seb1204··on Show HN: Bigwords.page – Turn any screen into a sign. The URL is the app
Ouch, life long child trauma created. No idea is good enough to impress mum.

All the marketing materials that got used for training. Marketing speak is not my cup of team.
seb1204··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
You would still be able to not write everything into a LLM? But yea the surveillance aspect is dystopian. I would not be surprised if Facebook, twitter and co already know a lot but have simply not reported it. Now the LLM follows the rules.
seb1204··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Well said thank you
seb1204··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Agreed. That they don't have obvious failure modes is not a reason to not be safe. The problem is just harder and OpenAI, Anthropic and co need to be forced to work the problem. Would you buy a car that randomly exploded the airbag?
seb1204··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
Please elaborate and educate us. I might be missing a stream but where I live we have three. But most people ignore any rules AND complain when costs go up.
seb1204··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
I do this this is theoretical, especially with recent spread ups.
seb1204··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
security by obscurity?
seb1204··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Until they turn 16 or 18.
seb1204··on America.gov
You can talk to the chat bot, or the input prompt and then in turn read out the results by screen reader. Does not solve the comprehension aspect though
seb1204··on America.gov
I agree, throwing everything into a LLM is just a lazy way of admitting it's too complicated and we don't know how to structure it.
seb1204··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I think many office suite use cases can be covered by simple, less feature rich software. Not everyone needs dozens of text formatting options. People use them because they are there but not making better documents necessarily.
seb1204··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
Same applies to many of the more elaborate usages of Excel I'd argue. Only few dive deep
seb1204··on The darker side of being a doctor
Would you say that people also need to be more responsible to be healthy themselves? Reducing pressure on the system and freeing capacity. E.g. healthy lifestyle to reduce diabetes.
seb1204··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
I'm not convinced that most DC use closed loop cooling. The recent discussions had a lot of water and power permitting topics.

Secondly drawing brine water from the aquifer to then putting the stronger brine back is essentially water consumption. I would also say it's externalising environmental cost of the stronger brine impact.

seb1204··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
Hm, I have little interest in Google's AI API and more in a streamlined flow of security updates and not an obscure prolonged waiting time.
seb1204··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
Not denying than many engineers work on Chrome just wondering how many of them work on Chrome features that are anti pattern, reducing privacy, improving information collection or tracking or against users interest in broad.
seb1204··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
Where is the form, forum or spot in general where one can tell Mozilla?
seb1204··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
Yes I can relate to this. Picking good, valuable feedback out of the noise has become a chore.
seb1204··on Telstra outage: The night a network decided the year was 2006
This was inspiring, thanks for sharing.
seb1204··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
I head similar stories. Also from Italy. Another aspect is that many 100+ year old have questionable birth certificates, as in the record of the birthday might be guessed. Different times back then.
seb1204··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
I disagree that there is no cost associated with making another. Externalising environmental and rectification cost should not be the default approach.
seb1204··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Agreed, considering that sor.say future wars will be around (drinking) water it seems reasonable to at least link some cost to the brine or the water required.
seb1204··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
I think "intelligence" carries baggage. When most people hear it, they're thinking of the constellation of things: judgment, consistency, moral reasoning, the ability to decide something and stick with it. An intelligent person has an internal model of the world, values they apply consistently, and the capacity to learn from mistakes in a meaningful way. LLMs don't do any of that. They perform statistical pattern matching on text at an extraordinary scale. They're shockingly good at mimicking the surface features of intelligent behavior. I think the overuse of the word intelligence is something to criticise as grandma is not across the tech details.
seb1204··on Will There Be a 7G?
I thought that's why many large venues offer free WiFi.
seb1204··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
Most likely the parent was relating this to revealing where you live and the privacy aspects. Yes indeed one could figure out where I went for holidays by my OSM edits but then any FAAG or similar would know that already by any social media interaction I might have had during the holidays. My bigger OSM edits are rarely during the actual holidays but rather before or after.
seb1204··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
You can define a location of your choice in your profile for example.
seb1204··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
Months behind is not fair. Apps like Komoot, OSMAnd or CoMaps have monthly refresh cycles. Others are shorter and yes there are longer (mostly obscure) update cycles such as apple maps, Uber, https://transportnsw.info/
seb1204··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Nice, I use the kids soccer boot cardboard boxes. There were plenty and they stack well.
