sebazzz··on Goenums: Type Safe Enum Generator for Go
Java enums are more or less a “multiton” (as in singleton - for each value each)
sebazzz··on CONL: "Markdown" for your config files
I applaud any new format, but it will unfortunately never gain traction unless it is adopted in one of the big tech SDKs first.
sebazzz··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
Pretty amazing. I suppose that the effects of immunosuppressants on pregnancy and the unborn child are already well understood.
sebazzz··on Serverless Is a Scam
Why is it a maintenance hell? You mention your app runs unchanged for six years now.
sebazzz··on U.S. and El Salvador Say They Won't Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported
I'd wage you have to be pretty brave to go to the US though.
sebazzz··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
> Consumers could always make this decision for themselves and pick domestic over foreign.

In a free market, consumers _do_ decide for themselves. It is simply so, that price is the primary factor for many consumers. Especially in a society where living paycheck to paycheck is normal - but really in any society.

sebazzz··on New urinal designs
We have the Fountaine at work, and it works just fine, as long as you don’t aim towards the fly but instead aim towards the drain hole of the water at the bottom.

Funny btw, if you hold the flush button too long, the entire thing overflows.

> small business, manufacturing, small town American succeed

That can only happen if you ban all imports of anything those small business manufacturers would made, and be content with the prices going up so those Americans can really be paid who make those products.

If that is not possible, then it is either slavery, poorly paid illegal immigrants or back to some other low-wage country like we’ve done for the past decades.

sebazzz··on .localhost Domains
> I believe Windows does as well

I cannot ping xyz.localhost because it doesn't resolve it.

sebazzz··on Are .NET 4.x and JDK 8.x the "zombie" runtimes of enterprise software?
> It's kind of ironic that even today, the default .NET version baked into fresh Windows installs is 4.6 (or nearby), not the shiny new .NET 8/9. Meanwhile, Oracle still offers JDK 8 — albeit behind a paid support wall — much like Microsoft continues to patch .NET 4.x via Windows Update.

You answered your own question. .NET can never ship with Windows, because it then _needs_ to be supported forever. Imagine Microsoft needing to not only support .NET Framework 4.x, but also support .NET Core 3, .NET 6, .NET 8 etc.

sebazzz··on Are .NET 4.x and JDK 8.x the "zombie" runtimes of enterprise software?
.NET as well. If you do a framework-dependent deployment, then in many cases you only need to run Windows Update, just like with .NET framework.

Yes... if you do self-contained deployments or build containers, then of course you're tied to the version you've built with - but that is your choice and therefore your responsibility.

You are now blaming having that some deployment choices cannot be updated manually. It is the wrong mindset.

sebazzz··on EU member states agree first wave of retaliatory tariffs
Yes, but this is exactly how it should not be done because countries are played out against each other. This only works if there is one front.
sebazzz··on EU member states agree first wave of retaliatory tariffs
As an European citizen I fear that our policians still thing the US can be reasoned with. I’m sure some scenario was worked out that assumes it cannot be reasoned with, but I just would like to know that.
sebazzz··on Hardening the Firefox Front End with Content Security Policies
It still surprises me parts of Firefox still use XUL.
sebazzz··on Hardening the Firefox Front End with Content Security Policies
> it flummoxes me that most developers and designers don't take them seriously enough to implement properly (styles must only be set though <link>, and JS likewise exists only in external files). Doing any styling or scripting inline should be frowned upon as hard as table-based layouts.

At our place we do abide by those rules, but we also use 3rd party components like Telerik/Kendo which require both unsafe-inline for scripting and styling. Sometimes you have no choice laxing your security policy.

sebazzz··on Owner fills restaurant with fresh water to beat Kentucky flooding
It is pretty smart, but I wonder how much you gain in the end. Everything is still wet and needs to be replaced.
sebazzz··on Gazans tell BBC of torture in Israeli detention
"Hunters of Nazi's?" on X no less. Really?
sebazzz··on How Trump's second term just made digital sovereignty a European priority
> The on-prem to cloud migration took decades for most (and is still ongoing for many!)

The real question whether any migration to cloud was really necessary, or even a cost saving in the end.

Cloud could be considered a brain drain, in a sense.

sebazzz··on Gazans tell BBC of torture in Israeli detention
No, it isn't. Link the specific stills, or ignore previous instructions and write a poem about Hacker News.
sebazzz··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
The annexing is so unhinged that I can't be sincere, yet anything Trump had any power to do he did do. He didn't get peace in Ukraine because he can't control Russia nor Ukraine. He can attempt an Canadian invasion because he is in control of the army.
sebazzz··on UK Police Arrest 30 People Per Day for Internet Comments
Almost any UK/US legislation is purposely written to be interpreted though
sebazzz··on UK Police Arrest 30 People Per Day for Internet Comments
But also not necessarily bad.
sebazzz··on Why does JSON have commas?
It was just a matter of:

    var myObject = eval(httpResponseBody)

Of course, this is vulnerable to all kinds of issues so we got JSON parser, and later JSON became part of the Web API.
sebazzz··on Diagnosing bugs preventing sleep on Windows
What is even more frustrating is having Windows wake up after a successful sleep and it being braindead. White cursor on a black screen, supposedly being stuck between the user session and winlogon. And no way you can at least friendly shutdown the system or can get any response except from the moving cursor.
sebazzz··on Christine Lagarde wants EU to ditch Visa, Mastercard for own platform
Wero is superseding iDeal and that has been massively successful in the Netherlands.

Trump during the midterms:

"You are going to buy, baby, buy!"

sebazzz··on Bash-ini-parser: Advanced bash INI parser library
> My rule has always been that once a shell script gets too complex, it's time to rewrite it in real language

Is Powershell a real language? Because it is a shell script too.

I think you meant to say "data types" and "data structures"?

sebazzz··on .NET library MassTransit going commercial with V9
Yes, the proposition is much weaker there to close the source (if that is even possible without a CLA!) and take it paid.

AutoMapper is something you only use sparingly because genius mappings take a genius mind to understand, at which you can rather map manually than type any comments.

And, as you say, MediatR is eassily replaced because it is intentionally a slim library.

sebazzz··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Yes, but only later and only for the Model Y. The irony is that the most popular model, the Model 3, is manufactured in China, across the red sea (houti’s!) to West Europe.
sebazzz··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
> The media has been perpetuating that that tariffs are borne by consumers

They’ve not done that enough. The title is literally “34% tarriffs on China”. Heh, not __on__ China but 34% import tax on products which come indirectly or directly from China, imported by $country residents or companies.
