searealist··on DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows
There are good reasons they have all converged on this model:

- The models can generate html/js as output instead of markdown. They all support something like "artifacts" that can displayed in the transcript or a tabbed panel.

- Many of them are able to have the model generate plugins to customize the harness. Typescript/V8 is really good for this.

- They all allow you to open web pages in a tabbed panel. Sure, you can do this with native be embedding a web browser, but with the previous points, you have to wonder if you should just use Electron / Tauri.

searealist··on Klassik Revives the KDE 3 Desktop on Modern Plasma 6
I dunno. Windows 98 is very usable. What does Gnome 3 have that someone who never used Windows 98 would miss?
searealist··on Klassik Revives the KDE 3 Desktop on Modern Plasma 6
What other desktop environment doesn't have a dock or taskbar?

Age has nothing to do with it. Gnome 3 is just bad.

searealist··on Klassik Revives the KDE 3 Desktop on Modern Plasma 6
You can configure KDE Plasma to be nearly identical to Gnome 2 / Mate.

It's great.

searealist··on Klassik Revives the KDE 3 Desktop on Modern Plasma 6
Unlike modern Gnome, KDE Plasma is _really_ good. In fact, you can configure it to almost perfectly mirror Gnome 2.

That being said, this is really cool, and brings back a lot of memories.

searealist··on The Great Crime Decline Is Happening All Across the Country
On the one hand, you have a meta-analysis estimating 7–28% of the U.S. homicide decline, depending on the model, after correcting for publication bias. That’s 4–15 percentage points of a 54% decline.[1]

On the other hand, you have the Dunedin study, where lead exposure was uncorrelated with measured socioeconomic status, which found weak links with offending overall and no significant link to violent crime.[2]

In any case, people talk about this like lead was the dominant factor in the violent crime decline, when these results don’t establish that. Even the meta-analysis leaves most of the homicide decline unexplained by lead.

I thought we were pretending it was lead?
searealist··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
How does this relate to 4500 vs 5090? I'm just pointing out that 5090 likely has twice the performance of the 4500 and likely maintains that at 2x watts if you want.
searealist··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
A 5090 has 2x tensor cores and 2x bandwidth and can be run at 400W (2x watts).

... or with llama.cpp with MTP.

It depends who is president.
searealist··on The Inference Hardware Revolution of 2026
2x is more typical, and only for dense models, not the sparse models all frontier labs use.
searealist··on EasyEffects can improve laptop speaker sound quality
Also, even the best speakers in the world can benefit from room correction, because every room behaves differently. The difference is HUGE in the lower frequencies.
searealist··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Don't forget about electricity costs, esp in California. Even with free hardware you may be better off using APIs.
searealist··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
Aaron had a history of depression and suicidal ideation that long predates his prosecution.

searealist··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
Swartz was federally charged with wire fraud and violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act based on allegedly unauthorized access, not simply prosecuted for copyright infringement or “downloading articles.” Also, he was offered a plea deal of 6 months and his own attorneys did not expect him to serve any time even if rejecting the plea deal and convicted.

Meta is accused of civil copyright infringement.

Very different things.

searealist··on Qwen 3.8 27B
> In my experience MTP's speed increase doesn't seem to justify the apparent loss of success at the edge, it would have to be at least 4x faster to meaningfully churn through the first 3 failures in the time it would have taken to do it once without

Speaking in terms of wall clock, the expensive part of decode is fetching the weights from memory. Predicting and validating a bunch of tokens using the already fetched weights is insignificant in comparison. Even if you have a poor acceptance rate for predictions, you won't really see a slowdown vs not using MTP.

searealist··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Just enable MTP on llama.cpp and you will get the same decode speeds.
searealist··on Qwen 3.8 27B
If you are not already using MTP, you should be able to get ~2x decode tokens/s with Qwen 3.8 27B.
searealist··on How Compaction Works in Pi
I expect Pi is mostly used with OpenAI plans, and OpenAI has a dedicated compaction endpoint you should probably be using with their models instead of a compaction prompt.
searealist··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
Sous vide is fool proof, you cant mess it up. All you have to worry about is the sear, and that's easy too.
searealist··on Almost no skill required to cook a steak
The internet loves using 137 for Ribeyes for the reason you said. I've had good luck going with 135 for ~4 hours.
searealist··on Cops Used Flock to Track a Man Across State Lines for a Pretextual Weed Search
What this article wants you to believe:

Police are actively using flock to identify people traveling over state borders to buy marijuana and search their cars.

What actually happened:

Police used flock to locate someone with an active warrant for their arrest related to domestic violence. They noticed a pattern of crossing state lines at certain times, and used that to nab him. It turns out it was to buy marijuana and his car reeked of it, so he was charged with that, too.

searealist··on Diamond industry misjudged threat of lab-grown gems, says Anglo American CEO
I read that Anglo as in Anglo-Saxon, and I was confused why they would throw that in a article.

It turns out Anglo is a diamond company.

searealist··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
NEM 3.0 is more fair. The grid is expensive and just as expensive if it is needed to be fully utilized 1% of the time or 100% of the time.

The problem is California forcing new construction to buy overpriced solar from builders that makes little sense compared to commercial solar installations + grid.

searealist··on RipGrep musl binaries occasionally segfault during very-large searches
There is a real tradeoff:

- The musl allocator is only slow with multi-threading.

- Almost all other allocators have trouble reclaiming memory when using multi-threading. This often results in multiples more RSS than single threaded or musl's allocator.

Agree with you on mimalloc. It can even be configured to be aggressive in memory reclaim at the cost of performance.

searealist··on Running Kimi K3 on a M1 Max
Because it's probably still more expensive in electricity costs compared to openrouter. Certainly it's not 98% cheaper.
searealist··on Running Kimi K3 on a M1 Max
My answer doesn't change if it is M5s. Where is the math showing a 98% discount over K3 on openrouter. Heck, where is the math showing it is any % cheaper? How much electricity will your M5 sip to hit 1M input and 1M output tokens that would cost $3 + $15 there? I bet it is more expensive on the Mac.
searealist··on Running Kimi K3 on a M1 Max
I'm not aware of any service that gives you a 98% discount and is served off of M1s. Did you do the math for what this would cost vs K3 on openrouter?
searealist··on Running Kimi K3 on a M1 Max
No one will ever derive any utility from running models at this speed. Please prove me wrong. Give me the number of tokens input and output (and dont forget about reasoning) and acceptable time to wait for it and the use case.
