setpatchaddress··on The Amish have negotiated a pact with modernity (2018)
https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/buddhist-monks-with-the...

It's more complicated than that. Always.

The monks I've known accept modern science, medicine, etc cheerfully. It's not really relevant to Buddhist spirituality any more than the advent of frozen fish sticks was.

It's fine to LARP 1850 if that's your bag. But people who truly wish to live in the confines of that era will have children who die of cholera. We should all be grateful for the upsides of modern society.

setpatchaddress··on Decades after polio, Martha is among the last to still rely on an iron lung
Ah, that explains your attitude here. Do tell us more about NPR's liberal bias.
setpatchaddress··on Exa: An alternative to Ls
Yes, they really need to call out what makes it different. The front page makes it sound mostly like an alias to ls with specific options + an additional call to `git status`.
setpatchaddress··on 50 years ago, The Electric Company used comedy to boost kids' reading skills
Sure, but is it worse than what they'd have otherwise been watching on TV?

Stipulated that in an ideal world, children should watch no television.

But if the alternative is, I don't know, reruns of Leave it to Beaver?

setpatchaddress··on Despite having just 5.8% sales, over 38% of bug reports come from Linux
I don’t disagree with your sentiment, but that wasn’t meant as a literal “I am the god Pan” — it was figurative, hyperbole. At least, that’s my recollection from when I read it a couple of decades ago.
setpatchaddress··on Google has a secret deal with FB called “Jedi Blue” that they knew was illegal
Specifically, activist GOP states; some of the most corrupt politicians on the planet. I’m sure there’s actionable antitrust against Google, but this particular lawsuit is probably hot air.
setpatchaddress··on Trader Joe Wrote a Memoir
I’d love to also read about the post-“Joe” 1979-present period — how Aldi’s has done so well with it without compromising the original principles.
setpatchaddress··on Western Maryland asks West Virginia to 'consider adding us' to their state
I could see Congress going along with this in exchange for DC statehood.

But, while we're talking about things that won't ever happen, we should also combine the Dakotas into one state. Lot of government administrative resources wasted for very few people actually living there. And we're paying for four senators, where two is way more than necessary to represent that population.

setpatchaddress··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
The beachball isn't directly related to CPU speed. It indicates the main thread of the foreground app is busy for more than a few seconds. It may be, for example, blocked waiting for something from the network -- which is one reason it's important for macOS developers to move filesystem and network access to background threads as much as possible.
setpatchaddress··on Sinclair TV stations disrupted across the US in apparent ransomware attack
Sinclair is bad, but Facebook and News Corp are much, much worse.
setpatchaddress··on Fast rebases with git-move
These tools seem hugely valuable, but “branchless” seems like a misnomer.
setpatchaddress··on A threat analysis of sideloading [pdf]
The document is actually worth a read. I don’t think the parent poster is accurately representing Apple’s position.
setpatchaddress··on Poll finds more than half of Bay Area residents plan to leave for good
We pay more than enough in state taxes to fund the f’n roads. They should be in better shape than they frequently are.
setpatchaddress··on Poll finds more than half of Bay Area residents plan to leave for good
Downtown MV is still pretty nice, and beats the heck out of most of the south bay. Not as charming as it used to be, though. The big used book store moving away was a huge loss.
setpatchaddress··on Vast majority think life in SF Bay Area getting worse, want to leave, poll finds
Yes, progressives really have their collective heads up their asses on SALT. AOC and Liz Warren loving a Republican tax scheme designed to punish blue states is something to behold.
setpatchaddress··on Tesla’s headquarters will move to Austin
I assume by "California politics" you mean taxes? Got news for you about TX property tax, chief.
setpatchaddress··on Asahi Linux for M1 Macs: progress report for September 2021
Just curious: if someone was inclined to build a set of good (correct style, well-documented, etc) patches to support those extensions, why would the kernel refuse them?

(Put another way: I'm wondering whether you think the difficulty is technical or political.)

setpatchaddress··on Before General Magic there was Paradigm (2018)
My impression was that they were high on their own supply and there was no adult supervision at all, which I think aligns with your impression.
setpatchaddress··on Before General Magic there was Paradigm (2018)
I wouldn’t be that pejorative about it — the Magic Cap UI was actually useful — but yes, that’s closer.
setpatchaddress··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
This just seems to be establishing proper boundaries?

I don't know what specifically motivated this PR, but I assume something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning .

setpatchaddress··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
This is a very slanted and misleading title. The title of the commit is "Remove abuse enabling language" and it appears to do just that.
setpatchaddress··on Apple didn't revolutionize power supplies; new transistors did (2012)
> it's a well-studied economic fact that monopolists generally sell higher quality products

What does this have to do with Apple, which has neither the completely captive market that AT&T did nor the overwhelming market control that IBM did?

setpatchaddress··on Former U.S. officials describe details of the CIA’s proposals to abduct Assange
It’s not just “Establishment Democrats”. He literally acted as a stooge for the Russian government in publishing DNC emails but suppressing damaging information on Republicans.
setpatchaddress··on New CA law allows to pull identifying info of gun owners from state registry
Any actual lawyer want to confirm exactly what this law does? I read the text and I’m actually not sure, and one shouldn’t as a rule trust the submitter’s title as a summary on a politically-loaded topic without verification.

In particular, when is this information collected and by whom?

setpatchaddress··on AMD’s Lisa Su
What’s the issue with background task management on iOS?
setpatchaddress··on John Stossel sues Facebook for allegedly defaming him with fact-check
Formerly famous. He's one of those formerly small-L libertarians like Dennis Miller who took hard right turns after 9/11.
setpatchaddress··on John Stossel sues Facebook for allegedly defaming him with fact-check

setpatchaddress··on A Short History of Objective-C (2017)
Sure. If you want a SmallTalk that you can use to build real apps, ObjC is your best choice.
setpatchaddress··on A Short History of Objective-C (2017)
Two red flags:

- the exception philosophy seems wrong-headed to me — you want to build language features that encourage handling of routine runtime issues without the overhead of C++-style exceptions

- the claim that the runtime is faster than Apples’s runtime is very citation-needed

setpatchaddress··on Cinepaint: The long forgotten GIMP fork that once powered the cinema industry
ISTR that the early Pixar movie were simply rerendered at higher resolution from the original assets?
