serial_dev··on Every layer of review makes you 10x slower
Software engineers are pushed to their limits (and beyond). Unrealistic expectations are established by Twitter "I shipped an Uber clone in 2 hours with Claude" forcing every developer to crank out PRs, managers are on the look out for any kind of perceived inefficiency in tools like GetDX and Span.

If devs are expected to ship 10x faster (or else!), then they will find a way to ship 10x faster.

serial_dev··on Grandparents are glued to their phones, families are worried [video]
It’s all fine, but in that case also do not worry about this hypothetical old person spending time the way they like to.

serial_dev··on The 100 hour gap between a vibecoded prototype and a working product
The way I see it, the NFT part is actually just for convenience to distribute AI generated images.

It could have been a web app, but with NFTs and Farcaster miniapps, you market to people who are willing and able to spend using their wallet instead of asking “normies” for credit card information for a 2 dollar custom image (that you could also prompt out of a free Gemini session).

With Farcaster, you also already have the profile picture of the user, one less hurdle again.

serial_dev··on It's time to move your docs in the repo
Sentry MCP is great, “find out top 10 issues by users affected, check what it would take to fix and if you think it’s a low risk fix, apply it. Open a PR that links to the issues and explain the issue and the fix in three sentences max”.
serial_dev··on 1M context is now generally available for Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6
Please don’t pop the AI bubble, bro. Stop asking questions, bro. Believe the hype, bro.
serial_dev··on Elon Musk pushes out more xAI founders as AI coding effort falters
Distribution is also important. Cursor is a great normie tool (I’m one of them), with probably more enterprise deals than the competition.
serial_dev··on Show HN: s@: decentralized social networking over static sites
It would be nice to start with what this actually is from the user’s point of view.

Forking, paths, JSON, decentralized, encryption, key rotation, etc and I still have no idea why I would bother and who else could use it (a decentralized social network is only so much fun if you are the only one on it).

serial_dev··on Agents that run while I sleep
> sounds like alot of work and expense for something that is meant to make programming easier and cheaper.

Not if you are an AI gold rush shovel salesman.

From the article:

> I've run Claude Code workshops for over 100 engineers in the last six months

serial_dev··on Debian decides not to decide on AI-generated contributions
Ownership and responsibility are useless when a YouTuber tells it to their million followers that GitHub contributions are valued by companies and this is how you can create a pull request with AI in three minutes, and you get hundred low value noise PRs opened by university students from the other side of the globe. It’s Hacktoberfest on steroids.
serial_dev··on No, it doesn't cost Anthropic $5k per Claude Code user
I’m not maxing them out… I have issues that I need to fix, features I need to develop, and I have things I want to learn.

When I have a feeling that these tools will speed me up, I use them.

My client pays for a couple of these tools in an enterprise deal, and I suspect most of us on the team work like that.

If my goal was to max out every tool my client pays, I’d be working 24hrs a day and see no sunlight ever.

I guess it’s like the all you can eat buffet. Everybody eats a lot, but if you eat so much that you throw up and get sick, you are special.

serial_dev··on Is legal the same as legitimate: AI reimplementation and the erosion of copyleft
So if I read any LGPL code in my life, I can never think about working on something similar in my life?
serial_dev··on UUID package coming to Go standard library
It’s nice to have a break from AI FUD. It reminds me of a time when I could browse HN without getting anxiety immediately, because nowadays you can’t open a comment section without finding a comment about how you ngmi.
serial_dev··on Open Camera is a FOSS camera app for Android

serial_dev··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
I’m not sure it is just that, I don’t even see positions listed where I would like to work. For salary ranges, I see lower upper limits than my second best offer three n half years ago. Considering the high inflation, that’s crazy.

I would not mind switching but 1. I don’t see interesting positions 2. they don’t pay well, and only 3. they might not even want me.

It might also be just my niche, but finding a good position feels completely impossible for me.

I am doing cross platform mobile development and I’m wondering how I could transition into backend development or I started even considering the decentralized finance…

serial_dev··on Zed new terms required to be 18 years old
Same experience, I heard about them in some podcasts, it all sounded good, performance, from the ground up, rust, collaboration, whatever.

Tried it, it was the worse experience I had with an editor since I started my career… then I tried it again because maybe they figured it out… it’s still bad.

serial_dev··on Zed new terms required to be 18 years old
I am not sure I have the same definition of “love my editor again” (from their landing page) as the Zed team… my definition is PG. I don’t see a reason that I need to be 18 to use a code editor.
serial_dev··on If AI writes code, should the session be part of the commit?
Or just "write a good commit message based on our session, pls", then both humans and llms can use it.
serial_dev··on Our Agreement with the Department of War
Didn't fully follow the saga, but isn't their "imposing their own morals" is that "we do not want to allow you to let our AI go on an unsupervised killing spree"?
serial_dev··on I rendered 1,418 confusables over 230 fonts. Most aren't confusable to the eye
Was it a demo site? The font looks very wonky, not sure if I should copy-paste from it.
serial_dev··on AIs can't stop recommending nuclear strikes in war game simulations
Also, if it was a game, even I used nukes the first chance I got.

It’s unfair and sensationalist to claim anything happened because AI recommended using nukes in a nukes war simulator…

It’s like saying we are blood thirsty gangsters because we played GTA.

serial_dev··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
At least, for me, the level of panic would depend on how long I can pay for rent / mortgage and covering the costs of having a family, diapers, food, heating, paying the bills, so basically everything that makes sure that a temporary change in employment status doesn't result in multi-decade negative effects on my family's life.

If I could cover these with my savings for 1y+, I'd give zero fs about getting laid off. Unfortunately, I can't, so time to focus on spending less, earning more, saving more.

serial_dev··on Pope tells priests to use their brains, not AI, to write homilies
This kind of headline is something we could have only imagined as a joke 5 years ago.
serial_dev··on I made ChatGPT and Google tell I'm a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion
Exactly, the point is that you can make LLMs say anything. If you narrow down enough, a single blog post is enough. As the lie gets bigger and less narrow, you probably need 10x-100x... that. But the proof of concept is there, and it doesn't sound like it's too hard.

And also right that it's similar to SEO, maybe the only difference is that in this case, the tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, ...) are saying the lies authoritatively, whereas in SEO, you are given a link to made up post. Some people (even devs who work with this daily) forget that these tools can be influenced easily and they make up stuff all the time, to make sure they can answer you something.

serial_dev··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
My understanding is that it mainly fails when you try it in speech mode, because it is the fastest model usually. I tried yesterday all major providers and they were all correct when I typed my question.
serial_dev··on Ring owners are returning their cameras
There was an ad, how the Ring cameras can organize a "search party" for your "puppies", basically turning the whole neighborhood into a surveillance operation. Even though they wrapped the whole big brother feature into "sad little girl lost their cute puppy", it was too obvious.

Ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OheUzrXsKrY

With that said, I'm not sure it will have any long term effect on them... sure some people return their stuff, make a post about it, but it's like (insert people with certain political affiliation) cancelling (insert big brand) by burning their stuff. It makes a splash in social, but I'm not sure it really significantly changes user behavior.

serial_dev··on See how many words you have written in Hacker News comments
I prefer the word “reading”, too.

I’m reading the comments almost every day, and I write them only if I think I have a point, insight that the other 50 people in the comments didn’t have.

serial_dev··on There's only one Woz, but we can all learn from him
Then they justify it because they vibe-coded a proof of concept in Tauri, and it was even worse.
serial_dev··on AI Lazyslop and Personal Responsibility
Lazyslop PRs offload the work to code reviewers while keeping all the benefits to the PR creator.

Now creating a 1600 loc PR is about ten minutes, reviewing it at the very least an hour. Mike submits a bunch of PRs, the rest of the team tries to review it to prevent the slop from causing an outage at night or blowing up the app. Mike is a hero, he really embraced AI, he leveraged it to get 100x productivity.

This works for a while, until everyone realizes that Mike gets the praise, they get reprimanded for not shipping their features fast enough. After a couple of these sour experiences, other developers will follow suit, embrace the slop. Now there is nobody that stops the train wreck. The ones who really cared, left, the ones who cared at least a little gave up, and churn out slop.

serial_dev··on AI Lazyslop and Personal Responsibility
> put all his changes in an already approved PR and sneak merge it in another PR. I don’t blame Mike, I blame the system that forced him to do this.

Oh you should definitely blame Mike for this. It’s like blaming the system when someone in the kitchen spits in the food of customer. Working with people like this is horrible because you know they don’t mind to lie cheat deceive.
