serpix··on The hypersane are among us, if only we are prepared to look
Your problem starts with having a problem starving. All the rest of your suffering follows from there. If starving for a bit is not a problem then looking at trees is bliss. Laziness/victim complex is impossible unless there is a fundamental desire or conflict against just being in whatever there is. The hypersane/enlightened/realized whatever you call it have no problems whatsoever with what is happening and thus they do not suffer.
serpix··on Big Pharma is using faux generics to keep drug prices high, critics say
How about saving lives for an incentive? Pharmas don't exactly have a good track record for doing the right thing with the current incentive of becoming filthy rich.

This argument is so worn out it has become a cargo cult parroted response.

serpix··on A week with Hy
Hy is what got me into lisp dialects and parted the clouds on the bliss of simplicity of the syntax and made me see that I had been living like a savage with C-style languages and OO slavery.

Give it a try! It is really fun and significantly lowers the barrier off entry to the land of lisp!

serpix··on Living Near Trees, Not Just Green Space, Improves Wellbeing
Helsinki has a forest smack in the center going north. slightly to the east is another green corridor going northeast and ending in a National Park (Sipoonkorpi) . There is another big national park (Nuuksio) just to the north west.

Helsinki central itself is sterile compared to actual forests.

Most of southern Finland however is deforested or wood plantations. About 5% of the area is natural state forest.

serpix··on Ask HN: How did you automate your day job?
This checks out. Banks have no problem spending millions on poor solutions but zero interest in rewarding optimisations.
serpix··on A $5,600 Electric Makeover for Old Diesel Cars
You will need batteries with hydrogen fuel cells due to the fact the cells do not throttle quickly based on energy demand. The battery is required as a buffer for quickly discharging larger amounts of energy. So in effect you require a full blown electric drive train but with a smaller battery. In my opinion it is way less complex to just increase the size of the battery and get rid off the hydrogen parts.
serpix··on The Lithium Mine Buildup Is Outpacing the Electric-Car Boom
twice? You only need brakes on an EV to stay still at the lights or in an emergency brake. That is it. The brakes last well over the entire lifetime of the car.
serpix··on Could wooden building be a solution to climate change?
Currently staying in a tiny log cabin with outside temperatures in about 25-30c and somewhat humid as well. Inside it stays comfortably 25-26c and 30% humidity. Does not feel hot at all.
serpix··on The Man with the Golden Airline Ticket
We have unlimited, uncapped 4G plans in Finland and probably most of Europe does.
serpix··on Understanding Kafka with Factorio
yeah at this point I consider a game like that solved and my interest in it disappears along with any craving to explore more. It is solved, move on.
serpix··on Antarctic sea ice – rapid decreases, reduced to lowest area in 40 years
from what is reported already happening, expect massive (hundreds of millions) climate refugees to really get going within the next five to ten years.
serpix··on Magical, Mystical JavaScript Transducers
because there is dirty mutation and it relies entirely on side effects to work. (this is sarcastic, that is exactly how one should go about this one example case.)

It however is a completely different thing when longer chains of filter / map need to come along and the true power of transducers is needed.

In clojure I've had to use transducers at least three times in the course of the last four years!

serpix··on EC2 Instance Connect
This happens so often in Devops that a good rule of thumb is to really think it long and hard before doing any handrolling.

Today's dev ops stacks move so fast nobody is an expert on a single stack for longer than a week.

serpix··on Average Global Temperatures since 1850
so are you implying someone is methodically rigging up the data to show an anomaly for shits and giggles?
serpix··on Iceland tire of tourists trashing their nature
The key is accessibility. If you have a good road then you get people who treat nature as bad as themselves.

The higher up without accessible road or further in towards tougher trails and you start to have people there who have the will and stamina to be there and take the necessary precautions.

serpix··on [dead]
Well it looks and feels quite damn different on the groud as well. Went to Delhi briefly for a few hours on February and I cannot believe people live there. The air quality would warrant immediate evacuation of the area in any other city in Europe and maybe in America as well. In the two hours I waited for a taxi to get me out of there I already started to feel like I'm breathing smoke from a bonfire. Black snot came out my nose for a few days after as well.

I would not live in such air quality for any amount of wealth, it is way way beyond liveable there.

serpix··on What We Want Doesn’t Always Make Us Happy
you have no idea how shit your body and mind feels because of smoking. Your baseline when smoking is way lower than when you have a healthy cardiovascular system. Imagine climbing 10 flights of stairs without going out of breath. Running 10km daily without it showing. Living past 65 without carrying an oxygen tank.
serpix··on Changes to Models S and X allow them to travel longer without larger batteries
Yeah my dad and my mother both had their cars broken into and both of their steering wheels stolen. The door locks were surgically removed and nothing else was touched or ruined. They only removed those parts and went their way.
serpix··on Samsung's folding phone breaks for reviewers
I wonder if they bothered to test it with some sand on it and in freezing conditions / variable conditions.
serpix··on Animating URLs with JavaScript and Emojis
Better trash the past hour of history since every animation is a separate history entry :D
serpix··on Scala, Part II
Hot Reload in the year 2019 is still a hard problem, although DCEVM seems to be solving it for now.

All the problems the author talks about were there in 2007 and are still there today. I bailed after the countless breaking updates to Scala and SBT. the level of productivity with a Lisp and REPL driven development is unmatched.

I just popped open an old Scala/Java source for doing a little maintenance after using Clojure for the last few years. There are entire files that could be replaced with a single function. Dozens of classes are complete unnecessary complexity only due to the type system forcing type wizardry. The SBT file I took one look and closed it immediately.

Clojure + Spec / Plumatic Schema and REPL driven development backed by tests is so good I have trouble imagining how it could get better.

serpix··on A three-page paper that shook philosophy, with lessons for software engineers
Not good enough, point to that which knows. Where is it? Who knows it? If there is a knower to that, where is it.. Keep going with this investigation and realize there is no knower, only knowing.

Eastern philosophy has nailed this thousands of years ago and we westerners are up to this day totally in the dark. We actively treat the I as a concrete object that really exists as an entity. It does not hold any closer examination and evaporates entirely the closer it is questioned.

serpix··on Dealing with past trauma may be the key to breaking addiction
those are not mild addictions at all.

Avoidance is triggered when the mind is scared and it will grasp at anything external rather than go inside. Going inside will bring you to your self and this means ego death.

Try it. Next time you observe the mind when you reach for the phone. Wait just a tiny bit and observe the emotion just under the surface noise.

serpix··on Learning Clojure: comparing with Java streams
This still stands, macros are a really high level abstraction and do not compose. Almost always a function is enough. But if it saves a good chunk of repetition on something complex then go for it.

A good example of code with macro overkill is compojure-api. There is just so many clever macros that you need to read the original source code with a microscope to know what the code expands to.

serpix··on Molecule produced during fasting has anti-aging effect on vascular system
Well fasting has been a trend since I don't even know, well before ancient greece at least. Western culture != entire world.
serpix··on A new way to remove ice buildup without power or chemicals
Or above 50degrees latitudes
serpix··on California Moves to Require 100% Clean Electricity by 2045
get a van instead if you need to move things. Those pickups are ridiculous in their energy consumption and waste of resources.
serpix··on A Road to Common Lisp
To date I have not come up with a situation needing protocols or objects in Clojure that could not be just done with functional programming.

The real killer superpowers come from extend-type and extend-protocol. You can modify existing java/clojure libraries functionality like magic. The functional equivalent is with-binding if I remember correctly.

Some Clojure libraries use protocols heavily and IMHO not just necessary.

serpix··on Publishing an iOS App with ClojureScript and React Native
Well luckily I started with a version that was not that hard to update as of yet.

I expect it to get harder though but this being a side project I'm not that worried.

serpix··on Ask HN: Android programming with Clojure?
Great! You can find a great collection of resources here:

http://cljsrn.org

Basically React Native plus re-frame and your choice of either re-natal or Expo.
