seedless-sensat··on Rivian announces 1B gross loss and 600M revenue [pdf]
One of their biggest plays are EV delivery trucks (and I see them on my streets). I'm sure someone will chime in about the environmental concerns of Amazon - but Rivan's strategy seems like a decent environmental message to me.
seedless-sensat··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
A new market opportunity for your company?
seedless-sensat··on Google stores billions of lines of code in a single repository (2016) [pdf]
Bazel is not failing in the open source world though
seedless-sensat··on Ask HN: How to test website from different locations?
Datadog Synthetics is nice, and reports great telemetry. It supports like 20 locations: https://docs.datadoghq.com/synthetics/
seedless-sensat··on Features I'd Like in PostgreSQL
Points 1-3 exactly describe my pains operating Postgres at scale
seedless-sensat··on FTX pre-mortem overview
I don't know how this is a "pre"-mortem
seedless-sensat··on Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market
Right, but TFA is talking about the compact camera market. I agree with the comment that cameras haven't kept up with the ease of use and convenience of phones in any way.
seedless-sensat··on OpenSSL 3.0.7 fixes X.509 email address buffer overflows
I liked this write up: https://securitylabs.datadoghq.com/articles/openssl-november...
seedless-sensat··on Shortest URLs on the Internet
I have found Chrome more willing to resolve go/foo as a web search. As a result, the Google autocomplete suggestions for terms like "go/m" are pretty amusing
seedless-sensat··on Three papers highlight results of record yield nuclear fusion shot
The private fusion companies still have ambitious (and most likely unrealistic) goals
seedless-sensat··on Use the Bazel Build System
I have always been amused by their motto "Fast, Correct - Choose two". The more common idiom is something like "Fast, Correct, Cheap - Choose Two". I guess Bazel isn't cheap.
seedless-sensat··on Postgres full-text search: A search engine in a database (2021)
Perhaps more similar to zombodb's hinted new pronto plugin: https://twitter.com/zombodb/status/1547389026235187201
seedless-sensat··on YouTube removes criticism of dangerous fractal wood burning, but leaves up tips
Would have loved to see a source of "34 fractal wood burning deaths in America"
seedless-sensat··on DevOps is a failure
I think the parent's argument is that a Raspberry Pi is limited to 1Gb link, so how can do 100k reqs/sec
seedless-sensat··on Electric Mercedes-Benz drove 747 miles without recharging, 2x Tesla's Model S
The article does talk more about efficiency and weight instead of just capacity
seedless-sensat··on Dragonflydb – A modern replacement for Redis and Memcached
Similarly, I really liked the ideas in paper accelerating Memcached using an eBPF cache layer in the NIC interrupt: https://www.usenix.org/conference/nsdi21/presentation/ghigof...
seedless-sensat··on Husky, Datadog's Third-Generation Event Store
Also, using external compactors give another independent scaling dimension. Nice
seedless-sensat··on Sergey Brin: The Facebook phenomenon is a problem (2007)
That was only introduced 2018 or so
seedless-sensat··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
I have found Datadog pretty nice
seedless-sensat··on It's time for an inequality index for cryptocurrencies distribution
This isn't necessarily true, because some of those largest wallets are probably exchanges/trusts. It can go both ways: one wallet may have many owners, and one owner may have many wallets.
seedless-sensat··on Wordle Is a Love Story
The NYTimes spelling bee, which they said they were inspired by, also is unobscured in the source
seedless-sensat··on Ask HN: Has remote work made you move to a new location or consider it?
That advice made sense 10 years ago when Williamsburg was cheaper. Now it's the same price and less convenient. I love Manhattan
seedless-sensat··on Wall Street grudgingly allows remote work as bankers dig in
I cycle into my office every day, 1h round-trip. It certainly increases my quality of life and I'm glad I had the choice (not requirement) to return
seedless-sensat··on YAML: It's Time to Move On
Plenty of tools lacking in the Starlark environment, e.g.: generating Starlark files, machine editting Starlark maps
seedless-sensat··on The joy of concurrent logic programming
Unfortunately the line breaks make this unreadable on a phone
seedless-sensat··on My Emotions as a CEO
> Does he really think a desire to leave is unique to the c-suite?

He didn't say that. I read an article about someone openly reflecting on their feelings.

seedless-sensat··on ASML, a $300B Dutch firm, makes the machines that make semiconductors
I did find the link, but was blocked by a login popup. It must be an A/B test.
seedless-sensat··on ASML, a $300B Dutch firm, makes the machines that make semiconductors
You need to login to show the whole thread. I hit the same wall. Twitter was already a terrible medium for these kinds of posts, now it just got worse.
seedless-sensat··on Costa Rica signs law to attract digital nomads
Another counterpoint, in Australia, you lose tax residency the day you leave (assuming you then spend a majority of the year outside the country).
seedless-sensat··on Google rolls out ‘pay calculator’ explaining work-from-home salary cuts
The pre-pandemic status quo is clear, but the point is that it doesn't need to be this way. Google can afford not to cut pay.
