oh, I scrolled through these and saw so many I've used, so many years ago... nostalgia.
serbrech··on Karate: Test Automation Made Simple
Choosing java as the runtime for the framework is laughable when you want people not to care about the technology that the binary is running on. It requires you to install the java runtime, or run a bloated container, just to run the api testing. If you want the runtime to be invisible, don't ask me to install a runtime.
serbrech··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
we have a kid, and are moving, for what it's worth. If you are in the bay just because of work, and you have a kid, that means your kid is not seeing family very much due to travel restrictions and the overall covid situation. So rather than it being a blocker, it's really an extra incentive to move.
serbrech··on Simple Systems Have Less Downtime
The thinking is backwards, if you are only 10 people, there I no need to shape the system in a microservicr fashion. You just extract the pieces that need scaling. If you are 60 devs, you need to split the system so that everyone can work on it without walking on each other.
serbrech··on Managing Service-to-Service Comms in Microservices
I really dislike that all "Microservice communication" guidances encourages RPC, synchronized communication. Service Meshes make the nightmare easier to bare. It makes bad design easier to implement than good design.

It creates temporal coupling between the services that becomes really hard to manage at scale, and relies on bells and whistles from the underlying orchestrator to keep your system healthy, instead of relying on the inherent robustness of your system design.

why do you need such shortenings, can't you use the original version of all the shortening... butter? I have never seen "shortenings" in france. pastries is done with butter and that's all.
serbrech··on The Case for Portland-to-Vancouver High-Speed Rail
Trim 45 min? That would barely account for the commute to the airport in most cities. Most train stations are right in the city, as opposed to airports.

in France high speed rail between Paris and other cities has pretty much killed the local plane routes.

serbrech··on A command-line installer for Windows
Why handle windows only? This was posted recently on HN : http://gofi.sh - Fish - A systems package manager like homebrew but cross-platform
serbrech··on Getting 1Password 7 ready for the Mac App Store
I've been staying on v4.x to keep the sync to dropbox. I don't want to used their hosted service. I don't want my master password to transit over the internet and its hash to be stored in a db, no matter how secure they are. Centralizing this makes it a target of attack. There is no way a hacker will try to get my credential unless he targets me personally, and there is little to no reason for this to happen. It does exactly what I need it to do. I don't need all the fancy other additional features. :(
serbrech··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
no... 200 is correct.
serbrech··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
For Vitamin D 1IU is 0.025mcg. 8000IU = 200mcg My box of vitamin shows a Vitamin D3 content on 5mcg/pill (noted as 100% of recommended daily intake). Time to change pill I guess...
serbrech··on Show HN: Search engine for lectures
Nice! That's going to be very useful when learning a new topic/technology

How are the hits ranked? I imagine just time? Do you have a list of all sources you used?

serbrech··on Microsoft Azure in Plain English
No, I found that a bit wrong. it's more like Mesos+Marathon, or Kubernetes. It's a cluster management solution that manages your services or processes and their rolling deployments. can run on-prem on your linux or windows machines, or managed on azure with a portal. You can host any executable (or containers). And it does reverse proxy for you too.
serbrech··on Research papers in the .NET source
I don't agree. I think it's one of the strength of a large corp like MS. They are able to separate research and prototyping from product development. You don't turn a research project into a product. You learn from it and incorporate it into your products

javalovize-2.4 will, maybe, force you to love java?
serbrech··on iTerm2 version 3 beta released
Hm, by the looks of it, babun is just a preconfigured shell? In that case, I'd just hook babun into cmder. Cmder Is just a configurable shell host. I have a few types configured. Cygwin, powershell, powershell as admin, cmd, cmd as admin, and Far manager. You can have as many tabs as you want of any type of shell. Quite a different tool.
serbrech··on iTerm2 version 3 beta released
This works wonders for me : http://cmder.net
serbrech··on Blue Ocean: a new user experience for Jenkins
I like the concept or pipeline, and I like that the definition can be checked in with the code, but :

* I don't like to couple the builds to a product

* Can I run the build locally? if something goes, how to I know if it's a bug in the pipeline script, the build server environment, or my code. I want reproducible builds.

serbrech··on Show HN: PicoTorrent 0.10 released – WebSocket API included
Why not using electron on top of the api? it's not overly complicated UI anyway, and it will build on an api that other can use.
serbrech··on Plasma physicist discusses the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator
Kind of funny that it's not even listed on their news section, or anywhere about their skills. :)
serbrech··on Switch statements is broken in .NET with latest Roslyn compiler
We updated our build servers compilers to VS2015 two weeks ago. we did not link the failures to compiler errors until today. We are now in the process of reverting to VS2013 compiler, and reverting any C#6 code. We have noticed at least 2 different occurrences of this problem, just in our code base... Any switch statement on a Nullable<long> will fail. The fix is apparently coming in VS2015 Update 2.
serbrech··on Gkv – Git as a key-value store
OctopusDeploy played with this to store configurations. That was supposed to allow you to have full history with branching possibilities and a straight forward way to backups. https://github.com/paulstovell/OctoDB
serbrech··on A fast HTTP request/response parser for Common Lisp
Hmm, I can't really write lisp, but, how maintainable is this?? https://github.com/fukamachi/fast-http/blob/master/src/parse...
serbrech··on Searching 20 GB/sec: Systems Engineering Before Algorithms
Why not building on top of existing full text index/search engines? Why would I choose this over something like Kibana (http://rashidkpc.github.io/Kibana/) that provides me with all this and more, is built on top of existing capable, scalable open source products, and is itself free and open source?
serbrech··on Using Dispatch Tables to Avoid Conditionals in JavaScript
I don't see the benefit. it really is just a disguised switch statement, unless you do something more dynamic with the mapping between the command name and the function to call...
serbrech··on Users of my iOS Game Teach Me a Lesson MIT Didn’t (2011)
This reminds me of the Marshmallow challenge experiment. It turns out the best result comes from the most spontaneous and fearless groups :), using the same sort of approach as fix and repair. http://marshmallowchallenge.com
serbrech··on SeenBefore: A search engine for what you have seen before
What about using your server to run the software, but flat files as storage, I could point it to dropbox for example?
serbrech··on Leap
I agree that the lack of touch feedback is a terrible experience. But this is nevertheless an amazing piece of technology that opens new doors to a lot of applications (in the sense "apply", not software). We've seen what the community around Kinect has been able to build with much less powerful captors. I'm excited to see what people might imagine and achieve with this one. Moreover, nothing prevents you to couple this impressive captor with any other device that would provide you with other sensorial feedbacks. And why narrowing it down to a control device? Why couldn't it be used to gather other kinds of input? Monitoring activity? Assisted vision? Who knows what people have in mind for it?

there are some more advanced stuff here, still not expert though : https://github.com/Gazler/githug

would be cool to actually run githug under that website :)
