server_man3000··on Join the on-call roster, it'll change your life
Oncall being in the job description just doesn’t rationalize the abuse and insanity Ive seen myself and my team go through.

I don’t think a bullet in a job description and expected baseline pay for a tech job is reasonable enough to accept that either.

server_man3000··on Join the on-call roster, it'll change your life
Oncall is complete bullshit and the fact that we have standardised this without Additional pay has greatly affected my life working in big tech.
server_man3000··on IBM to acquire Confluent
I interned there one summer and I felt like 9 years ago when I was there the company died 30 years prior. It’s a super weird place to work
server_man3000··on Nearly 60% of Last Year's Graduates Still Haven't Landed Their First Job
This survey is from a resume site of 1000 people roughly. A resume site is obviously going to target a majority of people in the job hunt. Additionally it was done in May around graduation time.
server_man3000··on Spectrum ISP SSL/TLS Interception Bug
They are also probably collecting DNS records from millions of customers too or inspecting SNI on TLS handshakes to know what sites each customer is visiting.

ECH and DOH people!

server_man3000··on Ask HN: Cloudflare WAF Alternatives?
Not worth. Competitors like Bunny CDN which is much smaller will inevitably have a much worse incident as they grow. Every large company will inevitably have a couple bad incidents so asking “what other large company will never have incidents” is a moronic perspective IMO
server_man3000··on Ask HN: What alternatives to Docker Desktop are people using?

server_man3000··on Ask HN: Moving to another country, how to make friends
I’m into cardio related fitness things, but hoping to avoid associating drinking with friendship too much.
server_man3000··on Learning to Learn
When I’ve gotten deep into a topic I’ve actually almost ALWAYS learned that textbooks are the best way to learn things.

The internet is full of information. Sometimes it’s too much, unstructured or tangential to the goal at hand. Textbooks, in my experience, are truly written by the experts. It’s been vetted, rigorously reviewed and fact checked. It’s not inspired by influencers or clickbait.

Obviously YMMV, but when you find a top recommended textbook, it’s usually miles beyond a YouTube video or medium blog for deeper level content. It usually flows better and makes more sense as you study consistently.

server_man3000··on Ask HN: How to "Relearn" Motivation?
Can you give an example? I think my current problem is that I can’t formulate a goal that I deep down find motivating enough to attain. Maybe that’s depression, but I’m not sure.

I get that it’s pretty subjective, but I am just curious how people think.

server_man3000··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
There’s a happy medium somewhere though and the US doesn’t meet it at all. I can’t even take a bus from my neighborhood in a California city to the grocery store in a timely manner and it’s often cancelled
server_man3000··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
Didn’t this start as unlimited anywhere for 9 euros no strings attached?

I LOVE the German transit system (although Denmark wins in cleanliness). However, Germany is a bit predatory with this new system. You can ONLY purchase this ticket as a subscription model. If you’re a tourist, you must cancel before the 10th of the month or you get auto rebilled.

Additionally, there are so many apps that resell the ticket as some white label system, so it was very confusing to purchase (you cannot buy them at the machines).

The price hike is the wrong direction here if we are reducing that much time on the road. Kudos though for the great rail systems. The USA has a lot to learn here and it’s baffling how terrible it is here. I doubt I’d ever need a car in Germany given the rail system was much more convenient. In the USA I spend 10-15 mins trying to park any time I go anywhere

server_man3000··on Ask HN: How to plan time off by quitting?
What’s typical pay like in the UK and how is your life over there?
server_man3000··on Ask HN: How to plan time off by quitting?
Thanks for the long reply. How did you go about getting into freelance work? Freelancing seems like the path I’d enjoy, but it gives the feeling of a starving artist, do you feel that way? Also, are you in the USA, I’m curious on how you handle medical insurance.

Truthfully, my expenses are rent (HCOL) and food. I have no debt. I live a modest life in a very expensive city due to my partners job.

server_man3000··on Threat actor abuses Cloudflare tunnels to deliver remote access trojans
Your sources are ass man. Yah newsflash, CF is a hosting site and people make phishing pages. This shit is true with literally any cloud provider today that’s relevant on the internet.

server_man3000··on Ask HN: Where can I have good, technical discussion on random topics?
It’s a good point. I was on a niche Apache mailing list for a bit and of course I’m talking to the world experts about some niche serialization format from the creator himself et al.

I’m curious if they resent random questions though. For example, if I’m asking Linus about btrees he’s probably going to tell me to fuck off

server_man3000··on Ask HN: Where can I have good, technical discussion on random topics?
Mostly the format. It takes more than just people. HN is comments, you don’t get notified and it’s not a typical forum.

I love HN, but I’m looking for more suitable mediums for such discussion

server_man3000··on Why I Find Bullshit Work Intolerable
Companies are creative until they have large, multi-million dollar contracts and engineers are more of a cost center to keep the lights on.

Most tech is bullshit no matter which way you spin it. I need to pay my bills, so I keep quiet in the meantime. However, 90% of what I feel like I do seems like a waste. Is it a waste for the company? Not sure.
