sesutton··on NIST’s new password rules – what you need to know
There are some companies that make you choose from a list of answers too. United Airlines is one.
sesutton··on Total Nightmare: USB-C and Thunderbolt 3
The USB 3.1 gen1 and gen2 thing still really boggles my mind. It's almost as if the USB-IF was trying to confuse people. Who retroactively renames a standard?
sesutton··on Errors from Microsoft's Cloud
My favorite is if I try to login to my Office 365 account from https://products.office.com and "sucessfully" login then every page on that subdomain starts giving Runtime Error.
sesutton··on More than 90% of ‘genuine’ Apple chargers and cables sold on Amazon are fake
Sorting by best score is equally useless. You get random products that have one 5 star review that are often nothing like what you actually searched for. A better method would be the one described here[0], which reddit uses for its "best" comment sorting.

sesutton··on DOJ challenges landmark Microsoft warrant case
Hopefully they appeal it all the way to the Supreme Court so it can become precedent for the whole country.
sesutton··on Upgrade your SSH keys
The certificate is issued by the DOD's internal CA. Not sure why they're using one for a public facing site though.
sesutton··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
HTML, CSS and SQL aren't programming languages, if Turing completeness is a requirement to be a programming language.
sesutton··on Systemd-logind must be restarted to prevent delay
It's so HN can have its 2 minutes of hate against systemd. A systemd dev opening a GitHub issue[1] was enough to get 194 votes and 284 comments.

sesutton··on Google will use Chrome browsing data for ad tailoring
Ad personalization is on by default. The checkbox that says:

> Also use Google Account activity and information to personalize ads on these websites and apps and store that data in your Google Account

Should be off if you didn't opt-in though. I just tested it with a new Google account and it was off after I opted out.

sesutton··on Google will use Chrome browsing data for ad tailoring
The way the screenshot is cropped is misleading. The actual page makes it clear this feature is opt-in.

If you're logged into a Google account and haven't already made a choice on the page you can see it at http://www.google.com/settings/ads.

sesutton··on Mozilla could walk away from Yahoo deal and get more than $1B
With a deal like that what incentive does Mozilla have to not walk away if someone buys Yahoo? They'll get $1.1 billion dollars for free.
sesutton··on Man sued for $30K over $40 printer he sold on Craigslist
He represents himself, there is no lawyer to punish.
sesutton··on SpaceX lands rocket at sea second time after satellite launch
Pretty sure he means the barge would sink from the big hole he thought the rocket would put in it.
sesutton··on Unmasking the Men Behind Zero Hedge
Throw enough darts at the board and you're bound to hit the bullseye eventually.
sesutton··on Elon Musk Supports His Business Empire with Unusual Financial Moves
>The financial transactions have raised questions on Capitol Hill, where some lawmakers are concerned that money from federal contracts with SpaceX could be used to help SolarCity.

Do these people not understand that money is fungible? It's like pouring two glasses of water into a pitcher and then trying to separate them again.

sesutton··on Intel wants USB-C to replace the headphone jack
>I find that digital devices are complicated enough that, unless I'm buying well-researched, high quality products, compatibility issues lead to glitches. I still encounter lots of glitches with Bluetooth, so I'm not ready to give up my trusty 3.5mm jack as a reliable fallback.

That seems like more of a function of wireless vs wired than analog vs digital. Audio over HDMI or optical seems just as reliable as 3.5mm.

sesutton··on Google's Answer to EU Antitrust Complaints on Android
Has anyone ever successfully fought an EU anti-trust action?
sesutton··on Merkel Grants Turkish Request to Prosecute German Satirist
The law[0] in question specifically says that the federal government has to authorize the prosecution.

sesutton··on Why Go gets criticized so much
Using "golang" instead of "Go" nearly always gives the correct results in my experience.
sesutton··on Cross-platform Rust rewrite of the GNU coreutils
I'm not a Rust expert but everywhere I could find heap::allocate it checks for null.
sesutton··on DeepMind Challenges for StarCraft
I'm a little worried that the AI will quickly develop a simple early game strategy where it sacrifices economy for early units (an "all-in") that never loses because of its perfect unit control.

The AIs unit control speed may have to be limited to get interesting results where it has to use strategy.

sesutton··on Hulk Hogan awarded payout over Gawker sex tapes
The way I interpreted it was that their isn't a free speech angle to either.

>That doesn't remotely describe what happened to the women whose pictures were published a few years back.

According to Tampa police they think the tape was stolen by an employee of Bubba the Lovesponge[0]. The only essential difference I can see is that the photos of the female celebrities were created with their knowledge, which I don't think is much of a difference at all.

sesutton··on The Next Front in the New Crypto Wars: WhatsApp
The source code for PGP 5 was made legally available outside the US in a similar method though without translating it.

sesutton··on GCC 6: -Wmisleading-indentation vs. “goto fail;”
GCC warns with -Wextra (or -Wempty-body) and clang warns by default.
sesutton··on Answers to your questions about Apple and security
Some of the Snowden leaks showed that the NSA was intercepting servers in transit and installing firmware with a backdoor.
sesutton··on Google Cloud Debugger: use local source, Go and Node.js support, IntelliJ plugin
I'm new to go as well but seems to me what you want is to set $GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP to a copy of your $GOROOT then run $GOROOT/src/make.bash

> I'm trying to run someone's freshly-cloned Go project.

"go run x.go" will do that.

sesutton··on Too many people have peed in the pool
This is an amusing comment because that's not how averages work.
sesutton··on Apple Ordered to Pay $625M to Patent Troll in FaceTime Lawsuit
I don't think it's a coincidence there is that there is a ice skating rink right in front of the courthouse in Marshall, Texas with giant Samsung logos all over it (relevant John Oliver clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bxcc3SM_KA#t=7m53s) .
sesutton··on Oracle deprecating Java applets in Java 9
Did anybody ever use Java applets for games? It's been a long time since I've seen a Java applet in the wild, and I can't remember any games.
sesutton··on Stop Patent Trolls: Support the Innovation Act of 2015
