sergius··on Principia Mathematica is modern and insightful
Oops wrong principia :-)
sergius··on Principia Mathematica is modern and insightful
This book is an interesting approach to The Principia:

Magnificent Principia (2013), by Colin Pask

sergius··on Unix Isn't for Agents
Unix is a base layer that provides enough abstractions to build services. Perhaps there are better abstractions if one looks at Plan 9... but that never took off unfortunately.

What they want is a framework for persisting stuff... that is an application level service... go ahead and build one.

sergius··on Why do we keep gravitating toward complexity?
This is a perennial problem, see The Mythical Man Month

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mythical_Man-Month

Or if you wan to have more fun read Systemantics

sergius··on A CarFax for Used PCs; Hewlett Packard wants to give old laptops new life
Isn't that caller eBay?
sergius··on How three years at McKinsey shaped my second startup
Not to mention the creation of a single point of failure for a critical service...
sergius··on The Soul of an Old Machine
I liked M. Waldrop's book: The Dream Machine

sergius··on The DuckDB Local UI
Would it be possible to install duckdb extensions in python using packages instead of dialing back home to the extension service? Lots of companies block direct connections to that service but allow packages via JFrog's Artifactory.
sergius··on Mathics: A free, open-source alternative to Mathematica
Interestingly this is better in terms of precision but as an interface for math is still behind good old paper and pencil.

The interface is still 30+ years old...

sergius··on Show HN: GUI for editing Mermaid class diagrams
With Draw.io embedding Mermaid diagrams and plug-ins available for VSCode and other IDEs, why is this so special?
sergius··on Raspberry Pi 500 makes an 8GB Pi 5 into a compact, inexpensive desktop PC
And they still have soldered RAM and no option to add an SSD... who is this for?
sergius··on Cell-Based Architecture Enhances Modern Distributed Systems
There is so much our software needs to improve to reach the level of sophistication of even plants :-)

sergius··on Writing a C Compiler: Build a Real Programming Language from Scratch
How does it compare with N.Wirth's?

sergius··on A Git story: Not so fun this time
This story is missing the impact that Tom Lord's TLA had on the git design.
sergius··on We must seek a widely-applicable science of systems
I would recommend reading:

Complexity by M. Waldrop https://commoncog.com/learning-from-waldrop-complexity/

The Systems Bible by J. Gall (This one is an odd one but it is good for developing a sense of humor) https://novelinvestor.com/notes/systemantics-how-systems-wor...

sergius··on Calculating Empires: A Genealogy of Technology and Power Since 1500
I wonder how this connects with this book: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_the_West_Rules%E2%80%94For...
sergius··on Arm says it wants all Snapdragon X Elite laptops destroyed
Does this make Risk V more attractive?
sergius··on Show HN: Mesop – Open-source Python UI framework
How does it compare to https://nicegui.io/ ?

How does it compare with https://flet.dev/ ?

Does it compete in the niche of making simple things easy and hard things possible?

sergius··on Jim Simons has died
You should read these books:

https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/43889703

https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/25733505

And some of the myths you have may be dispelled :-)

sergius··on Why Rust cannot replace C++
This was a more interesting comment:

sergius··on Dali owner file petition to cap liability in Baltimore bridge collapse at $43.7M
Why rebuild a bridge? Watch this and wee at the cost for a tunnel these folks managed to make: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EruSZNI4th4
sergius··on The Apple Jonathan: A 1980s concept computer that never shipped
How about a bus that carries hi speed network and power... and everything running Plan 9 to glue it up together :-)
sergius··on No one wants simplicity
Like Perl's: Make the easy things easy, and the hard things possible.
sergius··on Close to the Machine: Technophilia and its discontents
Nothing is built on stone; all is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone.

Jorge Luis Borges

sergius··on A New GraalVM Release and New Free License
It's dead Jim...
sergius··on Stochastic gradient descent written in SQL
Did you try running it using DuckDB?
sergius··on Using Lua with C++
Use SWIG to integrate C++ into Lua: https://www.swig.org/
sergius··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
Please define 'talented' first! Any 'talented' developer can code in most languages (well there are exceptions, VB comes to my mind :-) )

There are 'experienced', 'hard working', 'team player', 'junior' (aka cheap)and even 'senior' (a developer's developer) but 'talented'?

sergius··on A practical issue with YAML: a schema is not documentation
Do not confuse the data markup with a schema DSL. In the latter the meaning of each field should be specified and available for a documentation generating tool.

Bottom line: You need a better schema definition and validation tool/framework. It is not YAML's fault.
