sfk··on Introducing OpenBSD's new httpd [pdf]
Since you have such valuable insights, perhaps you should discuss them on openbsd-tech.
sfk··on Announcing Starfighter
So, apart from GitHub, we now have another opportunity for coding slaves to prove themselves worthy.

Spartacus, open your mouth, I want to see your teeth.

sfk··on The ups of downs of porting 50k lines of C++ to Go
The opposite of too regular is not necessarily "abuse of the C++ preprocessor" or unwarranted cleverness.

The same phenomenon exists in natural languages: The sentence structure in some passages of the bible is just too regular for me to be interesting, great authors on the other hand have an individual style while still writing with great clarity.

Go's style is simply too paratactic for me.

sfk··on The ups of downs of porting 50k lines of C++ to Go
I'm still trying to force myself to like Go. The basic problem is that Go is too regular for me, which makes it painful to read other people's code.

I don't have this problem with functional languages or C written in a free flowing coding style like djb's.

Is it even possible in Go to have an individual style?

How are errors in deferred functions handled? How about division by zero?

sfk··on Show HN: Discover your ranking on GitHub
No, I never thought that. I was extrapolating what might happen when an (almost) monopolist like GitHub would start to mine, analyze, and sell data like Facebook.
sfk··on Show HN: Discover your ranking on GitHub
A further step towards the gamification of Open Source development.

On the other hand, maybe that's Github's future business model: Rank Open Source slaves and sell that information to recruiters.

sfk··on “Equation Group” ran the most advanced hacking operation ever uncovered
Are you a sockpuppet trying to derail the discussion or is this serious?
sfk··on Stream of Foreign Wealth Flows to Elite New York Real Estate
Could you stop downvoting michaelochurch all the time? Several responses who agree with him are in the plus, this comment is <= -2. It's ridiculous.
sfk··on Go Koans
That is what the Go developers claim. I don't see this abuse very often in C, either.

If a speed sensitive function in C is documented to work for integers in the range 0 < x < 256, then it makes sense to put in an assert() as a courtesy to the users of the function.

It does not make sense in every situation to do a range check and return an error, or worse, "panic" (the latter didn't work for the Ariane 5).

sfk··on Open letter to German readers: What you were never told about Greece
This is utterly ridiculous. West Germany was FAR better off economically when the D-Mark was strong.
sfk··on Concise, opinionated history of the BSD/SystemV split
Fine, I assume he'll apologize for the treatment of Ben Noordhuis then.

EDIT: And the ministry of truth voting is on the side of some rich silicon valley guys again.

sfk··on Valve Economist Yanis Varoufakis Appointed Finance Minister of Greece
The corporations see the benefits, but the population does not. Same as in China.
sfk··on We are moving the Roslyn code to GitHub
The downvoters should educate themselves:

sfk··on We are moving the Roslyn code to GitHub
In a naive world it's called community. These days open source is a vehicle for multinationals to get suckers to write and test their software for free.

Microsoft has caught on to that, hence the move.

sfk··on Skinny Puppy demands royalties from US govt for using their music in Guantanamo
This is a silly discussion that distracts from the real issue (humans being tortured), but here you go:

https://www.justice.gov.uk/downloads/offenders/psipso/psi-20...

"2.1 Showing films on DVD or video to groups of prisoners or staff, either in communal areas or via in cell television systems, is considered to be a public performance for which a licence is required."

This is the UK version, be my guest to search for the U.S. equivalent before making any further claims.

sfk··on Skinny Puppy demands royalties from US govt for using their music in Guantanamo
No professional opinion is needed: The copyright warnings at the beginning of DVDs often state that it is forbidden to perform the work in "restaurants, prisons, ..." (sometimes they even mention oil rigs).

sfk··on Golang on GitHub
Interesting that the git hipsters are downvoting factually correct information. "Unruly hackers" (pg) seem to be perfect fodder for groupthink and monopolies.
sfk··on Golang on GitHub
Linux is on https://git.kernel.org/cgit/ .
sfk··on Golang on GitHub
I disagree. GitHub looks cluttered and the contrast is too low for speed reading. I prefer the hg interface, for example:

https://hg.python.org/cpython/

Another interface I prefer is:

http://cvsweb.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/

sfk··on Music publishers sue an ISP over piracy
The proper analogy is this:

There is a city where a road service provider (RSP) builds and maintains all roads. At strategic places, there are road checkpoints where the RSP can block traffic.

Recently, there has been a series of bank robberies. The city has strange laws: Bank robberies are illegal in he city, but hard to prosecute directly. The bank, knowing who participated in the robberies, asks the RSP to block the robbers' traffic.

The RSP refuses, bank sues the RSP.

sfk··on Mean People Fail
The price of really valuable goods (housing, education, health care) is steadily rising. Cheap trinkets in the form of silly websites, iPhones etc. are just a distraction from the fact that the majority of the population is worse off than 20 years ago.

sfk··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
Overloading productive open source devs with spam and administrative bullshit is parasitic. (Allegedly) collecting money after a project has told them to stop is parasitic at best.
sfk··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
Their ISP appears to be LINODE-US. But the other commenters are right that DMCA probably does not apply to trademarks.
sfk··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
DMCA being relevant or not, my understanding is that the takedown notice goes to the website's ISP (LINODE-US in this case).
sfk··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
If open source parasites like tip4commit don't learn, the next logical step is to trademark projects and send DMCA notices without wasting any further time.

Also, with this kind of sleazy behavior, the advertising clause in the BSD license suddenly becomes very appealing again.
