seo-speedwagon··on Tiny bright objects discovered at dawn of universe baffle scientists
Naive thought incoming:

If these old galaxies are so dense, could that help explain why their black hole is disproportionately large? With so many stars so close together, maybe they’re gravitationally interacting with each other far more, causing a lot more instability. So you have a bunch of stars knocking each other around and as a byproduct more of them get flung close enough to the center to get captured by the black hole?

seo-speedwagon··on Pentagon 'alarmingly slow' at fielding new weapons
One thing I expected to see mentioned but didn’t (or may have missed?) is the B-52. Its engine replacement project is delayed to 2033, making it a 15-year program. Much longer than it took to develop the original airplane in its entirety

seo-speedwagon··on The largest solar farm just came online in China
I'm not sure what the value of a per-capita measure is, or why it's worth making a distinction at "utility" (I'm assuming this means consumer) level.

Wouldn't the most relevant measure, at least as far as emissions go, be the ratio of energy coming from renewables / solar vs. total energy consumption? Or something similar?

edit: spelling

seo-speedwagon··on Revealed: Israeli spy chief 'threatened' ICC prosecutor over war crimes inquiry
The Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call apparently jointly collaborated on this story, and all released their articles today (modulo local timezones).

Multiple people have posted these articles today, most instances of which were flagged. The HN thread I linked above, in fact, has toggled between flagged and not-flagged at least twice already.

seo-speedwagon··on Revealed: Israeli spy chief 'threatened' ICC prosecutor over war crimes inquiry
Leaving aside your despicable call for genocide, the threats and harassment by Israel, as described in this article, started in 2015.
seo-speedwagon··on Revealed: Israeli spy chief 'threatened' ICC prosecutor over war crimes inquiry
The counterpart +972 Magazine article, which goes into more details on the communications interception side of this, was posted earlier as well. The articles are complementary, IMO

seo-speedwagon··on Surveillance and interference: Israel's covert war on the ICC
> The intelligence was also used by the Israeli military to retroactively open investigations into incidents that were of interest to the ICC, to try to prove that Israel’s legal system is capable of holding its own to account.

This alone is an extremely noteworthy revelation. The ICC has a principle of “complementarity” where it will defer to local prosecutors, if they’re robust and vigorous in prosecuting crimes. This severly undermines the Israeli narrative that they have such a system.

seo-speedwagon··on ICJ orders Israel to stop military operation in Rafah
Genuine response: the “wider positions on the nature of the I/P conflict” are essential to informing the situation, and cannot be divorced from the discussion.

Israel has no ethical response because there is no ethical means by which one can maintain apartheid. History did not start on Oct 7, 2023. It’s like pondering where the line is between legitimate and illegitimate responses to the Warsaw ghetto uprising, or to Haitian revolution.

seo-speedwagon··on California pays meth users up to $599 a year to get sober
Dunno I can’t speak for the program, but it makes sense to me, the way the people the article interviewed talked. $10 or $11 for a week of being clean isn’t going to do much for anyone who doesn’t want to get sober but can be a big deal for those who do.

Without getting into too much detail, this is a road I’ve been down too, tho not with either meth or AA. I think the biggest thing is, sobriety is usually about rearranging your entire life. For most addicts, a huge part, usually a majority, of your life and mental space is ensuring you’ll get your next drink/hit/whatever. Then when you try and quit you suddenly have this void where all the time you spent feeding your addiction, you just have nothing. It’s why so many programs like AA and rehab spend so much time giving alternative structures, until you can stand on your own and organize your own life. That’s why the guy saying that $11 each week kept him going rang really true to me.

As for cost, like every study ever conducted shows the costs of diversion is vastly less than the material and social costs of incarceration. Think about it, for an entire year of peeing clean, the state gives this person $600-ish. Googling tells me that’s about the cost of 2 days incarceration in CA.

edit: there’s some other points I didn’t really address. You can’t really stop someone from falling off the wagon and going on a very dangerous bender, short of actual incarceration (your old tolerance is lower now but you have the same habits so you can easily OD; sadly it’s not uncommon). But that’s not really the most helpful way to think about it. For the people who are trying to use this program to get clean, being treated like an adult and having the ability to structure payments how it works best for you is a good thing. It’s baby steps into self-management and planning.

seo-speedwagon··on California pays meth users up to $599 a year to get sober
It’s kind of like you’re asking why people in AA like getting their 5 year chip. Having an external “thing”, even if it’s of token monetary value, can be a huge motivation to keeping clean. It helps give focus and grounding and makes you feel like you’re working towards something in what can otherwise be a very long and lonely path to sobriety.
seo-speedwagon··on Cyber Security: A pre-war reality check
Everyone has outsourced all their cheap and low-quality manufacturing to China, therefore China is only capable of manufacturing cheap, low quality items. Is this your argument?
seo-speedwagon··on Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
The US military itself reports it’s experiencing a severe recruitment shortage.
seo-speedwagon··on The microservices craze was perhaps the purest example of a ZIRP
If you take microservices to mean more isolated and lightweight runtimes and moving away from “single bigass server”, then disagree. I remember multihour deployments where each team would have to stage and coordinate their rollouts with each other and it sucked, no one liked it.

If you mean how Uber famously had like 8000 microservices, more than 1 for each engineer, then sure. But it’s mixing up cause and effect. Aligning deployment boundaries with domain boundaries is, all things equal, a good idea. ZIRP-gorged unicorns would have found makework one way or another.

seo-speedwagon··on US set to impose 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicle imports
In the US, average transaction price for new cars is a bit north of $47k, and the average loan duration something like 67 months. It’s no wonder the US is throwing up anti-competitive protectionist policies.

seo-speedwagon··on US set to impose 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicle imports

seo-speedwagon··on Iran quickens path towards the atomic bomb
I don't understand how someone would take any chance to live in a world where a terrorist nation run by religious fanatics have the nuclear bomb.

This is an extremely apt description of Israel and the US though?

Nonproliferation is pretty much failed though. Iran complied with some of the most onerous and invasive inspections of its nuclear program for years, and the US still unilaterally withdrew from the agreements and demonized them. So what is the benefit of complying at all?

seo-speedwagon··on [dead]
Iran's attack came more than six months after Hamas terrorists invaded Israel on Oct. 7, after which the Israeli military began its bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Yes Oct 7 is definitely the most recent, relevant event before Iran’s strikes on Israel.

seo-speedwagon··on 99% of Iran's 300 missiles and drones intercepted
Crowing about interception rates misses the point. This was Iran’s targeted retaliation to the 1 April embassy bombing. And now there’s reports that Biden is planning a “diplomatic” (not military) response, and will not help Israel attack Iran. The whole settler-colonist thing depends on regional domination to ensure and reassure your settlers that they are safe. It doesn’t look like that’s the case to me.

And don’t forget Iran also captured an Israeli-owned ship, reinforcing that they indeed can project power in the Strait of Hormuz. Overall seems like, if anything, a strategic defeat revealing how exposed Israel is.

seo-speedwagon··on Iran said to begin attack on Israel, launching drones
I remember hearing almost exactly the same weak excuses when Israel bombed the Church of Saint Porphyrius. “Well actually it was the building right next to it (that is exclusively used by it)”. It’s not fooling anyone.
seo-speedwagon··on Iran said to begin attack on Israel, launching drones
What’s impressive about bombing an embassy? Like, pick a random embassy in a random country and bomb it, you’ll kill a bunch of people.
seo-speedwagon··on How Did American Capitalism Mutate into American Corporatism?
I was indeed being sarcastic. I found it pretty galling that this guy claimed no one is speaking to these things when, as you pointed out, there is a massive body of theory dating back over 150 years that addresses these things with diligence and scholarly rigor.

You did much better than me by actually providing some references!

seo-speedwagon··on How Did American Capitalism Mutate into American Corporatism?
This is also why neither the left nor the right, nor Democrats or Republicans, nor capitalists or socialists, seem to be speaking clearly to the moment in which we live. [...]

I truly wish these companies were genuinely private, but they are not. They are de facto state actors. More precisely, they all work hand-in-glove and which is the hand and which is the glove is no longer clear.

Epoch Times guy is really onto something here. It's crazy that there's no existing body of literature that explores how the ways in which a society's productive forces and relations (its "base", if you will) interacts with its other institutions like government, media, etc. (its "superstructure", if you will). But here we are. He's the lone Cassandra, his desperate cries falling upon deaf ears.
