seydor··on Anthropic researcher says more than 10% chance AI "could kill all humans"
Humans do tend to consume a very large part of the resources of the planet. Surely a superior being would be doing some pest control in its planet, just like we exterminate roaches
seydor··on Anthropic researcher says more than 10% chance AI "could kill all humans"
Including them?
seydor··on An Alien Mind
> the target function frontier labs are trying to approximate is ultimately a super intelligence

So an unknown function that is even unintelligible to humans? that sounds a nonstarter

seydor··on An Alien Mind
> Neural nets create models and deep layers of abstraction around

We don't have any proof of that, but the approximator thing is proven. The rest is just marketing speak.

Synthetic data derive from other linguistic data. Whatever intelligence is in there, it is expanded horizontally, not vertically

seydor··on An Alien Mind
What is the rationale for superhuman intelligence? Neural networks are approximators being fed human intellect. Therefore they can only approximate the intelligence of humans. Even if the llm speaks an alien language, it should be similar to human intellect. Moving to the vertical axis would require some different mechanism.

seydor··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
China has cheaper energy, why wouldn't companies go there to produce even cheaper?

US is expensive compared to what?

seydor··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
But is it the most profitable
seydor··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
pretty much the closest thing to the case where a human form is required.
seydor··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
These machine assembling robots would be more expensive than the humans in those countries. And there is no shortage of humans willing to do that job.

There is , however, real shortage of humans for agri and construction , in the rich world, right now.

> You want some automatistaion for painting a wall

You call over someone with a spraying machine that paints the house in 30 minutes.

seydor··on The race to engineer new knobs for the human brain
chemo/optogenetics have been used for decades to erase memories, change valence of memories, generate memories .... usually fear memories .. in mice.
seydor··on Why humanoid robots won't catch up to human workers any time soon
I dont get the investment in humanoids beyond trying to create some kind of stock market bubble again. Factories that have already heavily robotized their production, employ a minimal amount of humans to do niche work. It's going to be immensely difficult to replace that niche work with any kind of robot, let alone humanoids.

These humanoid robots (or generally limbed robots) could be useful for the two sectors that are craving for cheap workers, worldwide: agriculture and construction. Yet all the demos i see are fragile lightweight robots not made for rugged work. That makes me conclude that the whole sector is currently like the Metaverse.

seydor··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
In a previous generation, people would detect those technological snake oil sellers , call them out , even chase them. Because they could tell scammers from non-scammers.

Now we have already 2-3 generations raised to consider scam practices to be the norm , and even to celebrate behavioral tricks and audience maximizing optimization at any cost (clickbait!).

I cannot be convinced this is a normal thing. Over time, things revert to normal, but often in an explosive way.

seydor··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
Are you sure about it?

In fact,eu commission and parliament are Meta's biggest political spenders in most EU countries.

Personally i find this type of knee-jerk reaction to any discussion about the EU suspicious

seydor··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
Cookie banners are already obsolete in the age of AI. Who is wasting time defending it? People don't even care to hate GDPR these days, it's an anacrhonistic regulation from a different era that some EUrocrats like to boast about

seydor··on The turbulent AI era is here
- If AI and robots are as good as Bill suggests , one can infer that AI will signal the end of cities, at least the end of megacities. If the home robot can clean and cook and also do my taxes, hair, and diagnose my health , one is more likely to escape unemployment by moving to a small town where he can find land and resources, and use robots to exploit them, just like humans have always done when economy was based in agriculture. If there is no longer a reason for people to live close together, decentralization is the most likely outcome.

- The biggest geopolitical impact will probably come from AI weapons. Just like previous shifts in weaponry caused the fall of empires , the rise of naval empires and the rise of national modern superpowers, AI may lead to the end of the UN and beginning of something new.

- Societies will change but a plan is not needed and it's most likely useless. Societies adapt , and nobody has ever been able to predict how. Let's not make the same mistake again.

seydor··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
when there is location arbitrage, then someone is benefiting at the expense of someone else. Practically, expats add to the pensioner population of the country (except for the burden of paying their pensions). European countries are designed to require large working populations to sustain public services (which older people will disproportionaly use more). Add to that the unintended consequences such as high real estate prices. Therefore i believe that overall, it harmful.

Another data point: Self-employed people in Greece are now taxed based on a "mandatory income" , which is meant to reduce tax evasion but also force small businesses to consolidate or shut down (guess which one happened). About 4000 people have objected this unfair taxation and requested being reaudited. 90% of them ended up being taxed even more, because tax laws are overly burdensome , complex and erratically applied. It's also not because of lack of oversight by tax authorities. In fact greece has the most complex digital oversight rules and digital bureaucracy , to the point that it is now ranked the world's worst country to do business: https://www.tmf-group.com/en/news-insights/articles/global-b...
