seesaw··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
It is amazing Asimov saw the need for the three laws of robotics well before the LLMs and the current AI
seesaw··on How will OpenAI compete?
I have been using duckduckgo for a long time.
seesaw··on Show HN: I built a dashboard to compare mortgage rates across 120 credit unions
I have had bank accounts only with credit unions for the last 20 years. I have never found a need to open an account with one of the big banks. That said, people look at me like I’m crazy when I mention this.
seesaw··on A.I. and Social Media Contribute to 'Brain Rot'
I am in the same boat. I think I will get a lot more of time back if they kill old
seesaw··on 1X Neo – Home Robot - Pre Order
Can a robot follow your instructions ? When you come back from your walk, can you shout from outside to have it open the door ? Can you also shout from outside to have it pack up the valuables and hand it over to you ?
seesaw··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
I had been a customer of Amazon for almost 20 years. I had Prime since day one. For me the breaking point was when they increased the fee and then decided to have ads for Prime Video. I sold the few Amazon stocks I had, and canceled Prime.

I found after I canceled Prime, my Amazon spending significantly went down. Sometimes I will add something to the cart, look at the shipping fee, and decide to abandon the cart. Canceling Prime made me realize I was ordering a lot of junk I didn’t need.

seesaw··on iPhone Air
I switched from Apple Watch to a Garmin Venu. The battery lasts for a week, and many of the sensors are more accurate.
seesaw··on California homeowners to fund half of high-risk insurer's $1B 'bailout'
As an example, my power is generated by one company and distributed by PG&E. I pay $57 for power generation and $140 or so for distribution. PG&E reported close to [1] $2.5B profits for last year. My bills have been going up for $50/month to over $400/month in the last four years.

seesaw··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
I had been an Apple Watch user until it died after I was in a water park. It is supposed to be waterproof, but I guess Apple wants me to refresh after two years.

I switched to a Garmin Venu 3. It is better than AW in many aspects, but is also lacking in some. But the Connect app is a lot better than Apple Health.

seesaw··on Biological Miracle – Wood Frog
I wonder what happens to the gut bacteria ? Do they also freeze and get thawed ? If so, are those bacterium also having a special adaptation, or is it a function of the host ?
seesaw··on The upstream cause of the youth mental health crisis is the loss of community
My experience is very similar. I believe there are two primary reasons for this: 1. People are wealthier, and wealthier people tend to be more independent. 2. Population density is higher. Places with lower density, such as villages still tend to have that people to people connection like in the old days
seesaw··on Meta Reports First Quarter 2024 Results
Same for me too. I tried different VR headsets, but could not use them for more than 15 minutes without getting dizzy.
seesaw··on Fairbuds: In-ear with replaceable batteries
I have recently become a fan of bone conducting head phones. These go behind the ears. Sound quality is good for listening to podcasts while walking. No wires. You can still hear the road noise, which is important when you are walking outside. It also feels more sanitary.
seesaw··on FDA clears first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor
Were you able to find out what may have caused you to pass out ? I had a similar incident with no root cause. But that did set me on the path to become more healthy.
seesaw··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Canoo looks like the cars Apple actually would have created.
seesaw··on Amazon Sued over Prime Video Ads: Class-Action Suit Alleges Deception
I canceled in protest. If enough people cancel, that would send a message that people won’t support ads. But I am probably an outlier.
seesaw··on Significant features introduced for recent versions of Perl
Mine too. I spent over a decade thinking in Perl. While I have moved on, I still miss Perl, and hope it maintained its relevancy.
seesaw··on Google agrees to settle $5B lawsuit over 'incognito' mode
“The lawsuit filed in 2020 claimed Google misled users into believing that it wouldn't track their internet activities while using incognito mode. The suit argued that Google's advertising technologies and third-party websites that used Google Analytics or Google Ad Manager continued to catalog details of users' site visits and activities despite their use of supposedly "private" browsing, sending that information back to Google servers.”
seesaw··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
I have had prime for over 10 years. I think this would push me to cancel it. I think I would also think more before buying if I cancel Prime. We have also found Temu a lot better than Amazon these days. So this is a blessing in disguise.
seesaw··on Terry Gross and the Art of Opening Up (2015)
I have felt the same. In the interviews I have listened to, she came across as robotic and fake. I know I am in the minority, but I can’t think of an interview of hers that I enjoyed.
seesaw··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2023)
Perl was my first programming language. After more than two decades, it is still the language I feel the most efficient in. Glad to see Perl is still alive and kicking !
seesaw··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
Personally, I used to spend over an hour a day on Reddit. Now it has reduced to 10 minutes a week. Even when I go there, I see less quality posts at the top than before. So I think the blackout definitely had an impact, and Reddit is slowly going to become irrelevant.
seesaw··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
Oracle already has a log analytics solution that competes with Splunk.

seesaw··on In a Git repository, where do your files live?
+1 for clearcase. I enjoyed the time I used clearcase, and never found another one that was as pleasant to use as an end user.
seesaw··on Insect memories may not survive metamorphosis
One definition I have heard is the ability to achieve a goal in more than one way.
seesaw··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
The only way I use is through old.reddit.com. I won’t be going there if that is shutdown.
seesaw··on Mystery Blips
I use an electric kettle to boil water. I got it a while back from Costco. I find it to be faster than our earlier method - using the microwave to boil water.
seesaw··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
This reminds me of this saying:

We, the unwilling

Led by the unknowing

Are doing the impossible

For the ungrateful

We have done so much

For so long

With so little

We are now qualified

To do anything

With nothing

seesaw··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
There is also a question of spending $44B to rebuild a company from scratch. Couldn’t Musk have spent under a billion to create a startup and effectively competed with Twitter ?
seesaw··on Why are glasses so expensive? The industry prefers to keep that blurry (2019)
I have used an Indian online site [1] to order a really good pair of glasses. It cost me $150, but I found the quality to be much better than what I could get in the US.
