seattledev··on Facebook prevents sharing New York Post story on BLM co-founder's real estate
There are occasions when submissions are entirely removed and don't even retain the title or URL. I know this because I use hckrnews.com as my HN front page
seattledev··on Facebook deliberately made people sad. This ought to be the final straw (2012)
Data scientist means someone who's had classes in stats and knows how to use software to analyze data. They don't cover how to run experiment and don't cover ethics
seattledev··on Facebook deliberately made people sad. This ought to be the final straw (2012)
Yes, there is a way. You left them specifically opt in to it, you provide them disclosure documents of what's being tested, and you provide free access to mental health resources.
seattledev··on Facebook deliberately made people sad. This ought to be the final straw (2012)
I disagree. If facebook is testing content like this then they explicitly know which content makes people sad. To manipulate someone's feed to push them stuff that knowingly makes them sad for the purpose of experimenting with someone's emotions, that is highly unethical to me.

There is a massive difference in studying and directing traffic to help make traffic flow better. The goal there is to improve driving for everyone. Facebook's goal is to intentionally make people unhappy for the sole purpose of making more money.

seattledev··on ProtonMail CEO calls Apple's forced in-app purchases 'Mafia extortion'
U-haul charged me three times for the same thing. I spent several hours on the phone with u-haul trying to get them to reverse it. Ultimately they said the agreed I was triple charged but they couldn't reverse it and I had to contact my bank

It took EIGHT MONTHS and SEVEN phone calls with my bank to get them to charge back. And haul fought me every step of the process when they're the ones that told me to go to my bank. U-haul went as far as to straight up lie to my bank. I'm surprised they didn't forge documents with all the shit they were trying

seattledev··on Reddit’s About page doesn't include Aaron Swartz as a founder
To be fair, that posting is largely tongue in cheek because they're bitter for getting banned on reddit under the false pretense of violence. I'm sure a couple people believe it unironically but no one is actually organizing to hurt anyone.

Then make it illegal for any ship built by that company to dock on american shores until every ship they've ever built can be audited for not having this fuckery. At their expense. There needs to be consequences for people breaking the law.
seattledev··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
If this is the effect it had you on then you're dependent. But luckily in my case, and I think most cases, it's not really a psychological dependency. It took me maybe three months or more to kick the physical withdrawal effects
seattledev··on Reddit’s About page doesn't include Aaron Swartz as a founder
Chapo.chat is a popular one for leftists that formed after the chapo subreddits were censored/banned a couple months ago. Fair warning: most HN users aren't going to like it because they advocate for things like food and shelter and healthcare for everyone, no matter what
seattledev··on Reddit’s About page doesn't include Aaron Swartz as a founder
He was in fact, by the language of his contract, a cofounder. He had the legal right to call himself as such even if spez and co are assholes and pretended he wasn't
seattledev··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
Unfortunately this didn't work for me because it meant I would just sleep 20 hours a day of weekends and essentially didn't have a weekend
seattledev··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
This is very normal for first time usage. It's described as euphoria. I believe it goes away with sustained use for most people. It did for me, and I was sort of sad that it did - it was the happiest months of my life. Even now after not having used adderall for years I still don't get that initial euphoria feeling when I randomly take one again.

If you look elsewhere in the comments here they are often for sale. At some point however, the cost of renovations outweighs the benefit. Especially because the larger the ship the more profitable it is, and these ships are being retired for ones that hold up to 4 times as many people and are 50% longer.
seattledev··on Aerial view of a cruise ship graveyard
Seems pretty easy to me: cruise ships aren't allowed to dock on american shores if they don't have a constant audit and log of the fuel they use.

seattledev··on Seattle approves minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers
Seattle minimum wage is $16.39 an hour for companies with more than 500 employees. Otherwise it's essentially $15.75/hour.

seattledev··on Starlink internet satellites keep emergency workers online amid wildfires
So because someone else was also offering a solution, Starlink is the stunt? Is literally everything in life a stunt if someone has done it before you?
seattledev··on Starlink internet satellites keep emergency workers online amid wildfires
So I guess we're just going to lay back and accept that Comcast and other awful ISPs are going to rule over our access forever? Just completely shit on anything that attempts to improve the situation?

Additionally, there's nothing stopping several people from connecting to the same satellite dish that connects to Starlink. Yes there are bandwidth limitations, but for grandmas checking Facebook and emails you could have hundreds of people on a single satellite dish. This is still a huge improvement for millions of people.

seattledev··on Ask HN: Who was hired via 'Ask HN: Who wants to be hired?'
I was a couple years ago - it wasn't an organizational effort to post there, just one of the devs already on the team took the initiative to post it there. It was an mid level web developer role, nothing fancy. I worked there for about a year. It was my first full remote opportunity though which was a nice change at the time.
