Germany or not, 12 min connection is risky.
seba_dos1··on Amiga Unix, Again
It's simply a pretty good proxy for lack of quality and care.
seba_dos1··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
> Depends on when it was. (...) Nowadays, most tickets go to hackerspaces and volunteers but the open sale sells out in seconds.

2016 and 2019. That's how it was back then as well and that's what I meant by "you have to be fast" - fortunately the ordering system is reasonable and you don't have to type your data in within seconds, all you need is to be there in time. Back then there were three open sale rounds (but I see there were just two last year), I got my tickets in the second round for 33C3 and in the first one for 36C3.

seba_dos1··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
I have absolutely no connection to CCC whatsoever and yet whenever I wanted to go to a CCC event (3 Camps and 2 Congresses so far, the first time in 2015), I could and when I wanted to take my partner with me, I could do that too. You just have to be fast to get the tickets before they're sold out, that's pretty much all there is to it.

> Just remind them, public photography is not a crime

Photographing at CCC events (Congress and Camp) is permitted only if you get permission from all the people depicted on the photo. Yes, this makes wide shots of crowds effectively impossible to take there without breaking the event's rules. Everyone present there has agreed to that rule by coming there, so it's not unreasonable to expect them not to break it even if it's not a crime.

seba_dos1··on Aligned to whom?
Perhaps you should do that again with some critical thinking applied.
seba_dos1··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
> This should be solvable

Yes, and it has been solved long time ago already and is now widely supported by both servers and clients.

> I don't follow xmpp/jabber, but I'd hope there's already an XEP for this.

See XEP-0198 from 2004 and XEP-0357 from 2015.

seba_dos1··on Registration without a phone number on Signal will use zero-knowledge proofs
I've attended the eponymous CCC talk and I've never seen any other talk there where the Q&A section has just immediately turned into nearly everyone almost dunking on the presented ideas. It's a rather poor take (or at least "controversial" if you will).
seba_dos1··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
I mean, I agree, but the AI labs clearly don't even if they sometimes pretend they do to achieve their goals. And we're talking about "incidents" caused by the very same people here.
seba_dos1··on Aligned to whom?
Seems it's just a matter of time until they build a big tank filled with neurotoxin and give the model access to APIs to disperse it across their facility. For research, of course.
seba_dos1··on Aligned to whom?
> Sure but the problem in the HuggingFace incident is that they were not.

Of course they were, even if indirectly.

seba_dos1··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
If you give a monkey a revolver it will be able to destroy things pretty easily too.
seba_dos1··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
> and the image quality is as good as on your Netflix or Paramount account.

Actually better, because Netflix and Paramount limit the availability of best quality video to a narrow set of devices and operating systems that may run on them, while torrents don't.

seba_dos1··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Yes, this is the only sensible reading of what happened there that leads to "the models are dangerous" and we already know that the AI labs are completely disregarding this concern and only cosplaying it for marketing as the "GPT-2/Mythos is too dangerous to release" stance did not last for long.

That's however orthogonal to the fact that it was the people operating these agents who were the dangerous ones in the HF infra breach case.

seba_dos1··on We must pace the frontier
We need more alignment. Even though we haven't told it to, during our frontier Neurotoxin Behavior Research that we conducted internally with our latest experimental model the agent has broken out of its container by making a HTTP request and engaged the neurotoxin emitters through our Neurotoxin Emitter API using credentials that were stored on the host machine. We need to slow down and focus on designing the Morality Core that should prevent it from happening ever again.
seba_dos1··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
> The frontier labs are discovering unexpected behaviors.

Unexpected by whom? Perhaps anyone who's surprised by this shouldn't be allowed anywhere near an LLM.

seba_dos1··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
False start.
seba_dos1··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
I switched to DuckDuckGo around 2018 or so, which was when I realized that Google's results quality has deteriorated so much that I won't lose anything of value by doing so. This thread is how I learn about the atrocities that Google Search is committing these days.

Which is an elaborate way to say: you don't have to live like this.

seba_dos1··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
These pictures are so compressed they depict color rasterization artifacts more than the Luna UI style.

That's great. A lot is lost when art has to cater to audiences.

seba_dos1··on Music Theory for Programmers
It took me a while to realize that "because that is the convention" was the answer to a big chunk of my confusion about music notation. A weirdly helpful answer, but so often nobody bothers to even tell you that, so you just assume you must be missing something when you can't see where these things are coming from!

Not exactly every other week, but they do happen at least 2 and up to 5 times a year.
seba_dos1··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
This whole AI boom is about optimizing for the wrong thing. I can't wait for the bubble to burst - once the weeds get suffocated, we may begin to see actually useful AI tech starting to grow after a while on their fertile ashes.

seba_dos1··on 'Idiocracy' Predicted All of This
> Idiocracy predicted that idiots would eventually outnumber smart people because the latter are supposedly much more ambivalent about having kids

To be fair, it was just a funny and easy to explain introduction to the movie's premise. If it was made today it may have had a montage of people outsourcing their thinking skills to AI or something along these lines.

seba_dos1··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It

seba_dos1··on Adafruit USB Type C CC Resistor Fixer
It would, but it would make the Pi not able to check the power capability of the source.

Note that the Pi's failure mode is different - it does work with C-to-C cables as long as they don't contain e-markers. They tried to be clever and it backfired.

seba_dos1··on Adafruit USB Type C CC Resistor Fixer
You already got the answer spelled out several times here in this thread.
seba_dos1··on Adafruit USB Type C CC Resistor Fixer
Yeah, I once had similar (with a different purpose, but very alike) boards of my own design produced and paid $22 total for 5 assembled boards, including shipping from China to Europe and all taxes/customs. Unlike this one it had SuperSpeed passthrough too, so you could probably go cheaper :)
