seemaze··on My AI Adoption Journey
What a lovely read. Thank you for sharing your experience.

The human-agent relationship described in the article made me wonder: are natural, or experienced, managers having more success with AI as subordinates than people without managerial skill? Are AI agents enormously different than arbitrary contractors half a world away where the only communication is daily text exchanges?

Nice weld, and nice project!

I'm learning with you.. the polarity was fresh in my mind because I recently got half way through a project with little bb's splattering everywhere before a friend with more knowledge asked if I had recently changed wire.

Welding seems to be a lot like baking; It is very deterministic in a sealed environment and the parameters are well understood, but in practice the experts rely heavily on feel and experience more akin to an artist.

I'm particularly fond of your fart analogy. It successfully captures the current AI zeitgeist for me.

I think a more appropriate question would be:

"Are there more or less examples of successful companies in a given domain that leverage software to increase productivity than software companies which find success in said domain?"

seemaze··on Tractor
Oof, those welds are ugly. The author comments on the welding at the end of the article, but I'd venture a guess that if using a MIG setup the polarity may also be reversed and/or gas shielding may be wrong. On my machine the flux core wire vs solid core wire with shielding gas require opposite polarities...

You are not wrong, but they’re much more generous than anyone else in the professional CAD space.
seemaze··on Vcad: Free BRep CAD in the Browser
Onshape is indeed fantastic for hobbyists and professionals alike.

Their licensing model is reminiscent of early Github days in that you can use all available modeling features free of charge, but must pay for a private repo. Otherwise, all user generated content is publicly available.

seemaze··on Where to Sleep in LAX
After traveling the globe for money and pleasure, I’ve reluctantly come to the realization that paying real money for real convenience when it comes to airfare is the best strategy. Suffering and inconvenience will come for you regardless of status or itinerary. Don’t make suffering a part of the plan unless you don’t have a choice.
seemaze··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
While this would obviously be harmful to the consumer, I don't see this as plausible.

Amazon was able to achieve this by positioning themselves as the primary distributor of the goods in question. Apple is in no position to leverage a monopoly over fiat transer or housing supply.

With regard to municipal transportation, perhaps they are edging closer with Apple Pay, NFC, Wallet, etc.. but I can't imagine municipalities supporting, or constituents accepting, a tax on their existing taxes.

Of course, maybe Apple.gov is the long game. Hard to say whether that would be better or worse that the status quo..

seemaze··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
>What next, should apple take a 30% cut of my rent because I found my apartment on the Craigslist app? Should they take a 30% of my train ticket that I purchased using the Safari app?

Sure they could, and usage of those products to purchase goods would nominally drop to 0%. People do not care about a lot of things, but they do care about losing money.

seemaze··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
Certainly not defending Apple's behavior in this instance, but isn't the success of the larger product ecosystem a direct driver of their App Store profitability? To strictly evaluate the App Store finances in isolation seems to be the sort of accusation you've levied against Apple in the opposite direction..

I like Apple less and less these days for various reasons, but I haven't purchased an app on the App Store in more than a decade. It's strictly a vehicle for local utilities when, for whatever reason, a browser will not suffice. Nearly all purchasing is done on the 'open' web.

seemaze··on Microsoft will give the FBI a Windows PC data encryption key if ordered
>the article states that Microsoft only gets 20 a year, and is responsive to 9 or fewer requests. Apple seems to get more and typically is more responsive.

That just makes me think that Windows is generally less secure and there are likely a larger number of instances where the AHJ doesn't have to request help from Microsoft to access the data.

seemaze··on 'Askers' vs. 'Guessers' (2010)
Reducing ambiguity by definition increases effective communication. Any number of social experts would undoubtedly herald an increase in effective communication an unequivocal boon to human relationships.
seemaze··on 'Askers' vs. 'Guessers' (2010)
Nothing in the article suggests forgoing politeness or etiquette. The grace with which a communication is delivered is orthogonal to it's explicitness.

I switched from Windows to Mac 15 years ago. It was a revelation when the terrible habits of verbally abusing my computer and anxiety saving files every 22 seconds just evaporated.

Those old habits have been creeping back lately through all the various *OS 26 updates. I too now have Linux on Framework. Not perfect, but so much better for my wellbeing.

I've found it much easier to increase your viewing distance for an equivalent effect. All else being equal this provides the additional benefit of reduced eye strain from a decrease in parallax.

For example, I've settled on ~160 PPI viewed at 100cm as my optimal desktop solution. It has an identical perceived pixel density as ~220 PPI viewed at 75cm.

Use a PPD (pixel per degree) calculator to find a setup that suits your needs: https://qasimk.io/screen-ppd/

seemaze··on When hardware goes end-of-life, companies need to open-source the software
I disagree. The average consumer needs to be educated that if a remote server can brick a device you have already paid money for, you do not own it. It has been leased.

The economics of leasing vs buying are well understood by the general public. Allow them to make an honest decision at the time of purchase.
