seanmceligot··on Amex's FaaS Uses WebAssembly Instead of Containers
"A key reason behind Amex's adoption of WebAssembly is that WebAssembly demonstrated superior performance metrics compared to containers."

Wasm faster than containers? I guess they mean under there specific circumstances. Rust or C on a Linux container running machine code should definitely be faster than Wasm bytecode.

seanmceligot··on Starlark Programming Language
It would be nice if python would show types in the documentation. Not only do I need that all the time, it would show python was taking type safety serious.

For example, knowing the return type of a function is Union[DataFrame,Series] rather than simply DataFrame would save a lot of bad errors.

seanmceligot··on Cutting videos in the terminal with chafa and FFmpeg
Download the executable? That's not safe. Even if your intentions are good, you're teaching bad security habits.
seanmceligot··on Gitlab Duo
This happened to me Tuesday September 28th 2001 at 3:30pm. I know because I never rewrote the complicated e-paper code that I lost when my SD card died without a backup :(
seanmceligot··on How to Determine the Error of an Air Quality Sensor?
I was looking for this too, "site:airgradient.com calibrate" brings a lot of results, so it seems like they support it, but I haven't dug in yet.
seanmceligot··on How to Determine the Error of an Air Quality Sensor?
I'm glad to see there's an alternative to Airthings. The problem with them is they should be calibrated at least every year but they can't be, so they just deny that they ever go wrong and pretend the problem doesn't exist.
seanmceligot··on Kobo announces color e-readers
I love the black and white boox as a low tech device. I do a lot more reading and a log less mindless scrolling on my boox tablet. There's also grayscale chrome and firefox plugins if you want to see what it's like.
seanmceligot··on Fun with Kermit and ZMODEM over SSH
I still miss sz and rz when I ssh from a computer with no ssh server like nearly every windows box. If I remember right, sz = send a file from the server I'm in back to the client server. rz = receive a file from the client server.

You can accomplish the with a new scp session on the client server, but it's an extra step. I use this as a helper when for building the scp command.

function scppath() { echo $USER@$(hostname).$(dnsdomainname):$(realpath $1) ]

seanmceligot··on Type-Level Programming in Rust
The SecureVec is nice. I've been waiting to see this become more common. Reminds me of this talk at ICFP 2010 on compile time Authorization checks.

seanmceligot··on Java 14 Feature Spotlight: Records
I switched to java from c in the mid 90's. I remember thinking how ridiculously wasteful it was to allocate an array on classes one at at time rather than as a block of memory. I think I was using berkeley DB at the time in c and it let you do that.
seanmceligot··on Debuggers Suck
Break-point debuggers take too long in most environments (with a few exceptions). I use linters, compilers and type checkers as my first line of defense. Next, logging and unit tests. Lastly, I like to have in interactive command line REPL with good tab completion if one is available and not to difficult to setup.

In python, for example I use: pycodestyle, pyflakes, mypy and logging, and bpython.

For web apps, reload time is the most important factor. Work on reducing the time to compile, reload and test.

seanmceligot··on Senescent cells stop producing nucleotides: new research
It seems to me that they would now do studies to find out what increases or decreases nucleotide production in cells. If, for example, you found out that capsaicin in chilli peppers increased nucleotide production, then that could be useful.
seanmceligot··on The Yoda of Silicon Valley
I once had to write a program for a class didn't have access to a compiler. I wrote it all in notepad and double checked everything more thoroughly than I ever would have done otherwise. When I got the computer lab the compiler found one or two type-o's and the program ran perfectly the first time. The experience changed how I write code. It's worth trying out at least one time.
seanmceligot··on The quitting economy
This quitting is completely forced in government work. Every few years the project will be turned over to an entire new group of programmers and system admins at a lower price. They often spend years trying to figure out how the code and configuration works and learn the business rules. It's sad to watch.
seanmceligot··on Attachment theory is having a breakout moment
The simplest explanation I've heard of attachment theory is kids should be attached to parents securely enough that they are comfortable transferring that attachment to friends and relationships later. Too far in one direction and the child never leaves the parents side or the parent never lets the child grow up. Too far in the other direction and the child never learns healthy bonding and trust.
seanmceligot··on Atlassian acquires Trello for $425M
That's been my experience working with JIRA the past few months. Bug after bug and always a bug report with someone begging for a fix and being ignored.
