senectus1··on AI is not a normal technology
sorry, while I'm no proponent of AI... you cant make this claim with anything more than "feels"

how can you be so sure that AI cant improve to a level where it has original thoughts, Creativity and imagination.

remember that our input is limited to our sensor capability. AI has an unlimited ability to add more sensors and as a consequence collect input that we are not aware of, then whats stopping it training on information we dont have access to?

you cant. no one can. we haven't maxed out this technology or the amount of compute we can throw at it yet. (we may have maxed out the economic viability of it though... I think we'll find out in the next 12-18 months.)

senectus1··on Eating Fruit Skins
I'd like to see the the cited source for that statement.. I've always eaten the skins of kiwi fruit. its offers a nice tangy counterpoint to the sweet flesh. Eating it without the skin just sounds boring.
senectus1··on Thelio Mira AI Linux Workstation: 192 GB GPU Memory
wouldnt you be better off maxing out the new Mac hardware? the memory bandwidth is insane on those jobbies
senectus1··on Samsung Debuts zHBM Prototype, Stacking Memory Directly on AI Accelerators
if all thats true, this is some impressive specs.
senectus1··on I'm sorry, you're not going to die from an AI-engineered supervirus
I dont 100% agree.

I agree an AI isnt going to create one. but the number of raving loons out there that think 5G chips are in vaccines are going to go absolutely stark raving mad the next time there is a pandemic.

then they'll be super susceptible to AI generated political adverts from the next fuckwit political hack trying to get into power.

looking at how the world is panning out atm moment... I expect AI to have a massive influence on the sort of idiots that will get voted into power and make decisions that will get a vast number of us killed. by all sorts of means... war, famine, unregulated corporate poisoning...

AI is going to get us killed, because we'll use it to kill ourselves.

senectus1··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
I... jeepers. I dont think i have enough friends for a 4 person LAN party in my adult life.

nerd life seems to get lonelier the older you get.

senectus1··on Jellyfin 12.0
really is just the normies access to it via samsung and LG TV's that hold me back.
senectus1··on Nvidia's Jensen Huang says 'AGI has arrived' and congratulates OpenAI
doing so well that they need to slow down down..

https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-chief-scientist-ai-ri...

At this stage, it feels like OpenAI and nvidia is openly negging and lovebombing OpenAI to ensure the public is in a constant state of uncertainly, thus ensuring paralysis in democracy while still going hell for leather in the background.

I suspect their intent is to ensure they're the last man standing.

senectus1··on An Alien Mind
yup, and their best mate (who has no financial incentive at all!!) agree's they have peaked.

https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-jensen-huang-agi-open...

rediculous.

senectus1··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
AI is a tool. the use of this tool to deliver something unrelated is... unrelated
senectus1··on Scientists Find Worms in Almost Every Fish in a Tuna Haul – 96% Were Infected
>Additionally, I've never seen worms in bottom-feeding fish like catfish and carp.

no just the heavy metals you can see...

senectus1··on How I turned Granola action items into to-do list
yeah i only knew because i had to configure a once of deployment of 15 machines for a leadership planning day last week.

otherwise i would never have clicked the link.

senectus1··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
i predict this will get reversed. money speaks and valve is the carrot leading the money donkey
senectus1··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
yeah, that seems obvious by now.
senectus1··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
being dodgy is hard work. it takes effort to maintain and the longer you maintain it the cumulatively harder it is to get away with.
senectus1··on Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush
the hair dryers i appreciate, they seem to be quieter yet not less effective. I appreciate that drop in Db quite a lot.
senectus1··on Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush
i find the inconsistent advice from "Dentists" very discouraging.

just like midwives they all seem to have their own opinions that dont equate to scientifically researched advice, yet are presented in a way that if you;re not paying attention will be taken as such.

senectus1··on Flock CEO's Address Spread Online as Surveillance Backlash Explodes
this house? https://www.zumper.com/address/2588-winslow-dr-ne-atlanta-ga...
senectus1··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
in the age of LLM's this is all too common.

"look at what i can do with the assistance of an LLM"

shows an rube goldberg construction sure it works. but geez support and security is a nightmare.

senectus1··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
this is one reason I haven't replaced my aging eufy stuff.

next round of outdoor cams and doorbells are going to be wholly selfhosted.

if they live for another 9 months I'll have the budget for it.

senectus1··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
except that all three things are getting a lot of social media clout.

they just keep pumping out short form videos or yapping heads talking about how they use x to do y better than any of the old stuff...

I think this is the OP's point. they all exist because there is a lot of noise about them existing and being used.

senectus1··on Show HN: Sesame - a local-first, open-source password manager
you got to pay 10 euro a year to self host?
senectus1··on My Business Is Dying
hell yes.

I hit this wall about 2-3 years ago at least...

senectus1··on Small Models Have Arrived
not sure how this is really about model size.

I'm keenly interested in seeing super small (like 10's or 100's of mb) special purpose models starting to come into their own.

that might actually be transformational globally not just in rich countries.

senectus1··on Ask HN: What is one simple thing LLMs are insanely bad at?
providing value for the actual cost (not the price we're being charged atm, the actual cost)
senectus1··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
lol i think the CIA is nowhere near competent enough to even consider that idea.
senectus1··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
its not you the tech bros are selling it to. its fascist politicians.
senectus1··on Australia passes law to levy tech giants that fail to pay for local news
and when meta starts a local news station that just does what it did before it had a local news station?
senectus1··on Error by AI scribe during medical appointment leaves patient devastated
the fact that humans can say "I dont know" is a super power.

AI will too often not say "I dont know" and just make shit up instead.

senectus1··on Error by AI scribe during medical appointment leaves patient devastated
garbage in, garbage out.

but with AI you get to add "hallucinations" to the mix.
