seeker61··on A thermostat company shut down every thermostat in the middle of a cold night
Some of the twitter users in the linked thread said that the Ecobee reverts to defaults when it loses internet connectivity ... not quite the same thing. Not sure which one is true, but if it's the latter ...

Oh well, I'll never own one of the stupid things anyway.

seeker61··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
My experience with people, and your quick accusation, lead me to believe that you are a grifter.
seeker61··on We're all fundamentalists now
Just as competently written, and also facile and shallow, as I remember from 30 years ago when Bill Buckley ran the show. How do they do it?
seeker61··on Cold fusion is now possible?
Wow, that sounds to good to be ... the exact word escapes me at the moment.
seeker61··on Facebook Referred to Kids as Young as Five as “Whales” for Its Monetized Games
It's probably part of their metrics and counts against them come review time. Just a guess.
seeker61··on Facebook Referred to Kids as Young as Five as “Whales” for Its Monetized Games
Thank you for doing your part to protect us from clickbait while Facebook ... what was it they were doing again?
seeker61··on Startup that charges $8,000 to fill your veins with young blood to defeat aging
Another sign of the end times. Fall, mountains ...
seeker61··on Ask HN: I think I want a divorce
I suggest that you re-read the things you've written about her with the following question in mind: "Am I making excuses for her behavior?"
seeker61··on Ask HN: I think I want a divorce
In other words, she doesn't respect the deal she made with you.
seeker61··on How to recognize fake developers, and why most of them get away with it
Don't you have some coding you need to be doing ?
seeker61··on The Journey to Serverless: How Did We Get Here?
Mercifully, the presentation referred to Apache as an operating system on slide 1, saving me lots of time.
seeker61··on When did the OOP principles change?
Extremely confusing discourse. I can only assume that was your goal.
seeker61··on HyveMind: Election Infrastructure on the Blockchain [pdf]
I believe that the main objections to this approach are subconscious and unstated. Or perhaps people just feel silly saying "That isn't fancy enough!" and "But but but you have to use a computer to do everything!"
seeker61··on HyveMind: Election Infrastructure on the Blockchain [pdf]
I see what you did there! LOL
seeker61··on Scientists Have 'Hacked Photosynthesis' in Search of More Productive Crops
Superweeds have been talked about before, in terms of weeds that are herbicide resistant. Kind of a yawn, really, unless you're a farmer.

But a weed that grows 40% faster than anything else out there? That's some scary stuff. (Palmer amaranth, for example)

seeker61··on Can you explain to a beginner why we use OOP?
Real reason: that's the only thing most beginners are taught. (For better or worse, but that's the facts.)
seeker61··on Ambient Cruelty
I'm glad to be old ... I think I'll be fortunate enough to pass by the bulk of the crap that is coming downstream at us all.
seeker61··on Amazon will be off all Oracle databases by end of 2019
So it's about time for that license audit! lol
seeker61··on His Body Was Behind the Wheel for a Week Before It Was Discovered
There's no shortage of new frameworks to learn. To paraphrase Tony Soprano: "You could build a jetty with what's coming out."
seeker61··on Why non-Muslims are converting to sharia finance
Is this an accusation of takfir? Do you have evidence for this accusation? Or is it just that you find it easier to impugn a brother Muslim's practice than to argue the facts? (I'll bet you're really fun at parties.)
seeker61··on Do We Worship Complexity?
The more complex a system is, the more people it takes to maintain, write, test for it. It builds the manager's empire and also increases mindshare for the complexity-driven approach. I've seen it many times.
seeker61··on Who wrote the New York Times op-ed? Using tidytext to find document similarity
Hopefully the author had a bright intern on staff who was able to crunch the initial draft through this old, old technology, then recommend revisions so as to point it away from his or her real identity.
seeker61··on Database “sharding” came from Ultima Online? (2009)
New sharding is but old partitioning writ large. Partitioning sounded too much like what grandpa did, so they gave it a jazzy new name.
seeker61··on Russia says space station leak could be deliberate sabotage
It would serve to undermine the credibility of current glorious system currently in place in Russia, whatever they're calling it at the moment. (Please. I'm being ironic.)
seeker61··on Firms That Bossed Agriculture for a Century Face New Threat: Farmers
At least blockchain is cool, which means that code weenies will actually take the time to figure out how it works. The same is not true of databases; code weenies find databases dreary and boring.
seeker61··on How I slashed a SQL query's runtime with two Unix commands
Re-inventing it. (And yes, that's worse.)
seeker61··on Running premortem analysis – imagining failure to ensure success
Look what I discovered! If you try to think of what can go wrong, it can keep you from making a mistake! My dad just harumphed at me, but he doesn't know what's cool!
