serpix··on After 6 years, I'm over GraphQL
You are correct and I agree with you. GraphQL can be used effectively like this and I've seen one example where GraphQL is used like this. New endpoint can be defined very quickly and it is essentially like a REST API with the possibility of the client specifying what data it wants back (as you described).

The other extreme end example is to expose by default the entire data model (PostGraphile) and then getting lost in the customisation and authorisation.

Then we just come back full round trip to REST where the backend clearly defines what is allowed and what is returned. So using GraphQL it is unnecessary complicated to safeguard against a caller querying for all of the data and then some. For example the caller queries nested structures ad infinitum possibly even triggering a recursive loop that wakes up somebody at 3am.
serpix··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
I use combinations of the two. Sometimes it really is worth it to write a comment on what one is trying to achieve and just let it autocomplete the entire thing. And sometimes just for autocompleting a 'for loop' - a small block of code that one already has in their minds.
serpix··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
This is how I've used it: "I want to write a function that reduces a map of customer data to a list of their phone numbers from their primary addresses only or contact address if there is no primary address"

and then you look at the resulting flatmap, filter, reduce blob of AI generated code and figure out if what it does is correct for about a minute.

Just logged in to iCloud using chrome on a mac. Scanned a QR with iPhone and boom that was that.
serpix··on New Mexico: Psychologists to dress up as wizards when providing expert testimony
most people are just a few words away from a psychosis or a complete breakdown.

Edit: to illustrate. Your phone rings. You hear the words. You know which words, the unthinkable ones.

serpix··on How the California forest that was Endor in 'Return of the Jedi' was obliterated (2022)
I hear this from time time and it is usually said by people who do not frequently visit forests. They are not at all same, not in the slightest. Nature has so much variation due to landscape such as hills, species competition, water distribution. It is like saying one city on earth is the same as the rest of them. See one suburb in Korea and it is exactly the same in Minnesota. This is just nonsense.

Commercial units coupled with a heat pump rival ground source heat pumps at a massive 4 - 5 COP. They even heat water and can take in solar heat piping.

serpix··on Thermoelectric heating stands at the brink of commercialization
The solution to this is and has been for centuries is to add mass to the stove.
serpix··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
yeah, it's depressing to start working at dark and stop working at dark. What a waste of life.
serpix··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
you're lucky, it is 3:30pm in Finland. Dusk at 3pm. Up north it is even worse, although they've got the Borealis and usually snow.
serpix··on OpenAI board stands firm in face of staff revolt over Sam Altman's ouster
Assuming people to act rationally can really bite you hard. Life experience has taught that people are mostly irrational beings with occasional rational episodes.
serpix··on Bhutan declares its entire street dog population fully sterilized and vaccinated
Similar experience. One of them even tried to go for my leg. Had a very very bright flashlight which I used to blind them. After that I walked with a sharp ended walking pole and would not hesitate to stab them with it. It was a very hairy situation. Did not encounter the pack again since I stopped moving around the town at dark.

In what temperature, gradient, tires, road type, traffic or speed? kWh is better.

serpix··on Oxford study proves heat pumps triumph over fossil fuels in the cold
How cold does it get then? EVs are good to -35C and most cars should be ok down to -30C. Idling solves nothing about the frozen tires and stiff axles and shock absorbers. Best would be to insulate the car with a simple tarp and I bet -50C wouldn't be a problem.
serpix··on Plans to cut speed limits ‘will significantly improve road safety' – minister
130km/h is just ludicrous. The consumption compared to 100km/h is about 50% extra and the time saved is wiped out with just one bathroom break.
serpix··on Total data loss after botched GitOps and failed backups
This would also mean they did not have a staging environment for verifying a botched deployment. Very unfortunate and a double disappointment for finding out backups were missing.
serpix··on We’re all just temporarily abled
I feel very conflicted when seeing young people who are out of shape. They have the best possible potential for increasing fitness due to fast recovery. An investment that pays massive dividends in a very very short time. A fit body pays back on so many levels it is a paradox why would anyone not be fit.
serpix··on Therapy as a way of aligning with your subconscious
Well I was both. Really hurt by a toxic person because I wasn't honest to myself how bad i felt with her.
serpix··on Therapy as a way of aligning with your subconscious
This makes us engineer types vulnerable to the irrational nature of people. We try to make sense out of irrational behavior and choose wrong partners or company due to it. We try to apply logic where logic is controversial. An OCD sufferer can clean their hands five times every time yet their teeth are rotten. We try to look and look to a person realizing their illogical ways and we suffer unimaginable amounts while waiting.
serpix··on The Psychotherapy Myth
Go to therapy. It will be very effective due to you being introspective and logical. Your logical reasoning will be put to test by the therapist and what you thought was logical will be challenged constantly. This will illuminate your entire thinking. This is damn near impossible to do on your own. You would rather take a plane to travel a thousand miles than crawl there on your knees.
