Not really.

We have the OpenBB Platform CLI, a command line interface (CLI) that allows users to access a lot of financial data but needs to bring each API key.

The reason why this works is that once you run the CLI, you are running it on your machine and leveraging your own API keys - which, when you subscribe you sign for Terms and Conditions.

And, in it, it usually states that you cannot use the data for any commercial purpose.

This is what most data vendors do. Not only because they are trying to upsell you but because giving you access to data costs them money.

So, most of the APIs that you find that are free and have the rights to distribute that data are usually from governments (e.g. FRED or Companies House https://developer.company-information.service.gov.uk/get-sta...)

Of course.

We have a paid enterprise product: OpenBB Terminal Pro (https://openbb.co/products/pro).

In it, users have access to several datasets that we have redistribution rights for. This enables users to export any dataset but also to access that same financial data through our Excel Add-in.

Most retail financial products only have display rights as it's much cheaper than the redistribution license.

You can also check OpenBB, one of the most known projects in this category: https://github.com/OpenBB-finance/OpenBBTerminal

Most data vendors will require a free API key because that's their GTM. They want you to create an account with them to get a free API key and then expect to be able to upsell you over time.

Or you can access "free data" (e.g. yfinance) that relies on projects who actively scrape financial data from a website - these tend to need a lot of updates from main maintainer since there are no aligned incentives between maintainer of the scrapped API and company that has the data.

PS: I'm the main creator behind the OpenBB project on GitHub.

Easily create HTML webviewers in python utilizing the wry library. Unlike many HTML viewers that exist for Python - Pywry allows you to run javacsript.

PyWry is also a ~2mb footprint for Mac and Windows - Linux will require a few more libraries which are listed below.

There's almost 100 in total

Some of them can be found here: https://docs.openbb.co/terminal/quickstart/api-keys

sexy_year··on Show HN: OpenBB Terminal – Investment research for everyone
All data sources on the terminal allow you to use them for free. The only thing needed is you signing up on their page to get an API key.

https://docs.openbb.co/terminal/quickstart/api-keys

After that your API key will allow you limited usage, e.g. AlphaVantage allows 5 requests per minute. This means that if you want more access you'll have to subscribe to one of their premium tiers.

From 92 different data sources.

It's not our data, it's their data. We just provide it under OpenBB terminal and API, in 1 place. So you don't need to read 10 different data sources documentations and it's all standardized by us

Best comment I've read so far. Agree.

Appreciate this more than you know.

What we did was wrong, everyone knows it. We came out and apologized. We discussed this for days after it happened internally and with our investors/advisors. But there's nothing else we can do.

True

We need to do a better job at educating what data is accessible through platform.

You can find the core here: https://openbb.co/products/terminal#features

In any case, you are right. We rely on API keys because unlike BBT we don't own the data, and therefore, we are essentially a platform that aggregates investment research data - and that the user is allowed to customize their own feeds.

sexy_year··on Show HN: OpenBB Terminal – Investment research for everyone
Real-time data is overrated. A big majority of BBT users don't rely on it at all. Not speculation, just actually talking with users ...

FWIW, Databento has just announced a partnership with OpenBB (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/databento_openbb-investment-r...) and they provide real-time data

sexy_year··on Show HN: OpenBB Terminal – Investment research for everyone
You are clearly missing the point of an open source investment research platform.

OpenBB doesn't own any data. But by providing an open source infrastructure, any data can be hooked up into a single platform.

So your argument about BBG isn't valid, because with what we are building there's no reason why OpenBB couldn't integrate with BBG data feeds (if they were open to it).

Regardless, I agree that the Bbg comparison is more for marketing. Our approach is substantially different for a different market.

I don't get this.

We literally came out and apologize.

https://github.com/OpenBB-finance/OpenBBTerminal/issues/1625 - this provides my initial train of thought. But the "Welcome to our newsletter" was never the email intended to be sent.

In any case, it was a shitty idea regardless. We apologized for it, but there's nothing we can do now to make up for it.

sexy_year··on Show HN: OpenBB Terminal – Investment research for everyone
We did.

But that was after I received a SPAM email saying "Welcome to our newsletter" in my personal GitHub account when I wasn't part of that audience.

You can see my interaction with someone from our team here: https://github.com/OpenBB-finance/OpenBBTerminal/issues/1625... - When we realize what had just happened.

We immediately deleted that audience (which was our plan all along anyway), but then it was too late, we were trending on HackerNews and Mailchimp pinged us after. After that it was mostly damage control, as there's nothing we could have done to make things better.

Hey,

I come from OpenBB.

The OpenBB Terminal is fully python based so that we can have the community working on the platform without needing to rely on other languages or frameworks. Having that said, we are currently working on a better frontend for less tech-savvy users.

From your demo, it seems that it's not all integrated into your platform, so you are just opening a new tab to the corresponding data source. On our platform you get access to a very substantial amount of data, and we make it all integrated so that you can benefit from learning our infrastructure.

You may argue that you get access to the data faster than OpenBB. But you are comparing opening a new window and url to processing data from a source and displaying into the same platform where the rest of the interface lies. A bit unfair.

In addition, we double down on automation. So, the OpenBB Terminal actually allows you to automate your full investment research routine - which I think is something you can't do in any other platform, easily.

In any case, good luck with the project!

I understand this now.

And believe me, if we had known how people would have reacted - even with the one single e-mail about us changing completely the name of org and repo - we would have not done it.

It's midnight here and am still apologising to everyone for this. It's frustrating, but it's the only thing we can do now.

Hi all,

I'm the Didier Lopes from the e-mail.

Sorry for this. This was not intentional The goal was to let all you know about the rebrand of the project, ONLY.

We would have removed every single one of you from the newsletter.

sexy_year··on Show HN: Gamestonk Terminal – Can't Stop, Won't Stop
Hey all,

Does any of you know what Docker, Jupyter Lab integration, features website and new features have in common? Well this is what has been happening in Gamestonk Terminal World since last month, and MORE!

Docker: - This has been a highly requested feature from our more experienced dev users, as it allows you to run our code in a container, pull the image and then get going with a smooth installation process. You will also be able to run Jupyer Lab from our Docker container.

Jupyter Lab Integration: - Jupyter is on course to take over the world - Big investment banks like JP Morgan use Jupyter too - Professionals in the industry such as Data Scientists, Data Analysts and Machine Learning engineers are familiar with the combo dockers+notebooks. Therefore, it makes our terminal an attractive Open-Source project to devote time to. - Academia students and universities will be able to use terminal data through a notebook for their projects and coursework. We’re on track to be able to achieve something on this soon!

Hugo Website: - This will not only simplify a contributor’s documentation process, but it will also let non-Gamestonkers now see the vast number of features we offer and yes, when you read “offer” this is actually an offer since the tool is completely free to use.

Main New features: - New Dark Pool Shorts menu - Refactored and improved Crypto menu!!! - Dark Pool and Crypto report generation - Excel Discounted Cash Flow created by a MBA student - Big code refactoring to allow for contributors to easily get started with our codebase - Contributing document

Tier 2 features: - Sentiment Investor data features implemented by the SI team themselves - Feature/fraud indicators implemented by a MBA student - Multiple plotting for economy data for more insight extraction - Screener presets to not miss out on promising tickers - Several new Technical Analysis indicators, e.g. Fibonacci, Fisher transform, Centre of gravity, zlma, Donchian channels… - Unusual options activity - Hot penny stocks in discovery menu - A contributor implementation of a realtime earnings expected move, from The Geek of Wallstreet - Several new YahooFinance commands to discover promising tickers - Refactor Exploratory Data Analysis and Residual Analysis menus into a Quantitative Analysis one

As if this wasn’t enough, we’re also working towards a Discord bot so you can make best use of our terminal when discussing trading strategies with your friends. This was an initiative from a contributor, which just goes to show how much we rely on our community to drive our project.

If you appreciate what we’re doing and want a better free and Open-Source financial tool, you should definitely star the project on our github here, join our Discord channel, and follow our twitter account. Not necessarily in that order! :)

Have you been following our project and want to join our growing community? Here are a few tips on how to get started: - Join our Discord and tell us about your experience so far - Let us know what else you would like to see in the terminal - You can help to improve our crypto terminal, which is 99% taken care of from our contributors! - Help us add any features! You don’t know python? This may be your cue to learn with our team!

Much love! GST Team

Yes, I spent a big amount of time investing on having the documentation in the code structure in the READMEs. We're still in the process of passing this information to the website

And check the folders within, the README will show what you get out of each command

I agree with random3455699 on this one.

This has happened again and again throughout history. Where a movement caused a system change. For instance, Carnation Revolution which led to Portugal being a democratic country.

And this is already happening on the stock market, where the system is being re-considered due to the nature of shorting. As Elon Musk put it "u can't sell houses u don't own u can't sell cars u don't own but u can sell stock u don't own!?"

If retail traders start buying a stock just due to it being low float and heavily shorted, the system will have to adapt... There's not much a Hedge Fund can do, when you talk about millions of retards buying shares because "they like the stock".

sexy_year··on Gamestonk Terminal – Stock and crypto market terminal
I think most of the people underestimate the Reddit crowd.

If you scroll through the reddit posts, 9 out of 10 are shit posts. But that other one is actually really good DD, by retail traders with 9-5 jobs that go a long way to understand what's going on under the hood. Not conspiracy theories, but actually backing up by data.

There's a reason why HF are closing down due to shorting GME (https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/london-based-hedge-fund-tha...).

However, I agree with you guys that if we want to become more "legitimate" we need to consider a change in the name. Although our intention remains the same, to combine our efforts and leverage data to the average retail trader that can't afford a Bloomberg terminal, or even a paid subscription to another SW.

Anaconda is more because it makes it easier to install python. A lot of our users have never coded before, and we found that installing python through Anaconda seemed the best option.
sexy_year··on Gamestonk Terminal – Stock and crypto market terminal
True. What most users do is that they work with the terminal as it comes, and as soon as they start needing an API key they go and get it. E.g. I don't trade forex, for me it doesn't make sense to set an Oanda account to get access to this information.

It's hard to improve in this space because we want to keep the terminal free. And exploiting each of the free tiers of these APIs makes that possible at the moment.

Our GamestonkTerminal/GamestonkTerminal2 has a Proof of concept GUI, where it works with a one click start. Although API keys still need to be provided.

sexy_year··on Gamestonk Terminal – Stock and crypto market terminal
Currently the terminal requests API keys that only give access to free tier features. This is so that we can say that every user has access to the exact same features, regardless of whether they have a subscription to a specific API.

This is likely going to continue for a while. However, at some point, we may want to add premium features associated with these APIs. Because if the user is paying such subscription, it makes sense to provide that data on the terminal. Since this will only benefit a small subset of our users, we are deeming this as low priority

sexy_year··on Gamestonk Terminal – Stock and crypto market terminal
I agree with you. The reason why we still link it to Bloomberg is because of the vision we have, not the current state of the project. Kind of similar to a self-driving startup mentioning that they will become a Tesla - It's not true, but you get the idea and concept.

I made the repo open-source first at the end of February, given that we are only 3 devs (2 adding features and 1 dev ops) all with full-time jobs, there's only so much we can get our hands on.

I don't have access to Bloomberg Terminal. But I'm pretty confident that there are features that we've got that Bloomberg doesn't. E.g. we have a screener for stocks that can be specified by our user base and made available by everyone (https://github.com/GamestonkTerminal/GamestonkTerminal/tree/...). This is what having an open-source project can bring, combining collective knowledge of the community.

sexy_year··on Gamestonk Terminal – Stock and crypto market terminal
Couldn't agree more with this. I've learned so much these past couple of months. But having a more sustainable project with at least 1 full-time dev, would be very welcomy
