sendfoods··on One of France's oldest butter producers makes 380 tons per year [video]
Eater has been releasing some incredible food-related mini-documentaries! This one is great, too. Gotta get my hands on some of this butter
sendfoods··on TSMC to make 4nm chips in Arizona for Apple, AMD, Nvidia
I think it cannot be understated how important this may be in the future, given the geopolitical situation btw the US/EU, China and Taiwan.
sendfoods··on Firefox Translations: Translate websites in your browser without using the cloud
ah, thanks!
sendfoods··on Firefox Translations: Translate websites in your browser without using the cloud
> Translate websites

Just installed it, but how does it translate "websites"? The description states that is translates text input, entered manually. What am I missing?

sendfoods··on German privacy watchdogs conclude that Microsoft 365 is incompatible with GDPR
At this points, isn't it pretty safe to assume very few Silicon Valley services conform to GDPR?

Another example was shared recently: Shopify is technically illegal in Germany [1]

sendfoods··on Stable Diffusion 2.0
Not sure about your last claim. The example given in the blog post looks very very close to a natural image.
sendfoods··on Oh, the Places Your Apple ID Will Go
Could not have expressed my thoughts more clearly.
sendfoods··on The truffle industry is a scam
me neither, but I can attest to the massive difference between flash freezing and freezing from other foods. I would assume the same holds true here, as well: significantly less cell damage during flash freezing, preserving more or original flavor and texture.
sendfoods··on Tell HN: The German job market is crashing
Had an interview a couple weeks ago which, unfortunately, didn't work out. Will do.
sendfoods··on Tell HN: The German job market is crashing
This is very, very disheartening. Finishing my degree in exactly 2 weeks.
sendfoods··on Making a Go program faster with a one-character change
1 character, in 2 places ;) I did not know profiling support for go was so seamless, thank you!

May I ask, is that theme custom or available somewhere? I really enjoyed it

sendfoods··on Gender pay gap closing among German board members: men are slowly catching up
I honestly think it's a translation error.
sendfoods··on Gender pay gap closing among German board members: men are slowly catching up
which lie?
sendfoods··on Gender pay gap closing among German board members: men are slowly catching up
Why is this flagged @ HN? The title could use some cleanup, should be "board members", not CEO
sendfoods··on Which face is real?
This was surprisingly easy when looking out for artifacts. StyleGAN2 significantly reduces artifacts, i'd be very interested to see StyleGAN2 on this website as well!
sendfoods··on Z-Library eBook site domains seized by U.S. Dept of Justice
care to name any in particular?
sendfoods··on Cameras abandoned 85 years ago by photography pioneer found on glacier
Visually, "The Sanctity of Space" [0], starring huge amounts of Washburns archival footage, was absolutely stunning. As a movie, I found it to be a bit too long winded

sendfoods··on How I make a living working on SerenityOS
Congratulations. I have only listened to your awesome programming sessions once or twice, and did find them very enjoyable!

On an unrelated note, regarding your setup: which theme are you using in CLion? Thanks!

sendfoods··on Saturated fat: villain and bogeyman in development of cardiovascular disease?
- disclaimer: I am no health expert -

Still, personally, the North Korelia Project [1] and the public debates/podcasts with its author(s) convinces me of the link

sendfoods··on Privacy vs. “I have nothing to hide” (2019)
It does, either via AuroraStore (complete Google Play Store replacement without google account) or Sandboxed Google Play [1]. My banking apps works, and everything else I can think of.

Hard to say what a "normal" level of tinkering is with Android, as I have switched directly from iOS to Graphene and have never used Stock Android. I am sure some things are a little bit more cumbersome, but for me the tradeoff is worth it.

Also the stock g-cam (with internet access disabled) and g-photos (with internet access disabled) make a pretty amazing photo and photo editing experience.

Have you thought about GrapheneOS? Pixel hardware, No Google, but android app compatibility?

I agree strongly with the point made about bias of vegetarian researchers working on studies showing the benefits of vegan/vegetarian diets. Still, as someone who eats smaller amounts of meat than the average Westerner, I found large parts of the article frustrating and disingenuous.

> We’ve been eating meat since before we became humans. Meat contributed, it’s thought, by anthropologists, to our becoming humans from these little subhumans who had smaller brains, but when they found the ability to hunt other critters, and eat the meat, that provided the nutrients that allowed us to evolve into human beings

As far as I understand, this is only partly true? Newest evidence suggests that cooking foods made at least as large of a difference than meat. [1]

In general, the article makes it sounds like the WHO recommends the consumption of 0% meat, which isn't true. The WHO recommends a drastic reduction of processed meat consumption and modest reduction of unprocessed meat consumption in the western hemisphere, essentially. The different inflammatory Omega-6 content in wild vs farmed animals surely play a role in this recommendation.

This argument essentially is "It's from mother nature, so it must be good" - really?

> Discusses various problems with getting enough complete protein and micronutrients from plant foods

Vegans and vegetarians get adequate amounts of protein [2] and micronutrients [3], which each population group (omni, vegetarian, vegan) needing to keep different micronutrients on their checklist. If you don't believe in these studies, there are multiple vegetarian and almost vegan historical and current societies on this planet.

sendfoods··on Air pollution cancer breakthrough will rewrite the rules
> fasting and CR [calorie restriction] are the most potent non-genetic autophagy stimulators, and lack the undesirable side effects associated with alternative interventions.

> We conclude that both fasting and CR have a role in the upregulation of autophagy, the evidence overwhelmingly suggesting that autophagy is induced in a wide variety of tissues and organs in response to food deprivation

sendfoods··on Air pollution cancer breakthrough will rewrite the rules
I am sure fasting proponents promise way too many things, but the underlying cell cleanup mechanism [0] is very real and received the Nobel Prize in 2016 [1]

sendfoods··on Korea shatters its own record for world’s lowest fertility rate
What has changed since your grandparents generation? Where did this (need for?) competitiveness come from?
sendfoods··on I regret my website redesign
any details on how Tiny Pilot KVM works technically? As far as I understand, it's pretty hands-off. No configuring ports or ssh keys.
sendfoods··on Renewables remain cheapest, but cost reductions on hold
* Does this study only look at generation costs? What about storage costs?

* Does this study look at the fact that the "traditional" grid and energy production technologies will always be necessary, because renewable energy production can drop to zero? This is what increases energy prices in countries that have both renewable and fossil fuel energy production. You are paying for two grids, so to speak
