Symphony was marketed by Goldman Sachs and Blackrock as a $15 Bloomberg killer, but still has not gained much traction. Bloomberg provides real-time data feeds, analysis tools, real-time secure communication with other traders, news and entertainment. When you are looking after AUMs of tens or hundreds of billions, $24,000 a year for a Bloomberg subscription is negligible.

"Potential users don’t want to get onboard unless all the other people in their ecosystem are on the service. That dynamic obviously keeps most people from joining Symphony. Most everyone working in financial markets is already on Bloomberg, and it would take virtually everyone leaving at the same time to give Symphony critical mass.

“I think Facebook is the best comparison,” Ayzerov says. “If Facebook had only one fourth of your friends, you wouldn’t use it. The advantage of Bloomberg is that every financial person has it.”"

As a side note, in some poor, largely rural countries, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in insecticides are the most popular suicide agents.

You are right, it is "Le Monde" and not "La Monde" as I originally wrote.

As you can see, the materials I have used ( Clozemaster and Assimil ) are not too grammar heavy. :-)

I finished the Duolingo French tree. I now use Clozemaster for French ( and a number of other languages ) and find that it is a very efficient and entertaining way of studying French in context. I can now slowly and not too painfully, read some easy authentic French material, including parts of Le Monde and the French version of ZDNet. I have of course, used a bunch of other resources, including the excellent Assimil.

Thank you for you post, and for your fine book on algorithms.

"The Cleveland Clinic also offers “Energy Medicine” therapy, described as “practices [that] are based on the premise that by promoting balance and flow in the body’s electromagnetic and subtle energies, health and well-being are improved.” Among the conditions this supposedly treats, the hospital lists multiple sclerosis and hormone imbalances. Similarly, its Center for Integrative Medicine touts the benefits of reiki, a “hands-on natural healing” technique that redirects “universal life force energy.” According to the Cleveland Clinic, those benefits include enhancing the immune system and improved tissue healing, and its practitioners treat patients with cancer, Parkinson’s disease and other serious illnesses.

....I am all too aware of how frightening, exhausting, stressful and dispiriting illness and hospitalization can be. I am broadly in favor of hospitals offering a wide range of psychological, emotional and spiritual supports. Though I do not subscribe to it myself, if reiki helps patients cope with being sick, I’m not categorically opposed to it, any more than I would be opposed to a visit from a chaplain or counselor.

But it crosses an extremely important, bright line to call that kind of service “medicine,” or to ascribe a set of therapeutic benefits to it. Describing the manipulation of energy fields as a kind of treatment moves from evidence-based medicine into the realm of faith healing."

If you are at Vellore (VIT appears to be Vellore Institute of Technology ), there is a world class medical institution in your town (CMC Vellore )that sends many of their graduates around the world to places like the Mayo Clinic and MGH.

They have a well regarded neurophysiology lab that was run by Marcus Devanandan. Perhaps you could do research / collaborate with them.

All of them work. Over the years, I have used ( in reverse chronological order ) Mint, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, Suse, Mandrake, Slackware and Yggdrasil.

They were all satisfactory.

"This is something you need to fix, or it'll stay completely painful forever. It's hard work and takes years, but here at Intel we pulled it off. We can upstream everything from a _very_ early stage (can't tell you how early). And we have full marketing approval for that. If you watch the i915 commit stream you can see how our code is chasing updates from the hw engineers debugging things. Daniel Vetter Software Engineer, Intel Corporation"

I am trying to learn Finnish and I have found that the colloquial, literary and poetic registers of Finnish are poorly translated.

"There is more to the transfer of capital than what is generally written. It is believed that Tughluq wanted to make Daulatabad an Islamic cultural centre, thereby helping him to have better control over the region, reducing the number of "Hindu" rebellions. His efforts to bring Ulema and Shaikhs from provincial towns and make them settle down in that city give a clue to his true intentions. The view of Muhammad Tughluq was that something like the above had to be done in the Deccan to strengthen the Muslim position in that area.

As regards its remote effects, the Deccan experiment of Muhammad Tughluq was a remarkable success. The boundaries which had separated the North from the South broke down. It is true that the extension of the administrative power of the Delhi Sultanate into the Deccan failed, but so far as the extension of the cultural institutions was concerned, it was successful."

This story is a testament to the poor quality of current journalism.
