sethgecko··on Redis Turns 10 – How it started with a single post on Hacker News
The literal translation from Greek is “unpublished” which refers to a short incident irrelevant enough to not be part of the main story. In modern Greek anecdoto means joke.
sethgecko··on A Guide to Python's Magic Methods (2012)
Ubuntu 18.04 ships with Python 3.6 and no python2
sethgecko··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
The training phase is when you are trying to minimise your loss function by trying different weights each iteration.

Once that is finished, you have a trained model which you can use by providing input and getting an output (with the weights frozen).

The training phase is very expensive computationally because you have to calculate the gradient of your loss function on potentially huge tensors.

The execution phase is not that expensive and commercial laptops will be likely able to run the model without any problems.

sethgecko··on Freezing Python’s Dependency Hell
`pipenv clean` uninstalls all packages not specified in the lock file
sethgecko··on Freezing Python’s Dependency Hell
I think you are supposed to use `pipenv sync` on the remote to get the pinned versions from the lock file

sethgecko··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
This video that was uploaded yesterday explains very well how humans inherently value scarcity, even from a very young age. It could be shells/weird looking stones/trading cards/gold/cryptocurrency. If it is rare humans will value it.

If you could create diamonds at will in a lab the price of it's price is bound to go down significantly, it's not just a matter of supply and demand.

sethgecko··on Pwned Passwords in Practice: Real World Examples of Blocking the Worst Passwords
I think what he means is that searching by full hash will be removed in favour of using the /range endpoint (the one I am using)
sethgecko··on Pwned Passwords in Practice: Real World Examples of Blocking the Worst Passwords
This is from the API docs, you are not allowed to pick the number of digits.

sethgecko··on Pwned Passwords in Practice: Real World Examples of Blocking the Worst Passwords
I wrote this small python function to check if a password is part of a breach by transmitting only the first 5 digits of it's hash: https://gist.github.com/mcdallas/d94ecd8b34a6bf57a162a7af0ce...
sethgecko··on Low Level Bit Hacks You Absolutely Must Know
As a Python developer who recently wrote a pure Python ECDSA/bitcoin library, these are very helpful. However performance is not always better. For example I had this function:

    def point_mul(p, d):
        n = p
        q = None

        for i in range(256):
            if d & (1 << i):
                if q is None:
                    q = n
                else:
                    q = point_add(q, n)

            n = point_add(n, n)
        return q
but when i changed the loop to this :

    for i in reversed(format(d, 'b')):
        if i == '1':
I found out it performed much better.
sethgecko··on Facebook Median Pay now $240k
This way you are adding more complexity which in turn adds more loopholes. A good tax framework should be as simple as possible to avoid this type of shenanigans.
sethgecko··on Illegal prime
How do you even calculate pi with such accuracy?
sethgecko··on WeWork to Sell $500M of Bonds in Debut Sale
> Does WeWork own anything real to secure the debt?

From the article: WeWork is issuing seven-year, senior unsecured bonds

sethgecko··on Proof-Of-Work is a Decentralized Clock
Fascinating, I found this article by Vitalik that explains what happened. In v0.8 they swapped from BerkleyDB to LevelDB but due to a bug the two chains started diverting.

sethgecko··on Proof-Of-Work is a Decentralized Clock
That's kind of how NANO (previously Raiblocks) works. One ledger per address.
sethgecko··on Whois public database is in breach of GDPR, according to European authorities

Companies house asks for director name/address/dob when you register a company

sethgecko··on A Python Interpreter Written in Python (2016)
I made something pretty similar the other day. An interpreter for the bitcoin scripting language with a stack and the most used opcodes. Code here : https://github.com/mcdallas/cryptotools/blob/master/btctools...
sethgecko··on Avoid Else, Return Early (2013)

sethgecko··on Keybase is now supported by the Stellar Development Foundation
Only the third party issued tokens have counterparty risk i.e you trust the issuer to redeem them somehow. Is that different than an ethereum ERC20 token? The native asset itself (XLM) has no counterparty risk.

> The only networks capable of providing fast, cheap, worldwide payments are decentralized protocols without trusted third party intermediaries, like Bitcoin (Bitcoin Cash) and Ethereum.

IMO it is a trade off between degree of trust and scalability. Bitcoin requires no trust but has a costly PoW consensus algorithm which does not allow instant transactions and has a very low tps limit. You can't have both (unless someone comes up with a better consensus mechanism)

sethgecko··on European Union plans to tax tech giants on local revenue
Ideally an EU finance minister appointed by the European Parliament.
sethgecko··on Spotify Form F-1
I noticed recently that the new discover weekly songs tend to sync perfectly with my walking speed. I wonder if I subconsciously leaked some bias into my training sample. BPM has to be one of the factors they are matching against.

Here is a blog post that describes one of their machine learning models using neural networks. http://benanne.github.io/2014/08/05/spotify-cnns.html

sethgecko··on Online voting in Finland: Conclusions and recommendations (2017) [pdf]
Is this in the US? In my country you get one envelope and one ballot paper for each party so that wouldn't work.
sethgecko··on Online voting in Finland: Conclusions and recommendations (2017) [pdf]
In the scenario you described above what is to stop you from taking a picture of a different voting card than the one you put in the envelope?
sethgecko··on Robinhood Opens Cryptocurrency Trading
What fees ? I have never paid a single cent in fees in coinbase. Buying/selling with limit orders is free in GDAX and they pay the miner's fees themselves when you withdraw. I don't even know how they make money.
