sean_the_geek··on OpenAI – How to delete your account
Done and deleted.
sean_the_geek··on AI Destroys Institutions
A thought provoking essay on impact of AI systems civic institutions.
sean_the_geek··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Seems like we are clearly in the _“post peak Apple”_ era now. This update is just for the sake of update; iPad lineup is (even more) confusing; iPhone cash-cow continues but at slower growth rate; new product launches - ahem! Vision Pro - have seen low to negligible adoption; marginal improvements to products so consumers are holding out longer on to their devices.
sean_the_geek··on A coder considers the waning days of the craft
My two cents having used AI in programming. It is merely a tool to create. It is not the creator yet, at least in its current iteration.

AI is to programming what electric drill were to wood working before they were invented. It made life easy; it sped up the process and may be it did a job a bit finer. But you still need to understand where to drill and how to create the thing. There are a number of analogies like this you can find.

sean_the_geek··on Show HN: Sketch – AI code-writing assistant that understands data content
Really cool and helpful. Is there anything similar for R?
sean_the_geek··on Graduates.name's Privacy Policy
This is perhaps the best example of how NOT to provide privacy policies. Some snippets

2. What kinds of information do you collect? We collect information that (i) you provide to us or authorize us to collect as a result of using our products (e.g. social media accounts, call and text logs, etc.) and (ii) information about your use of our products and services (e.g., browser type, search categories, location).

5. How do I stop the collection of my information? In order to stop further collection of information by us, you will need to stop using our products and services.

_I never signed up to your services._ Never heard about you and never used your products.

The links to remove your information go nowhere. Is there a way to report this site?

sean_the_geek··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
If you feel truly happy about someone else but at the same time not let it reflect on you, then I would say you are minority. The first part of my sentence is achievable and is genuinely positive , at least in a way. The second part - not letting it reflect on you - is IMO most people struggle.
sean_the_geek··on Show HN: I made Ankify that converts notes to Anki cards
Many thanks. This looks neat and I will check it out. I am heavy user of Anki and was in a similar situation. I ended up taking notes in Notion and using https://2anki.net/ to create cards. It does restrict the type of notes you can take. Your application looks comprehensive. Thanks.
sean_the_geek··on Ask HN: Developers who switched careers, what are you doing now?
I was a software developer for 12 years then switched to finance. I trade fixed income now! I hate it sometimes and miss the good-ol software development.
sean_the_geek··on Bypass Paywalls: a browser extension to help bypass paywalls for selected sites
This. Some of the news paper sites mentioned in the list do a good reporting and I subscribe to a few. Quality reporting is not cheap or easy and takes efforts. Let’s pay for quality else we would be left with click-bait, as supported and no information content news.
sean_the_geek··on Statistical Rethinking (2022 Edition)
Thank you!
sean_the_geek··on Cargo Is Piling Up Everywhere, and It's Making Inflation Worse
I don’t understand the downvotes to your comment. It is a valid alternative perspective.
sean_the_geek··on Trying to study textbooks effectively: a year of experimentation
I have been recently integrating Anki into my book reading. If you are willing to share your Anki cards on books there has been a relatively new subreddit that might interest you. https://www.reddit.com/r/ankibookclub/
sean_the_geek··on How I read books: a guide on how to learn
This. The best advice I have received is from people who never intended to share it and were almost shy about it. It's only thorough my observation that I learned about their skill.
sean_the_geek··on Ragya – Indian classical music played by time of the day
Thank you!
sean_the_geek··on Flood of Oil Is Coming, Complicating Efforts to Fight Global Warming
To me, it has more do with symbolism than actual utility.

Worryingly I am seeing the same trend in London, UK where I live. At my local train station , which is 20 mins from City, I see the F150, Rams and what not parked. The owner clearly working/taking train into City. They are sparkling clean and occupy parking bay edge to edge.

London where space is constrained, public transport is readily available and rental vans can be arranged on your phone, I fail to understand why City working person would need it except for the messaging impact of owning a macho looking vehicle.

sean_the_geek··on What Happened to Hadoop
To me, three biggest things that led to reduced adaption of hadoop in-house 1. Cloud computing - hadoop was (and probably is) an expensive platform to manage in-house 2. Docker and Kubernetes 3. Relational databases and SQL will take to you 95% there
sean_the_geek··on Elements of Programming
Thank you very much for posting the link! This book is phenomenal. The prices for previous editions were pricing me out; now ordered a paperback for myself.
sean_the_geek··on A Tiling Desktop Environment
+1 for Magnet. Been using it for a while and it works like a charm.
sean_the_geek··on Boeing altered key switches in 737 MAX cockpit limiting ability to shut off MCAS
Yes I do. But as the comment above says, I am not risking it, even though it is borderline irrational.
sean_the_geek··on Boeing altered key switches in 737 MAX cockpit limiting ability to shut off MCAS
Some airlines do! Qatar and Emirates, I think.
sean_the_geek··on Boeing altered key switches in 737 MAX cockpit limiting ability to shut off MCAS
Count one more please. Searched for flight, saw Boing 737, no thank you! Paid premium for Airbus. That’s for three passengers.
sean_the_geek··on In India, high-pressure exams are creating a student suicide crisis
"Interests, skills, background, ambitions and the human behind the degree all goes to hell." This. Can't agree more.
sean_the_geek··on Pakistan airline admits taking extra passengers in aisle
As an an Indian, I completely agree and it annoys me every time I fly home. I just don't understand what's the rush? I mean, the plane hasn't even touched the runway yet and people are scrambling for overhead luggage, some of them are turning on their mobiles on and are on call, heck I even saw even once the toddler taken out of the belt. All for what? To go and wait in aisle or bus or in front of the airline staff or the luggage belt. It grinds my gears every time.
sean_the_geek··on Del.icio.us export disabled and support email down
Ha! Tried to export my bookmarks from them a couple of weeks back and got the exact same message. Apparently I am not the only one which is making me think is it deliberate?

My bookmarks are not precious but I would like them back del.icio.us! Shameful!

sean_the_geek··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
+1 for Sense of Style. I found Elements of Style to be very strict. The grammatical rules were portrayed as black/white so you are either correct in its use or you are wrong. I also felt that the guidelines somewhat do not apply to contemporary modes of communication for example email, IM, a casual note. Sense of style was very forgiving in grammar. The focus was on getting the message communicated. This, has helped me immensely as somebody who learned English as secondary language in school. Haven't had chance to gift it but highly recommended.
sean_the_geek··on 99-problems in Java 8, Scala, and Haskell
Warning:shameless promotion, here's my 'R' take on 99 problems, needs working on though! https://github.com/saysmymind/99-Problems-R
sean_the_geek··on O Reader My Reader – Remembering Google Reader
Talking about RSS reader, I was becoming (almost!) fan of digg reader until they updated their iPad app and then links to sites won't open! How crazy is that! Uninstalled immediately, deleted digg account and I am a happy feedly user since then. No regrets so far.
sean_the_geek··on Glot.io: Open Source pastebin with runnable snippets and API
+1 for R. I was pleasantly surprised to see Julia there
