sfjailbird··on Revenge of the Junior Developer
LOL, pretty good, he had me going a few times. I'm sure a surprising amount of people will actually take this seriously, showing how ludicrous the situation is right now.
sfjailbird··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
Those damned dolphins were the icing on the cake.
sfjailbird··on Children under eight should avoid slushies as glycerol leads to hospitalisations
Same in the sense that their liver metabolism ends up depositing fat in the liver, leading to the same fatty liver disease. The actual metabolic pathways are different though.
sfjailbird··on Children under eight should avoid slushies as glycerol leads to hospitalisations
Be aware that glycerol has as many calories as regular sugar. It does have a lower glycemic index, though.
sfjailbird··on Children under eight should avoid slushies as glycerol leads to hospitalisations
Yes, fructose is uniquely bad, as it must be metabolized in the liver, where it can contribute to fatty liver disease.

But regular sugar contains fructose in almost the same proportion as high-fructose corn syrup, so it's not a much better or worse alternative.

Edited to add: Fructose also has ten times higher glycation activity than glucose, which is the process by which sugar binds to (and destroys) proteins and lipids in the body.

> looking for brands that ... advertise they’re free of artificial sweeteners is probably the right move

Glycerol is not considered an artificial sweetener, or labeled as such.

sfjailbird··on Firefly ‘Blue Ghost’ lunar lander touches down on the moon
Here are the pictures it has taken so far:

There's also a cool lunar flyover video taken during final deorbit.

sfjailbird··on The man who spent forty-two years at the Beverly Hills Hotel pool (1993)
Try eating as much fat as you can, without any carbs to go with it. It's not going to be much.
sfjailbird··on Phind 2: AI search with visual answers and multi-step reasoning
LOL. I don't much care for OpenAI, but ChatGPT as a product is very well done.
sfjailbird··on The year I didn't survive
Those don't sound like unreasonable concerns at all. Wish you the best.

There's something I wanted to say reading this whole thread. I just hope it does not come off as lecturing or preaching. It's this: Don't feel bad about things that there is no way for you to change. Just do your very best about the things you can. Nobody can ask more of anyone.

sfjailbird··on Ask HN: Promoted, but Career Path Derailed
Definitely tell the new director what you want, and firmly, without threatening to quit over it - leave that unsaid. If you are really valued, s/he will try to accomodate you. If not, then you know where you stand and then it's time to put up or shut up.

I have never found any value in merely airing my feeling. Just say what you want, that is much easier for a boss to deal with.

sfjailbird··on Don't make fun of renowned author Dan Brown (2013)
Yeah that is quite the accomplishment. A few hundred? Most audio books are like six to ten hours of continuous audio!
sfjailbird··on Mastercard DNS error went unnoticed for years
Without saying too much, I can tell you that this is no obscure subdomain. That traffic he showed represents the gateways for almost all web traffic into Mastercard solutions that run on Azure.

Also, if you knew the culture in there, you would appreciate the extreme irony of them making a mistake like this.

sfjailbird··on What if no one misses TikTok?
No one would miss NYT either, just another newspaper. First they came for TikTok...
sfjailbird··on EFF statement on U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold TikTok ban
The counter to incorrect information is facts - not trying to hide it.

What's next? Should we prevent giving air time to people from 'adversarial' countries at all? Or only allow it when accompanied by a sanctioned commentary to 'correct' any unwanted information?

While we're at it, how about 'adversarial' parties within our own country? Why should they be allowed to mislead gullible people?

sfjailbird··on Blue Origin reaches orbit on first flight of its titanic New Glenn rocket
Worst part of any SpaceX live stream.
sfjailbird··on They have not been trained for this
Those downvotes. The amount of bile on HN against crypto is a mark of shame on this community.
sfjailbird··on Tracking Down the Bulgarian Marketplace Scams
This is common. I've done it myself and had no problems. I want to buy some bulky item from another part of the country, I trust the seller, so I just wire them the money and tell them when my movers are going to show up.
sfjailbird··on My Colleague Julius
This sounds made up and actually written by an AI. "I now have an artificial intelligence software that helps me code", can't see anyone working in the field writing like that.
sfjailbird··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
Sounds like your cousin is able to think for himself. The amount of bullshit I hear from quality-college educated individuals, who simply repeat outdated knowledge that is in their college curriculum, is no less disappointing.
sfjailbird··on Windshield pitting incidents in Washington reach fever pitch on April 15, 1954 (2003)
The consumption of which itself is driven by an unscientific scare about animal fat.
sfjailbird··on After 3 Years, I Failed. Here's All My Startup's Code
There's gotta be a name for this fallacy. "This enterprise software sucks and is extremely expensive, so we will build something that is actually good and become billionaires!"

This is the graveyard of engineer driven startups in the enterprise space, who make the mistake of thinking that software quality matters. The fact is it is not a top priority, if it is even a priority at all.

In the enterprise space, if you're not a Fortune 500 company, all that matters is 'relationships', by which I mean sleazy sales processes (or actual nepotistic friends-and-family relationships).

Joel Spolsky wrote a great essay once about why there is no software priced between $1000 and $100,000. Because above $1000 you need a sales team that takes purchasing managers to strip clubs and play golf with CEOs, and that shit adds up. On the plus side, your software can be dogshit, like the stuff you work with every day.

sfjailbird··on Veo 2: Our video generation model
The prompt asks that it flaps its wings. So it's actually really impressive how closely it adheres (including the rest of the little details in the prompt, like the scarf). Definitely the best of the three, in my opinion.
sfjailbird··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
I think it's the "some kind of evidence" that's the important part.
sfjailbird··on South Korean president declares emergency martial law
Probably not, given the lack of actual evidence of this.
sfjailbird··on London's 850-year-old food markets to close
Doh, it's by Jim Crace, should have mentioned that.
sfjailbird··on London's 850-year-old food markets to close
If anyone is looking for a good read, there's a great book called Arcadia, which revolves around this trend of traditional city food markets being supplanted by upscale hipster traps.
sfjailbird··on Show HN: Voice-Pro – AI Voice Cloning Magic: Transform Any Voice in 15 Seconds
First generative AI destroyed Google search, and now it has pretty much destroyed YouTube. Social platforms, including this one, are probably goners too. We live in interesting times.
sfjailbird··on Standing desk might be as bad as sitting all day
... for cardiovascular disease.

The benefits of standing, is for neck and back posture, I think most people agree.

Standing all day sucks, it's no secret, anyone who works retail will tell you that.

sfjailbird··on Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now
Sounds like a potential compliance issue too, if you work with sensitive data.
