of that is a network of people who might help you. Have you been able to leverage that network to find opportunities?
sfrailsdev··on MacBook Pro
You can remap the capslock key to escape. Or do what I do, have capslock be ctrl when combined with a non modifier key, and escape otherwise. I enter normal mode with my pinky.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Which Go web framework should i use in 2016?
You don't need crazy frameworks in any language. However I think about the things different frameworks give me. Generation of database migrations and other standard elements, an ORM and/or query DSL so my SQL code can be more DRY, a community with a shared code base so that I don't have to rediscover every solution or rewrite everything for my particular use case, and additional domain knowledge that is transferable to other projects/companies so that I can be immediately productive.

I mean I like Go, and I understand that layer of abstraction can be frustrating, especially in a typed language, but that layer of abstraction can also be incredibly useful.

sfrailsdev··on Drug Agents Use Vast Phone Trove, Eclipsing N.S.A.’s (2013)
Hey don't forget super cheap labor in the form of prisoners
sfrailsdev··on CPP: A Standardized Alternative to AMP
PPC is pay per click, which is more likely to create confusion in a web dev context. PCP is less widely used in a software engineering and web developer context (one hopes anyway), but probably not something you want to be searching for from a work computer.

If we could get away from policies though, Performant Content Contracts doesn't overlap with much that is CS related.

sfrailsdev··on Electronic surveillance up 5x in DC area since 2011, almost all sealed cases
Actually went back and clicked a few ads myself. Good point.
sfrailsdev··on Vim for Humans
Because for a variety of things, vim allows you to work smarter, not harder.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Fired at 51 weeks by prominent startup?
I think what isn't being mentioned is that sometimes the company changes beneath your feet. Apps get sold and teams get aquihired, friends get let go or leave, roles get redefined; company priorities shift.
sfrailsdev··on Taking PHP Seriously
Probably because allocating a thread to every request is less efficient then a bunch of event loops with async. Ideally you do both, but a lot of languages choose to make concurrency something done at the process level and are event driven asynchronous web servers which are deployed as multiple processes, which adds a lot of overhead compared to threads. I think Golang has a nice balance with goroutines, as I understand things.
sfrailsdev··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
And you are on a hiring committee?
sfrailsdev··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
When I was starting out, Doing well in the Google interview process was a nice confidence booster.
sfrailsdev··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
From what I've heard, google intentionally screws with timing, who you will be speaking to, and other factors in order to try to understand how you deal with changes in circumstances.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Non-technical jobs for an average person without a college degree?
Skilled trades like plumber come to mind. There are millionaire plumbers. Car dealerships and real estate/ property management are also paths to success for many. Many jobs require some certification or education, but it's less than a college degree. http://profoundlydisconnected.com/
sfrailsdev··on Lost Diamonds: How our current system is failing underprivileged talent
We need to stop finding lost diamonds and start giving poor people in general more opportunities. People talk about rising tides lifting all boats, but ties flow in at the bottom and lifts things higher.
sfrailsdev··on Link between police shootings and voter registration
I think (and I'm not an expert on conservative thoughts on BLM, and to be clear, I don't believe this at all myself) it's that there is no racial disparity in police shootings, whites get killed just as often as blacks, Blacks are just more criminal (not of course, because they are black or systemic racism leading to less legitimate opportunities, but because of internal issues within black culture and community like unwed mothers), and that white liberals and outside agitators stoke the fires of racial hatred against whites rather then addressing the issues with black people in order to advance their own political agenda.
sfrailsdev··on Link between police shootings and voter registration
Maybe you are just trolling and trying to start a fight instead of starting a conversation, but on the off chance you aren't....

I'm proud to be an American. And in this country, our country, I have certain basic expectations for due process if I'm suspected or accused of a crime.

I am sure we have different perceptions of the men and women who have died. But perhaps you will agree with me, having a record, a warrant, or carrying an illegal weapon, even if that was the case in every one of these situations, which it is not, is not an executable offense in the United States.

Most of the protested deaths have been from traffic stops, not looting, but damaging property and stealing property doesn't seem like a good reason to shoot living breathing American people.

Law Enforcement captured the shooter in aurora, the shooter in that black church, terrorists both foreign and domestic, murders and serial killers, and they took them alive. Why should people die at traffic stops?

By your own numbers, African Americans are twice as likely to be shot and killed then their percentage in the population suggests. It doesn't matter why that is, even if we disagree on the cause, I think we can both say that the country can do better by it's citizens. It's fine to talk about the cause, but if you leave it at that, it's just an excuse.

As for Russia, I think you have a warped view. I am we are talking about a former communist dictatorship run with an iron fist. Unsanctioned protests, even by single individual persons, are met with heavy fines and jail time. Protests in Moscow are no longer allowed. Opposition politicians are arrested or assassinated. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2014/07/22... http://euromaidanpress.com/2016/01/05/new-normal-in-russia-p...

It sounds like you are getting a lot of your sense of what's going on from the news. That's a filter between you and the truth, pushing one agenda or another. People say that the Tea Party was funded by the Koch Brothers and outside interests too, and maybe some groups were, but funding doesn't create protests. I visited DC a few years ago when that movement was big in the news and talked with protesters there from the tea party, and got a sense of who they were. Americans who felt that things weren't fair for them. And I'd argue that, essentially, that's what BLM protesters are, just upset about different things.

Go out and listen to some BLM protestors, talk with them and more importantly listen to them, as fellow Americans, with an open mind and heart. Maybe you won't agree on everything, or anything, but talking to people with different views, open mindedness, honest debate about issues is why this is America, not Russia.

If people are looting they should be arrested and tried in our courts, not attacked with dogs. I'm taking that as hyperbole on your part.

sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: When do you know it's time to pivot?
So basically you have a market place but few or no customers to pay you, or your suppliers? Organic SEO is fine, if it's happening, but if it's not, you need to make it happen. If you have demand customers, reach out to a sample of them individually, and ask them what brought them there, and for any suggestions for you to consider that would make you easier for them to recommend to friends/colleagues.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Developer salary at nonprofit in Bay Area?
Non profits vary widely enough that you see places that can only take volunteer developer time and maybe provide some sort of tax benefit, maybe not, and places that pay something approaching market rate.

What's important is that you feel fairly compensated, and that you don't have to fight for that too hard, so that your income continues to grow.

sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Hiring at crummy wage – how to make it better?
I'd look at hiring remotely. But I would see if I could split initial elements up into smaller contract tasks and hire people piecemeal to get a sense of work product for remote employees, and make the best of them an offer.
sfrailsdev··on Show HN: Lemonade – the world's first P2P insurance company
If it's simply checking one credit agency, you could let the user enter in a credit score from whatever credit agency you use to get a quote, but let the quote be contingent on their credit score exactly matching that.
sfrailsdev··on Show HN: Lemonade – the world's first P2P insurance company
I'm off to found Ellis (ls), the company that displays current directory information, file creation information, and file ownership in an easy to use dashboard, but with websockets, Golang and React. Quick somebody give me a super new log structured merge tree db to use to store Ellis data.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: How do I build upon what HN did for OldGeekJobs.com?
Frankly, I'd make it part of a non profit group to advocate for age blind hiring. Get donations, pay yourself a reasonable salary, have the job board be part of it.
sfrailsdev··on String Theory’s Strange Second Life
I feel like we need Second Life's Strange String Theory to balance this headline out.
sfrailsdev··on Ask HN: Health insurance options for founders while bootstrapping
Even if you have prior health issues, they can't reject you from a private medical plan.
sfrailsdev··on Old Geek Jobs: fighting against ageism in the industry
Of course I'd point out that not every older developer has been a developer all along. A number of people move to software development as a second career, (or as a first career after a series of less career oriented jobs).
