sf_rob··on Apple announces Apple Card credit card
From their website: Variable APRs range from 13.24% to 24.24% based on creditworthiness. Rates as of March 2019
sf_rob··on U.S. Treasury Yield Curve Inverts for First Time Since 2007
>Statistically that should be the case 50% of the time.

Only if the risk premium is the same.

>Treasure bonds are liquid, so buying a 5 year one does not mean that you have to hold it to maturity.

Here you claim that the risk premium is the same because it's liquid. However the term is not the same so you'll be hit with a bigger effect when short term interest rates change on a longer time horizon instrument.

sf_rob··on Google may rank sites for queries that don't appear on the page at all
I just put quotes in half my queries these days.

A hilarious example of this last week; searching 'email CTR' brought up pages with email/center... Google of all companies should care about CTR!

sf_rob··on Sprayprinter – A graffiti robot startup
This one is so much cooler. Linear controlling is the obvious solution, but this does the proper approach angles which is awesome.
sf_rob··on Nova, new concept of browser that turns websites into apps
Why do I have to have an account to use this? That's enough for me to not want to use it.
sf_rob··on Kickstarter’s staff is unionizing
Has being in the news as an organizer significantly harmed your job search?
sf_rob··on Where Warren’s Wrong
>isn't one of consumer choice but rather of taking advantage of network effects to enable rent seeking behaviour.

If Apple could rely on network effect alone then they could have a hidden setting to enable 3rd party apps to run on the device like Android does. The retort to this is that you're increasing the attack surface of rogue apps but I don't buy that personally.

sf_rob··on Tesla to raise prices and keep more stores open
Yep, going to a showroom convinced me that a Volt was a good decision. I think they're both great cars, but I actually prefer Android Auto and the fit and finish of the Volt. That said I'd probably buy a Model 3 today since the part supply chain of the Volt will probably be drying up in the next decade (it's been discontinued).
sf_rob··on The Stigma of Choosing Trade School over College
Honestly my biggest shock coming out of college was 1) how unfamiliar I was with the toolset/processes in real world development and 2) how little onboarding on these topics I received from a major tech co. It probably didn't help that I was in a technical role tangential to "real" SWEs but honestly I think attending a bootcamp to round out my skills would have been a great idea.
sf_rob··on Whole Foods cuts workers' hours after Amazon introduces minimum wage
EITC is very roughly this.
sf_rob··on Mark Zuckerberg Promised a Clear History Tool Almost a Year Ago
I'd be nervous that Google would consider this click fraud even if you aren't the publisher and would limit some account features.
sf_rob··on Apple Is Removing 'Do Not Track' from Safari
IMO 2) is a PR move. Removing 1 bit of data isn't going to do much for anti-fingerprinting.
sf_rob··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
Agreed, I've mostly quit Facebook, which was never that enthralling to me, but Reddit / Twitter / Podcasts / Hackernews are all much more interesting. None of them are adding significant value to my life other than that dopamine hit, but I still haven't left them.
sf_rob··on Small World: The Tiny House Trend
Seems that the overlap of tiny homes and lite homesteading is large, whether that be for pragmatic or romantic reasons.
sf_rob··on New study: Google manipulates users into constant tracking
They appear to have fixed this in the past year. I had the same issue.
sf_rob··on New study: Google manipulates users into constant tracking
The thing that drives me nuts is (at least last time I set them up) Google Home and Android Auto both require Location and Web Activity permissions at an account level. I don't understand why Google just can't offer a subset of functionality on these devices rather than forcing you to have enable these permissions.
sf_rob··on Table-Saw Kickback on Camera (2012) [video]
I can't imagine how cutting a cube would not involve a crosscut as the final cut e.g. perpendicular operation of the material. This type of cut would ideally be done with a sled not a fence, so unless I'm really misunderstanding it was probably a major error in technique selection that caused this incident.
sf_rob··on Table-Saw Kickback on Camera (2012) [video]
For the unfamiliar in this thread. The SawStop on it's own will not prevent kickback as seen in this video. That said there are other types of anti-kick guards available.
sf_rob··on Table-Saw Kickback on Camera (2012) [video]
Also, Sawstop has a bypass if you have to use it on something mildly conductive.
sf_rob··on Time Running Out for Beloved Mechanical Horse-Race Game in Vegas
I was once at the poker tables nearby and a group came in at 1:00 in the morning dressed head to toe in derby viewing apparel. They proceeded to play the mechanical horses and it was absolutely hilarious.
sf_rob··on Why are glasses so expensive? The eyewear industry prefers to keep that blurry
I'd pay a fee to "borrow" the empty frames of 3-5 selections from Zenni and then return them prior to ordering. I've had mixed success on fitment from Zenni.
sf_rob··on New logo
Wow, the hovering rapid image preview are really annoying.
sf_rob··on Meat-free 'Impossible Burger 2.0' tastes even closer to the real deal
Soylent has proper release notes: https://soylent.com/pages/release-notes
sf_rob··on Interesting Tech Markets for 2019
I would think that most people buy gold as a safe-haven investment, so in this case its floor and/or non-correlation would be very important.
sf_rob··on We can confirm that there was a successful 51% attack on Ethereum Classic
Upvoted for explaining the attack well but RE:longest chain, Blocks are added at a standard rate so the chain with the greatest accrued work is the "truth".
sf_rob··on The Yoda of Silicon Valley
My favorite one of these was from a coworker having trouble getting his presentation up. "People outside the tech industry ask 'Will a computer take my job?'; people inside the tech industry ask 'why won't this damn projector work?'"
sf_rob··on Sedans Aren’t Dead, American Sedans Are
A pillar yes, C pillar is bad but doesn't bother me because the reverse camera is fantastic (for a mid priced sedan). My only complaint is that there aren't turn signal cameras for lane changes.
sf_rob··on Sedans Aren’t Dead, American Sedans Are
I love my Volt, even having had a Model 3 reservation and done a test drive. I'm not saying it's a better car in any objective sense, but its compromises are areas I'm fine with. Honestly, I can't believe the Volt wasn't more popular. It's probably being due to not educating consumers enough about it, being strange looking, and being a GM.
sf_rob··on Amazon admits it exposed customer email addresses, but refuses to give details
This is incredibly creepy. A few months ago I realized this and was able to find some friend's profiles and see their reviews. I hate implicit sharing/suggested friends/etc in services especially non-social services. For instance, my friend is following me on a tech shopping site I use... something I have 0 interest in. I've started attaching pseudo anonymous sites to a backup email address for this reason. If I want to friend someone I'll find them.
sf_rob··on AT&T to cut off some customers' service in piracy crackdown
As you hint at, this is also a space where the FCC considers dial up and cell phone service (AFAIK) to be competitors when it comes to regulatory requirements. I got some copyright notices from a roommate's habits and Comcast was the only high speed ISP that was available at my house. Given that my work involves regular working from home, this was highly concerning.
