seivan··on Rage Against the Finite-State Machines
I've stopped using FSM for Behaviour Trees instead. Though not related to the problems here, it just makes it easier to design and reason about. Not to mention more decoupled and thus reusable.
seivan··on Chinese state media discourages April Fools' Day
I noticed this as well but never thought more of it. You're absolutely right. Could be because China doesn't play the "diversity" game and values meriotcracy with Confucius values (Like LKYs Singapore). That doesn't sit well with the SF crowd here. Especially the mods and the Guardian loving faux mod.
seivan··on Why Tech Professionals Now Share a Fate with the Working Class
You never stop to think that you can be pro workers right and still against unions? I don't want whole businesses pretending they're for workers right. The cost of union is resources that could be spent on workers themselves.

You need to look into the millions union repa spent on themselves. Read up on recent scandals in Sweden for instance.

I generally don't tolerate admin-work, so I might be connecting here.

seivan··on Agility Requires Safety
Haha, I thought it needed more discipline to keep working coder as I keep renaming and rewriting.
seivan··on Erdogan’s Attempt to Suppress German Satire Has the Opposite Effect
How can you be a leader of a country and not be aware of the Streisand effect or whatever it's called in Turkey related to whoever try to pull those stunts last time.
seivan··on Agility Requires Safety
No risk, no experiments, no innovation and getting caught in a rut of mediocrity and boredom.

I love experimenting and taking chances with code and ideas. Yeah you end up spending more nights and it might take more time or it might blow up in your face but what's the point of being a programmer if you can't push limits.

seivan··on For anyone who has been turned down by 38 companies
I went out of my comfort zone recently, it helps and you won't end up working at cost-centers/body shops aka ad-agencies and "consultant firms"
seivan··on Moving Beyond the OOP Obsession
Routing? I'm just saying that OOP is as much of a perfect fit to GUI that Entity Component Systems (composition) are.
seivan··on Moving Beyond the OOP Obsession
No, the name of the game is composition. See ECS in game dev.
seivan··on Moving Beyond the OOP Obsession
Are you saying all these outlets (labels, text box, buttons) are inheriting from a base FormObject that can be rendered?

That would work without OOP. Make a FormRender component that manages that logic (being rendered in a form) and other components, one that manages a keyboard, other that can be clicked and handle hover, touch states, etc.

seivan··on Comprehensions in Python the Jedi way
Sorta like signals using RxJS/RxSwift.
seivan··on Wrestling With Inclusion at LambdaConf
People have expanded the definitions to mean all sorts of bullshit to fit their agenda. You're expecting us to take your definitions at face value, that's laughable.
seivan··on Why Anti-Authoritarians Are Diagnosed as Mentally Ill (2012)
Same experience here. Programming was boring in high school. More fun before and after.
seivan··on The Immobile Masses: Why Traffic Is Awful and Public Transit Is Worse
That's interesting, how do you explain Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan? Lower taxes but better public transport?
seivan··on Wrestling With Inclusion at LambdaConf
Also know as eating your own. Just wait, there's always someone slipping on narrative.
seivan··on Wrestling With Inclusion at LambdaConf
I'm always wary when people call someone racist/fascist. I'd like to see some definitive proof otherwise you're just labeling him without providing anything to backup your claims. Isn't that essentially just hearsay and libel?

Just to clear any ambiguity, I don't accept the modern definition where you can call someone racist because you don't like their writings in sensitive topic. I'd like to see some hard evidence where said person has actively discriminated against someone with different racial background.

seivan··on Wrestling With Inclusion at LambdaConf
Nothing rattles the "diversity" warriors cages than acceptance of diverse thoughts. From my experience, all notions of acceptance and diversity goes out the window when you disagree or have a different political opinion with said warriors. It's a good way to dehumanize us for having the wrong thought.

"It's okay, you can kick him, he thinks X, Y, Z so he's practically Hitler"

seivan··on That awkward moment when Apple mocked good hardware and poor people
Clickbait. Pure and simple. I felt the same way when my parents used PCs until I got them iOS devices.
seivan··on ReSwift 1.0.0: Unidirectional Data Flow in Swift
I wrote a pub sub that I use like this. Not sure I need everything else. Dispatching strings (enums) works as a charm. https://github.com/seivan/NotificationHub
seivan··on Swift 2.2 Released
Happy about renaming typealias to associatedtype, now I don't have to constantly explain why I am using typealiasis when dealing with bugs.
seivan··on Simple coroutines for games in C++
Behaviour Tree's would be easier to model and write with existing libraries that implement the decorators (wait for, etc)
seivan··on Detecting heart arrhythmias using machine learning and Apple Watch data
I'm hoping with these gadgets at some point we'll have enough data tracked to do meaningful analytics, if not just on yourself but across a lot of voluntarily uploaded data. Not a big deal with a heartbeat every 10 minutes right now, But 5-10 years from now that would at minimum be very cool.
seivan··on Type hints – a mediocre programmer's reaction (2015)
I've come to realize it's an addiction/urge, that's the only /reasonable/ answer I can give.
seivan··on Type hints – a mediocre programmer's reaction (2015)
Couldn't they use helper methods to convert all those types he brought up to a single common type that they annotated with? It would simplify the API a lot. I come from a full day of working with associated types, generics, type erasures and protocol extensions, there is a darker side to it.

I wanted to have a generic protocol that could have some logic of its own without enforcing you to subclass it. I would regret the decision so much, if I wasn't busy regretting other decisions even more.

Just enforce a type that you accept that's large enough to be used by many and convertable from other common types you want to use.

I swear, soon they'll classify programmers urge to write as generic and extendable as a mental illness.

seivan··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Thanks! Yeah it's hard to find good UP TO DATE reading material on this. I genuinely appreciate this.
seivan··on Google Puts Boston Dynamics Up for Sale in Robotics Retreat
A self writing behavior tree that uses behavior to write new behavior based on past behaviors. Sounds human enough to become an addict of some sorts. :-).
seivan··on Venezuela to Shut Down for a Week to Cope With Electricity Crisis
One thing that usually follows is the lack of consequences for bad decisions.

I've noticed shareholders are more aligned with letting heads roll than politicians and voters unless it hits extremes. Most corporations would nip it in the bud early or die trying.

seivan··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
Care to share your webpack config for getting React and TypeScript to play ball? I'm collecting a bunch to try to figure out what works best.
seivan··on PlayStation VR Will Arrive in October for $399
I think Wii is to blame. We were tricked into believing what would be full featured motions ended up just being wiggling your wrist instead of your thumbs. I'm hopeful though.
seivan··on Google Cloud Dev Advocate Jailed at SXSW
The threshold for ruining people's lives in general needs to be higher than hearsay. But we're often quick to disregard that when it fits our own world view or hits closer to home.
