secraetomani··on Beware of Cranks: Misguided attempts to solve impossible mathematical problems
> In fact, members of the academy were so tired of being inundated with quackery that in 1775 they passed a resolution not to accept solutions to the problems of circle squaring, angle trisection, or cube doubling.

This is hilarious.

Interesting. So like you have rational numbers and irrational numbers, you have trisectable angles and non-trisectable ones.

Xi doesn't care, just like Putin doesn't care.
secraetomani··on Designing a COM Library for Rust
That's because there are two COMs:

1. The good COM, which is just a class-like ABI.

2. The horrible OLE COM, which allowed you to embed Word docs in Excel and the like which is what most people associate with COM.

secraetomani··on A dumb reason computer vision apps aren’t working: Exif Orientation
I've encountered plenty of pictures with incorrect EXIF orientation, mostly caused by holding the phone at a weird angle.

For example, if I hold the phone parallel with the ground (aimed at the floor), what is the correct EXIF orientation?

secraetomani··on A dumb reason computer vision apps aren’t working: Exif Orientation
Surely someone can create a neural network that reorients the image, even if the Exif orientation is wrong (JPEG lets you can do this without re-encoding). Sounds like it should be a very simple problem for the vast majority of "regular" images.

Lovely name

secraetomani··on Designing a COM Library for Rust
DirectX is COM based. Which means that pretty much every Windows game, and many applications (like Chrome) use COM, at least in part.

Is there any recorded instance of Weibo stuff forcefully posting on behalf of an account?

NBA did the same thing.

Their Chinese statement was way more apologetic than the English one.

secraetomani··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
These kind of decisions are made by a 5th level middle manager, not by the CEO or the PR department.

Just like when the Delta flight crew forcefully removed that doctor from the airplane. Or a Starbucks employee calling the police on black people waiting there.

By the time PR get's involved, it's too late.

This is one crucial vulnerability of many companies in today's world, any low level employee can generate a huge PR disaster by just not being smart enough to see the bigger picture.

So basically today you need every employee to be trained like a world class PR agent.

secraetomani··on China attacks Apple for allowing Hong Kong crowdsourced police activity app
Yes, one man will have the final word regarding a ban on Apple. I didn't say that Chinese people wouldn't approve of the ban. But it will be for one man to decide one way or the other.
secraetomani··on China attacks Apple for allowing Hong Kong crowdsourced police activity app
There is a big difference.

US is not gonna ban Google or Waze.

China might actually ban Apple tomorrow. There are no courts to appeal. There is no retort. Just the decision of one man.

What, your C compiler includes high-definition image and audio files? What times to be alive...
secraetomani··on Guix Reduces Bootstrap Seed by Half
We are comparing here a full graphical OS with kernel & drivers versus a bunch of command line tools.

And no, Win95 did include real audio files (if small).

Even if not, way less stuff hiding in there than in your average computer. Remember that these days, Intel CPUs have web-servers embedded in them.

Maybe starting from something like an Arduino is a better route for that.
