selectout··on Benefits matter, or why I won't work for your Y Combinator startup
Not me personally but an engineer at my current startup is taking 5 weeks off but the typical "Unlimited Vacation" also mentions as long as you get your work done. So they will be taking 5 weeks off traveling the world, but they are still getting work done (not the typical hours by any means, but getting what needs to be done accomplished).
selectout··on Zuck, Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey In Short Film To Inspire Kids To Learn How To Code
Loved seeing them bring in celebrities outside of the tech world to share their experiences/passions for code.

Chris Bosh was a complete surprise to me but made me like him even more.

selectout··on As of today, App.net is a freemium service
Joining in the crowd...anyone else have an invite? calvin [at] selectout.org
selectout··on How LinkedIn Just Made Ten Million People Feel Special
I got this email (as did millions of others) but the real surprise is that it doesn't mean much to make that by actual profile views. Thinking back I don't remember a month where I had more than maybe 100 people view my profile, average month was probably around 50-60. If you think about it, most people get that probably weekly on facebook and daily on twitter.
selectout··on Jawbone buys Visera and MassiveHealth
Congrats to Aza Raskin. A brilliant designer/visionary that has truly helped shape a lot of what we love today. Can't wait to see what he can bring to the table at Jawbone.
selectout··on Google-flavored Bootstrap theme
So...regular bootstrap but "flat" buttons? I like it, but it seems they just copied everything over including the "Built with Bootstrap" examples even though those are bootstrap and not Google Bootstrap. Even the "examples" are regular bootstrap.

Really just a bit different colors and making the buttons flat is all that is changed yet they have the entire site/examples.

selectout··on OpenTable Acquires FoodSpotting for $10 Million
instagram sold for a billion.
selectout··on A note from Keith
Sad to see things like this happen, but I can't wait to see what he is able to come up with and bring to the world next. He has done amazing jobs in his previous roles and I am excited to see what he brings next from the PayPal Mafia.
selectout··on Show HN: Playbook - Share your hookups with your bros (at PennApps)
I think if you have something that is "Show HN" there should be more to see than just a landing page. I'd like to see how you built it, what it looks like, something more than just "enter your email address and we'll notify you when it's available."
selectout··on Why Is Google Fiber the Country’s Only Super-Speed Internet?
what provider and area if you don't mind me asking?

I'm stuck with around 15/10 for $60 sadly.

selectout··on Tubes.io is a hosted scraping and web automation platform
As much as I think there needs to be a service like this, I am not sure I support it with their Rotating IP's point. I mean if a website or company wants to block you for scraping content I think that should be there right. It also makes me tend to believe this site doesn't follow the robots.txt agreement as they are advertising themselves as getting by any website access blocks.
selectout··on Ask HN: How many hours do hackers sleep?
Weekdays between 5.5-7 hours per night

Weekends around 8-9 hours per night.

selectout··on Google Maps for iOS
I hope this get's more use than the "Open in Chrome" button does. Both are awesome, my only gripe with iOS 6 is not being able to set default apps for browser, email, and maps. (coincidentally I'd switch them all to Google or google owned items)
selectout··on Google Maps for iOS
Voice Navigation and turn by turn!

Now to see about offline access.

selectout··on Can websites personally identify visitors?
Quick privacy scan of their homepage only shows scripts being launched from 6 different companies and tracking cookies from optimizely and themself. (along with google analytics).

This actually has fewer than the average for tracking cookies placed on a homepage yet they are able to uniquely identify you. Privacy isn't gone on the web, but it is getting harder by the day. Some data can be passed outside of cookies and just through loading the scripts, but in general this site seems to be much ahead of average. (~10 unique domained scripts and ~7 unique domained cookies).

selectout··on The Best Replacements for Privacy-Invading Services
Some of these are genuinely good alternatives but the headline is a bit too attention grabbing. A lot of these "privacy-invading" services are free (and offer more for free) than the non "privacy-invading" alternatives. If you aren't paying for it, you are probably the product holds very true.

For most people I have found that getting something a bit better for free is worth giving up on a bit of their privacy. I do believe however that privacy education and providing the details outside of a long ass privacy policy is very key moving forward.

selectout··on Apple’s Wireless-Charging Patent Might Actually Free Us From Wires
Looks to be competition with http://www.uBeam.com should be an interesting space over the coming years.
selectout··on YC Rejection Emails Are Out
8 video views, 0 questions, solo founder rejected.
selectout··on Chartio (YC S10) Improves The Way You Visualize Your Data
This looks amazing. Absolutely great work.

Seems to be tailored more towards angel funded and higher companies, but I plan to take advantage of the free month best I can for my project.

selectout··on Mastermind: A Dashboard for your Metrics
Love this idea, wish it was open sourced so I could run this locally/modify it more to my personal needs.

Still a very cool and unique way for companies to get their custom data into a dashboard, great implementation.

One error is that when adding a widget, it doesn't allow you to easily highlight the "Make Post Requests To" url. Maybe change it so it doesn't show a circle with line through it.

selectout··on Show HN: Create Your Own Obama Hope Poster
Absolutely amazing foreground/background selector.

As for the app itself, I'd love it if in the photo selection page it allowed for uploading the photo (I was expecting it to show profile pics but didn't, so I uploaded a photo instead).

selectout··on Show HN: I built an app to find words in Letterpress
Haha, great little app. For the benefit of the 'cheaters' out there that use this I would recommend adding it so that it shows maybe 10 of the longest words and options to view more, then 10 of maybe 5-7 letters long, then 25 of the sub 5 letter words. That way people can easier pick believable words instead of unbelievable words like "whirlybirds" or 'discursively'. Maybe that's just me though.

With that said...don't cheat.

selectout··on Moot.it: Forums and commenting re-imagined
My guess is they are cookie-ing browsers and doing data collection/retargeting.
selectout··on Steve Jobs testing Photo Booth in 2005
It's cool to see him acting like everyone else when they first tried it. Sticking his tongue out and making silly faces. I don't know about others but I often get caught up in Steve Jobs: The Legend rather than the man.
selectout··on Google privacy policy rethink demanded by EU
From an innovation standpoint having the single privacy policy is much better for Google and end users, but when it comes to privacy itself it lacks. Not a huge lacking when combining them together but nonetheless I'd rather not have my personal web searches and professional email sending the data to be used in conjunction.
selectout··on Syte: Simple but powerful packaged personal site
He's going for a similar style as Svbtle(.com) where each person that blogs has their own identity that corresponds to a color/image so they can easily be cataloged and seen.
selectout··on Get notified when a periodic task doesn't run
I agree with this. Awesome service that you probably could scale up with properly with larger corporations while keeping the smaller individual projects/startups that use 3-10 tasks at lower costs or even free.

I know I could use this for 3 things on my own, but would probably rather just build it myself than pay $19/month. (although that is definitely more than reasonable if I wasn't using this for just independent projects)

selectout··on Amazon’s Silk Browser tracks users' visited URLs
The real key to look at here is whether or not they are associating your visited URLs with your amazon account (or whatever account you need to be logged into. not a Kindle owner).

They mention they don't collect PII which doesn't mean it isn't being associated to PII though.

selectout··on Show HN: Mixest, my summer project that crawls the web for new indie music
I am absolutely loving this. Any chance of more permanent accounts though? Local storage/cookies are something I go through quite often, plus I'd love to be able to go back to songs at a friend's house or party and play some of these.
selectout··on Microsoft updates their Terms of Service to an easily readable Q&A format
Great step forward but if it is still over 50,000 words then there needs to be a new way of doing this.
