sebast_bake··on How the U.S. economy can look pretty good but feel pretty bad
The “vibecession” is very strange to me. Despite seeing countless analyses and hot-takes, I still feel like I don’t really get it. I haven’t seen any smoking gun explanation.
sebast_bake··on Bullwhip Effect
Original paper: https://portal.uptop.in/uploads/file_manager/file_manager/Th...

It’s like the supply chain management equivalent of “Attention is all you need”

sebast_bake··on When does MCP make sense vs CLI?
The opposite is true. CLI based integration does not exist in a single consumer grade ai agent product that I’m aware of. CLI is only used in products like Claude Claude and OpenClaw that are targeting technically competent users.

For the other 99% of the population, MCP offers security guardrails and simple consistent auth. Much better than CLI for the vast majority of use cases involving non-technical people.

Is it good?
sebast_bake··on The X Effect
As an Australian, it’s weird seeing Sky write an article criticising right wing bias, since Sky News is super right wing here.

sebast_bake··on US banks' private credit loan exposure nears $300B
"Historically, rapid loan growth at US banks has preceded asset-quality deterioration... the negative effects of which may only become apparent years later and typically during economic downturns."

sebast_bake··on Slint 1.14 Released
How does Slint compare to Flutter?
sebast_bake··on Wabi – Personal Software Platform
Cool, how does it work tho?
sebast_bake··on Modern Software Mostly Sucks and Nobody Gives a Shit
Modern software is actually quite good, but it depends on who the customer is.

In this case, the enterprise/IT/security people “give a shit” about things like ease of rollout/management, and unfortunately they don’t care about usability/performance for the end user.

At the end of the day, they’re the ones paying… I expect the software they’re paying for is actually quite good in terms of satisfying their needs.

sebast_bake··on Apple Plots Expansion into AI Robots, Home Security and Smart Displays
Interesting. Perhaps we’re headed into a new age of Apple - diversifying away from the iPhone after almost two decades of milking it for massive profits.
sebast_bake··on Some UK users on r/YouTube report that VPNs are being blocked by the platform
Can the uk not be dystopian for like 5 seconds
sebast_bake··on Rules by which a great empire may be reduced to a small one (1773)
Timeless rules… They can be applied generally to large organisations, and serve as an excellent summary of symptoms of elite blindness
sebast_bake··on Beyond Meat executive arrested on suspicion of biting a man’s nose
Ironic

Cool share but maybe someone could fix the kebab-case-title.
sebast_bake··on TikTok updated privacy policy to collect faceprints and voiceprints (2021)
No, it’s not different.

That’s why Meta is blocked in the PRC.

The west should do the same for TikTok.

sebast_bake··on Mygov is a ‘huge disappointment,’ key architect despairs
Australian here, I think the comments here overstate how bad MyGov is. I'm in my mid 20's, and I have literally never had to call any federal government organisation, visit any service centre or post any forms. For my entire adult life, all of my interactions with federal services have been through MyGov. This includes taxes, welfare, healthcare and education...

I can only imagine how colossal the undertaking must have been. MyGov ties together our largest, most bureaucratic organisations. Imagine being tasked with such an project, building the web application is the easy part, you also need to convince a country's largest organisations to change how they operate.

Considering this, I'm actually surprised how good MyGov is.

sebast_bake··on Taiwan Military Issues Civil Defense Handbook [pdf]
To someone who can read the handbook: does it specifically mention the PRC anywhere?

I'm just curious.

sebast_bake··on Zorin OS 16 is Released

sebast_bake··on Ask HN: Notion is withholding my company data, what can I do?
Something tells me that the fix is about to skyrocket to the top of their priority list.
sebast_bake··on Ask HN: Who uses ontologies in practice and for what use case?
They're increasingly being used in the building automation industry to describe HVAC and lighting systems for analytics purposes.

RDF suits because inference allows it to deal with massive scope of data (the amount of different hvac products and configurations in buildings is crazy), and prevents vendor lock in (a surprisingly common concern in that industry).

The two relevant schemas are Project Haystack[0], and Brick Schema[1].

As far as I know, the most mature analytics provider is Skyspark[2].

Super interesting space.

sebast_bake··on Ask HN: Which stack for prototyping?
I agree with the many who recommend not building a backend. I'm loving Supabase at the moment. In the past I have built things very quickly with Firebase.

For the front end, skip CSS too. It's such a time sink. Use Material UI or Ant Design.

sebast_bake··on When collaborating with others, watch out for these four letter words
I tend to agree. These are words used to avoid healthy debate and pressure people to do work they disagree with. This advice is too important to have been posted on April fool's day.
