sethish··on Ask HN: Is Visual Studio Code the Emacs of 21st century?
So long as 99.9% of vscode users are using a proprietary distribution, I wouldn't consider it comparable to emacs.
sethish··on Linux developers threaten to pull “kill switch”
I appreciate this website trying to reach out to someone to see if this threat has teeth. But I don't trust RMS nor ESR to know the relevant law, not being lawers. And I don't trust ESR to be truthful when an issue aligns with his personal opinions.
sethish··on Show HN: Ghuser.io – Complete GitHub profiles
You may want to delete my profile request, I have somewhere between 50k and 60k repositories and it tends to crash services. (user: sethwoodworth)
sethish··on Has there been progress in philosophy?
Philosophy is sophistry. I like R. Scott Bakker's take on the semantic apocalypse, and the lack of progress in philosophy. https://rsbakker.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/what-is-the-semant...
sethish··on Python 2 will be replaced with Python 3 in the next RHEL major release
Python is used in more places, with more cranky people.
sethish··on Python 2 will be replaced with Python 3 in the next RHEL major release
Are you afraid of network security attacks to your embedded hardware? If not, then you probably don't care about missing security updates. What are you concerned about with python2.7 no longer being supported? Like, are you worried about getting python2.7 installed on a new piece of hardware five years down the road? I understand you dislike the tone from the python3 devs, but I don't know what you would like instead.
sethish··on Ask HN: Providing cheaper EdTech tools for rural zones
What you're doing sounds incredibly expensive in terms of developer hours. Are you certain you've explored the world of pre existing open content?
sethish··on Ask HN: Providing cheaper EdTech tools for rural zones
You can mount a USB stick on a phone. But a phone for each child would serve the same purpose.
sethish··on How do people manage hundreds of Git repositories?
I haven't found anything off-the-shelf that helps. I manage a project with > 50k repositories in a GitHub organization. For the past few years I've been developing software that helps with my [particular goals](https://github.com/gitenberg-dev/gitberg), but I'm afraid there isn't much there that may help you.
sethish··on Instant +100% command line productivity boost
That's a gnome-terminal feature, not at the level of ZSH. There may be a css handle for lib-vte, but I'm not aware of that being an option otherwise. The KDE terminal emulator Konsole does support line spacing, opacity, and many other things gnome-terminal is missing.
sethish··on The Google memo isn’t sexist or anti-diversity, it’s science
Private companies are not free speech zones. Not firing this person would have been a Title VII violation and opened them to lawsuits.
sethish··on The Google memo isn’t sexist or anti-diversity, it’s science
The manifesto didn't stop at citing statistics.
sethish··on Why James Watson Has Become Optimistic about Curing Cancer
James Watson has also been disgraced in the academic world and removed from his academic positions for his views on women and people of color. His views are offensive, but also not backed by solid science. Given his heterodox and inaccurate views, I'm not much interested in his views on other topics, nor convinced his opinion should hold much weight. Luckily the rest of the article is just a survey of research having nothing to do with Watson.
sethish··on Dwarf Fortress creator Tarn Adams on simulating most complex magic system ever
You're doing a fair amount of requesting a dwarf to do a job. But you aren't usually commanding a particular dwarf to do a specific job at a specific location. Simcity is reasonably similar.
sethish··on Annotation is now a web standard
But that's generally not how annotator.js is ever implemented. It has user authentication backends (several last I checked). And it is usually used within small teams in apps like http://www.annotationstudio.org/
sethish··on Some Funny Things Happened on the Way to the Moon (2002)
This is great, the article starts out discussing TeX and then proceeds to screw up every instance of `fi` and `fl` by replacing it with terrible ligatures.
sethish··on SpaceVim – Like Spacemacs, but for Vim
The -f option cleans up the security concern of executing an incomplete download at least:

> -f, --fail > (HTTP) Fail silently (no output at all) on server errors.

sethish··on Why I'm Making Python 2.8
> That's not for the manufacturer to decide. Python 3 is like Coca Cola declaring that the New Coke is all people should drink, and stopping production of classic coke.

That is within the rights of a manufacturer though. Coca Cola can continue to produce classic coke because it isn't any more or less complicated to produce than New Coke. The PSF's opinion is the new features they develop are best developed on top of the core changes in Python3, and that adding new features to Python2 is too expensive to maintain in addition to Python3. I feel like the cases are too different to work.

sethish··on Facsimile of the Voynich Manuscript Now Available to Citizen Cryptographers
> Copyright of copies of public domain artworks is odd: the original artwork is not under copyright, but a photo (and possibly a scan?)

This is often claimed by rights holders, but not generally true. The copy must be transformative and have distinct artistic merit. Basically any scan/photo that I/you/we would want from the owner of the book would not be copyrightable.

sethish··on Police Accidentally Record Themselves Conspiring to Fabricate Charges
Did you see the the part of the video where they said they would make up multiple witness complaints about the victim?
sethish··on Support for Hello discontinued in Firefox 49
Disagree. They added a new feature requiring an external service and gave it to everyone by default. Now, Mozilla has opt-in experiments of new features that can be tested and seen by the community before they are integrated by default.
sethish··on Announcing the Android SDK and Lyft Button
I suspect this subsection was edited into the post later, as many previous comments did not read:

> (while earning revenue for every new user your app brings to Lyft)

sethish··on Curl author asks Microsoft to remove 'curl' and 'wget' aliases from PowerShell
They added the buttons so brigades would use those instead of commenting.
sethish··on How to bring science publishing into the 21st century
Does this feel like creating a new gate keeper to anyone else? What happens when the start up closes?
sethish··on GNU founder Stallman: ‘Open source is not free software’
Because something has less legal text does not imply that it is _more_ free. It implies that it changes the default behavior of the law _less_ than a longer text. The BSD license defaults to however the law would otherwise resolve copyright issues. The argument of the GPL is that the default of the law is not sufficient.
sethish··on Uber is Fucked
I think the author's spellcheck is fucked. Probably also their chain of reasoning.
sethish··on Tabs slower than spaces in Firefox
In an argument of tabs vs spaces. Someone always says both. You are that person.
sethish··on A Proposal for a High Resolution Display (2009)
OLPC did the color swizzling back in 2006 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/File:PixelLayoutDiagonal.png
sethish··on Show HN: GitHub v3 API implemented in VimL
What platform are you on that doesn't ship with curl?
sethish··on Alison Macrina: I’m one of the people Jake Appelbaum sexually assaulted
You are skipping the whole section where he asked and she said no. Do you not find /consent/ a relevant part of the conversation?
