seedie··on Stop Calling It “Military-Grade Encryption”
Probably it is because I'm not a native speaker but I'm not seeing any difference between Military-Grade or Industry Standard Encryption. Can anyone please clarify what the benefit is? Are these well defined terms and does Industry Standard Encryption imply that it's continually updated?

> MD5 is thoroughly useless as a hashing algorithm[...] but it was used by the military and banks in the past, so it's technically "Military-Grade"

If it was used by the Industry in the past wouldn't the same hold true for Industry Standard Encryption?

Their motivation is not to reduce maintenance but to increase efficiency.

"[...] the company had already pushed the envelope with lubrication, bearings and pulleys about as far as possible — creating a roughly 98% efficient driverain"

“The quest was, how can we get a 99% efficient drivetrain?”

In my naive way I guess she has to abstract too, maybe unconsciously to keep proportions for example.

For someone learning to draw without much talent, me, it is hard to know what is important and what to focus on. To me it seems like thats what these circles and lines are there for. Look at what is important and what proportions they have.

>> exploring things that are around her.

> That works for first few years of life.

I don't think so. If I look around me right now there are hundreds of objects and there are lots of questions I've never asked myself and might be worth thinking about. Why is the cups handle placed like this, what made the designer choose this font on this brochure etc.

But reading your comment again I think we talked past each other. While I was talking about the "I have to wait in line for the next 15 minutes boredom" you seem to talk about something totally different.

> because they can't stand how dull the inside of their head is

This sounds more like you are talking about a state of mind

> I hope you'll notice and help her find entertainment.

Thanks, I'll give my best :)

seedie··on On the Pleasures and Sorrows of Life Without Screens
True boredom seems to be something that we learn over the years. Watching my 3y old daughter she never seems to get bored. If shes not entertained and realizes she won't get entertained anytime soon she starts singing (improving songs with her own text ;), telling herself stories that evolve while shes talking, exploring things that are around her. She grabs everyday things and looks what she is able to do with them and what the charecteristic of the object is. She knocks it on the table, sees if she can bend it, if they can be stacked etc. Shes not looking at them for what she learned they are, but what she can do with them. I often caught myself when I wanted to say "that won't work or that's not how it is used" just to see her doing something wonderful or funny or stupid.. She does that to not be bored. Getting creative is a wonderful smartphone replacement.

you can do one-on-ones but you cannot add skype free users to a skype for business conference call. We're using Skype for Business and this limitation is very frustrating.

seedie··on Not Long Ago, Lenses Were Much Lighter
Thats a very interesting thought. The article is about DSLR and mirrorless system camera lenses though and I guess thats a market that always accepted extra mass for higher performance, in contrast to the market for compact-cameras.

I wonder wether the weight gain is based on the glas or the body. Are there more lenses with metal bodies to give them a luxury touch.

seedie··on Zulip Server 1.9: HipChat import and much more
The first time I saw it I had the exact same reaction. Using it I encountered two things:

- The UI looks better the more streams you are subscribed to

- The UI just "works"

I'm still not sure if the UI works because it is not distracting me with good looks ;)

seedie··on Zulip Server 1.9: HipChat import and much more
Not sure if this helps, but we were evaluating Mattermost and are still evaluating Zulip at the moment. Our users pretty fast had a tendency towards Zulip, while I've had a slight preference for Mattermost from a ops view.

We only have/had a short eval phase and our use case is a small raceengineering team with 40 people at the racetrack, independent of internet access. So a very particualar use case, and our needs might not cover you needs.

Zulip pro

* Threading model (can't value that high enough)

* All messages overview, no matter what stream they were written in

* Zulip community at chat.zulip.org with direct contact to the devs. Tim Abbott the lead dev helped me out in a issue with a user login (haven't used the Mattermost support so can't compare)

Zulip con

* Most ops work has to be done by a python script manage.py, API has room to improve

Mattermost pro

* API

* haven't measured but the UI felt smoother, faster

Mattermost con

* you have to pay for Enterprise features

Both have great docs and a docker deployment

seedie··on Zulip Server 1.9: HipChat import and much more
Do you remember the problems you ran into? I'm evaluating zulip with the help of the docker container (1.9.0-rc2) at the moment and docker-compose was enough to get it running.
seedie··on Zulip Server 1.9: HipChat import and much more
Hi, I don't know enough about Mattermost to be sure I understand you correctly about 'multiple "teams" on a single server' but you can host multiple organizations (realms in zulip-speak) on a single zulip server https://zulip.readthedocs.io/en/latest/production/multiple-o...
