seanmcq··on F.C.C. to Try Again on Net Neutrality
There are a few interesting choices in your comment that make it appear to be an Astroturf:

1. You state that it is "your experience" that "all" recent Netflix slowness is a result of peering contract disputes. Unless you are a network operations engineer at one of these companies how could you have this experience?

2. You link to the WSJ, which is not a credible source when discussing big media companies.

That said, you may well be a real person, in which case I would recommend changing your wording on commonly astroturfed topics.

seanmcq··on Verizon Using Recent Net Neutrality Victory to Wage War Against Netflix?
What bay area do you live in and who is your ISP?
seanmcq··on Organizational Skills Beat Algorithmic Wizardry
Ask them to write an essay.
seanmcq··on ESR: Abusing Alan Turing
Can we just delete this entire meme before it gets started? This is pathetic.

Edit: To clarify, I mean everything said by ESR here. Yes Turings accomplishments are great. However, it's because of those great accomplishments that what the British government did is even more atrocious. Turing made key and irreplaceable contributions to the Allied war effort, and this was repaid by bigotry.

Also, when ESR blamed turing for his castration was just... bigoted.

seanmcq··on Facebook Changed Everyone's Email to Facebook.com; Here's How to Fix It
I can confirm that my profile was modified to hide my real email address without permission. This appears to be more than a hype piece.
seanmcq··on XOR Linked List
Please profile tricks like this, as they may actually be significantly slower than their naive counterparts on modern hardware. The prefetcher knows what a linked list looks like, and it knows how to get it somewhere closer than main memory before the nodes are needed.
seanmcq··on Spooning by bitbucket
This was pretty painful to watch as a gay technologist.
seanmcq··on Fixing Student Loans: Let’s Give Colleges Some ‘Skin in the Game’
Why wouldn't universities just rase rates 10% to cover their projected liability?

This would obviously only exacerbate the problem and hasten the fall, but that does appear to be how independent actors work.

seanmcq··on What happened to CouchDB's popularity?
This is true until you realize you'll need to support keepalive and chunked encoding to write a reasonbly good driver. Two things that often require significant effort, if not custom coding, to make work with http libraries.
seanmcq··on Ask HN: Is brogrammer a sexist term?
How could it not be?
seanmcq··on Python Requests: HTTP for Humans
I note that you call gevent.monkey.patch_all() in async.

I'm still fairly new to gevent and I'm curious if others consider this good style for a library?

seanmcq··on Node.js has jumped the shark
Yes, not yielding control from a function in any evented framework will block the main event loop.

In programming languages that support coroutines, yielding a sleep every few loops will release the event loop. In languages without coroutines like javascript you will need to write your algorithm in CPS to release the event loop.

seanmcq··on Don't dumb girls down
You should pay more attention. Most middle age men on tv are fat. Zero middle age women on tv are fat.

Super models aren't the role model. Raymond is.

seanmcq··on One in five American men don't work: Where's the outrage?
Sure.

It's been more than a generation since women started making more money than men in some households due to increases in equality between the sexes. The phrasing and positioning used implies that a stay-at-home dad is something that we should be reacting to as an economic problem.

In other words, it required the assumption that men are the proper breadwinners in heterosexual households.

seanmcq··on One in five American men don't work: Where's the outrage?
"or getting by on the paychecks of wives"

This is pretty rampant sexism for 2011. Don't want it to go unnoticed.

seanmcq··on T-Mobile caps smartphone users' data at 500 MB/month
The limit justifications are fairly simple, you've already listed a dozen things you don't do that you know would take you over the limit.

In the presence of no limit, you, and most people, would do those things. It would use radically more bandwidth.

seanmcq··on Keith Richards, Karl Marx, and the satisfaction of genuine work
This is an honest question: When did "liberal" come to mean "who think that human wellbeing consists in the consumption of goods and services"

I presume this is a new political meme that I'd not heard. Where did it come from?

seanmcq··on MongoDB gotchas for the unaware user
Sorry for the slow reply. I can't speak about mongo's user base, but it does appear larger than CouchDB's. Both of them are several orders of magnitude less mature / well understood than MySQL. I'm simply trying to say, that technologies with no problems must have no users.
seanmcq··on The NoSQL Hype Curve is Bending
One of the biggest costs of a NoSQL solution in an early-stage startup: what's hot today may be abandoned by everyone else by the time you're a real company, leaving lots of effort inventing clever solutions to novel problems created entirely by your data.

It's much more feasible to start with a solid database and add caching for hot data than it is to try to build a company and a brand new database technology at the same time.

seanmcq··on MongoDB gotchas for the unaware user
As a general rule, switching from technology (x) which has actual users sharing lessons learned on the internet to technology (y) because it doesn't have many actual users and they haven't shared any lessons, is good way to become a beta tester.
seanmcq··on Build a better spell checker, win $10,000
Try another 3 zeroes.
seanmcq··on Quicksort is the new Hello World
This test gives an extreme advantage to lazy functional languages that they don't enjoy in any realistic context.

Trying to come up with a single test that is good turns out to be surprisingly hard. In modern languages I'm looking for the ability to do clean functional code, stateful object code, async programming, a solid module system, and a type system that doesn't get in my way. I really can't imagine a single 5 line program that would encapsulate all of these areas.

seanmcq··on What would you do if you were CEO of Google?
Wonder exactly how insane the world was for letting me have such an important job.
seanmcq··on Cause of today's Github outage
Lesson, don't let your CI machine talk to your production servers (firewalls are good at this).
seanmcq··on My dalliance with smart drugs - and the lesson I learned
I can verify this behavior on Provigil. You shine at your full brilliance, but become incapable of having unique/new thoughts.

I cut it completely, but I'm curious to see if the author has luck oscillating on it.

seanmcq··on It Gets Better: Google Employees
Thanks for sharing this. Seeing official google branding on this is pretty impressive.
seanmcq··on Higher education bubble poised to burst
Really, you think the all-time high unemployment rate among recent graduates is because they, as a group, are somehow uniquely unqualified?

I wish I were that arrogant.

seanmcq··on Why we don't need more women in tech... yet
Man, go try to buy a non-sexist "Congratulations" card for a new-baby. It took me three stores to find a green card without any gender-typed activities on it.

The constant sexism starts at day one.

seanmcq··on Higher education bubble poised to burst
I don't see any economic forces that would trigger a burst. In fact, I see most entry-level jobs demanding more education now than ever before.

People aren't getting jobs because they didn't get enough education, not because they got too much.

seanmcq··on Ask HN: Teaching programming to a 10 year old, and I'm kind of lost
Step 1, learn to elide almost everything except what you're actually teaching. This is surprisingly harder than it sounds and often involves saying things that are technically untrue.

Step 2, teach the things required to do tasks.

For a child, you should focus on things that they can understand the output of. Sound, animations, pictures. Turtle/logo is a fantastic platform in this regard.

For, well, everyone, you need to ensure that what you're teaching is what they're interested in. If they're not excited about moving a cursor around a canvas, then they won't learn anything.

You'll know you're teaching correctly when they start doing things on their own that you didn't expect.

Sean
