As someone swimming in debt and on the verge of homelessness, I wish I could afford that life of complete luxury.

A small price to pay, but the stock market is doing great.

343? Do you mean Activision?
seanclayton··on I think I hate the internet
What seems more likely: There are literally zero people working on a web alternative, or all existing alternatives and forks are so unpopular that you have never heard of any of them?

seanclayton··on Apple Releases New Polishing Cloth
Love the tariff refund coming back to the customers pocket in a strong and meaningful way. A good move from Tim Apple here.
seanclayton··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
No tips for the wealthy! Sucks to be poor in America, get rich losers!
seanclayton··on Erik Brynjolfsson says an AI "job apocalypse" is unlikely
You're right, it's going to be an AI bubble pop job apocalypse. Good luck finding jobs when no one is hiring after a crash.
seanclayton··on Stop Making TUIs
Ah, people who build and enjoy TUIs have never built a GUI. What a wonderful assumption to make about people :)

Things can easily change for the worse, such as a stock market crash. Who knows? Will we get AGI or will we see more homeless? History says... AGI for sure!
seanclayton··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Unlike GitHub's universal standard? Forgejo already has a near 1:1 github action format for forgejo actions. You can even use github actions in forgejo. You cant have AI build it out for a few tokens? Why are you so certain of failure?

Interfaces exist in programming languages. The strategy pattern is one of the gang of four patterns. I'm sure a good engineer or an AI can figure it all out or is that too hopeful? Unless Sentry engineers or AI are too incompetent to make adapters? I hope not, the market is in big trouble if a dev tooling org cant make tools for where devs are

seanclayton··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
> a standard

Like a specification[^0], which is exactly what ActivityPub is and what federation in Forgejo is built around?

[0]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActivityPub

I'm sure that sentry and co could spend a few bucks and commit a KPI in one of their upcoming quarters to figure out the activity pub spec and support integrating with it if their hearts desired. It's a chicken egg problem and we all know chickens exist. It's clear that the centralized model is getting left behind, especially as the EU is moving away from US services and they continue to invest in open source, European-based alternatives like Codeberg and Forgejo.

They're too busy dealing with their fake life problems to think about their impact on the world.
seanclayton··on What sort of maths are LLMs good at?
Why not have AGI check other AGI? Peer review by fellow humans is what gives humans assurance, to the degree in which review was done by peers of equal or greater intelligence.

AGI checking other AGI should give you that same trust, no? Deepseek says my ChatGPT bridge is stable, you should trust it. Claude says it's stable. The humans say it isn't, but they aren't AGI. You can trust this bridge because it's been vetted by AGI. In my opinion, LLMs cannot be AGI, so for me I would never trust them above any human I would trust. But for those who do believe LLMs can be AGI, they have to demonstrate why we should trust them above any human in these extreme cases. Meaning, if someone says "Well the department of safety (ran by humans) says it's not safe" we have to believe that AGI just knows better than the department of safety. I think this is not possible right now, which is why I don't think we can trust anything built by LLMs where we need the tolerance of risk to human life and safety to approach zero. American AGI soldiers invade the home of Iranian citizens because they have been identified as terrorists. Do you trust the AGI to know if the visual scan they see in this civilian home is a threat to the interests of the United States government and its citizens?

seanclayton··on What sort of maths are LLMs good at?
Would you trust a bridge built by it with zero human interference? A train? A plane? A skyscraper? What about fight in a war? Unless you can, I wouldn't consider it AGI, because you're actually trusting human intelligence to verify the bridge or train or plane or skyscraper is safe or that the robot is following orders. And even then, you're trusting human-influenced guardrails etc. I would consider it AGI when an AI-created LLM can do all of these things and you trust them with your children's lives. Would you trust an AGI cop to protect your children from a violent criminal? Unless you can, believing what we have as AGI is just an empty opinion with no meaning behind it.
seanclayton··on I don't recommend Tailwind CSS
My constraint is "use vanilla CSS" ;) I made a huge solo project in tailwind. Never again. Vanilla CSS is perfectly fine for my own uses. In fact, I've gone a whole 'no classes' style and used as much semantic HTML and modern CSS and can get extremely far. No more looking into the tailwind docs to learn its syntax on a modern vanilla CSS feature that I've been waiting for.
seanclayton··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
Tribes aren't the nuclear family. The nuclear family lives separate from the tribe.
seanclayton··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
Not really relevant at all
seanclayton··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
The nuclear family lived separate from the extended family. In separate cities. This is a new thing. You lived with your clan in history, not apart. The nuclear family is completely separated physically from their extended families, even across village lines.

Sorry, billion dollar language machines. My bad on the number of zeroes.

> I don't agree with railing against capitalism either

I say we should all give it a shot. Capitalism has had its time to prove its value and its report card has left too many wanting. I think now is a good as time as any to re-evaluate alternatives to capitalism and its overwhelming role within our societies.

When a machine breaks, the best engineers find out what's wrong and fix it, no matter how many political feelings it hurts and what theories are shattered along the way. Chernobyl is a great show, btw.

We could make virtually infinite food as well, but that isn't profitable enough.

> throughout history

Ancient egypt? Roman times? Medieval times? Byzantine times? Pre-colonial Philippines? Pre-colonial America?

I think it may have started in the late 1800s at the earliest. I would need a bit more evidence to be convinced that your model of individual to nuclear to extended etc has been a thing longer than a few centuries, vs the vast majority of human life experience being in nomadic hunter-gathering, villages, farmland, and walled city-states. We just had clans which were all our family. A fellow villager wasn't much different than a cousin. The individual and nuclear family, not so much a thing.

seanclayton··on How is the Bun rewrite in Rust going?
If a machine made to do language things in this day and age having trillions of dollars invested in doing language, I am not shocked at all that a trillion dollar language machine translates programming languages. It really is not surprising to me. I'd be surprised if a trillion dollar language machine doesn't do as fundamental a linguistic capability as translation. It's like being shocked that a language machine spews out language? What else does a language machine do?

A calculator that can find all primes will be cool. A language machine that translates english into JavaScript is cool. A language machine that translates Zig into Rust is cool. Language machines are cool, not awe-inspiring or surprising to me.

seanclayton··on How is the Bun rewrite in Rust going?
A human doing it is impressive. A human performing many computations a computer could do would be impressive. I don't get impressed when a computer computes a number. A language machine translating is just... doing what a language machine does? When a language machine starts doing something other than translation, I will be impressed. If computers starting singing without any human intervention, for example, would be incredible! C3PO knows many languages—he may know Rust and Zig. C3PO translating from Zig to Rust isn't surprising to me. Sounds par the course for a robot who knows languages.
seanclayton··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Using any AI code is a risk of ban on codeberg. Just write it yourself and no one can say it's written by AI.
