seam_carver··on Show HN: Using 2D DFT, dithering, etc. to maximize eInk manga image quality
KOReader has built in contrast and dither options that may do what you want.

And a rainbow removal plugin which uses same method.

There are a lot of koreader plugins that implement individual features. Any in particular you want?

But I prefer to preprocess on a pc to maximize ereader battery life.

KCC best features:

1) filesize optimization. Think 600 to 100 mb after optimization per volume depending on source and settings. Does it by downscaling and dithering from 256 to 16 shades of gray (e.g. 8 bit to 4 bit)

2) black level correction. You need pure blacks in eink. Dark gray looks ok on paper and normal screens but not eink. Does it with histogram manipulation

3) semi automatic 2 page spread joining. spreads can be autorotated or not.

4) rainbow removal on kaleido 3 color eink with 2D discrete Fourier transform

Yes, I agree, eink is so close to physical paper. I have shelves of physical manga but eink is close enough to that experience for me.

Ever experienced the bug where usb loaded kepub manga disabled bookmarks and annotations?

Indeed, and my kindle scribe 2022 10.3” 64 GB is bigger than a physical manga volume. I couldn’t imagine using anything smaller

A lot of people still use KCC with non kindles for the file size and page turn performance improvements!
seam_carver··on Show HN: Using 2D DFT, dithering, etc. to maximize eInk manga image quality
KCC has a feature to combine spreads that I added, I think it works pretty well, photos in readme.

After combining you can autorotate it or not, it’s an option.

seam_carver··on macOS 27: Workaround to avoid downloading AI models and save storage
macOS 15 still gets security updates.
seam_carver··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
In Fire Emblem 3 Houses, the final boss of the Azure route has 199 HP and is standing on a 60 HP heal tile.

If you deal 3 damage, it goes to 196. 196+60=256.

This overflows to zero and you win.

Tired of iOS 26 bugs. Hopefully this fixes.
seam_carver··on Rakuten Kobo returns to U.S. retail as sales double
I am the developer of an app where its main purpose is to optimize file size and page turn performance of comics/manga on low-powered ereaders like Kobo: https://github.com/ciromattia/kcc

I recently switched to Safari, I'm actually very impressed by how well it works.
seam_carver··on Distributing Mac software is increasing my cortisol levels
Honestly, I kind of support this lack of backward compatibility. So many apps I use from big companies are still Intel based and leaving tons of performance on the table. This will finally force them to change when Rosetta is deprecated.

Open source apps are all native.

Isn't code signing even harder/more expensive on Windows?
seam_carver··on iOS 18.7.3-18.7.6 were withheld from most devices; iOS 18.7.7 is enabled for all
"Note: We enabled the availability of iOS 18.7.7 for more devices on April 1, 2026, so users with Automatic Updates turned on can automatically receive important security protections from web attacks called DarkSword. The fixes associated with the DarkSword exploit first shipped in 2025."

https://support.apple.com/en-us/126793

I speculate withholding security updates from iOS 26 compatible devices still on iOS 18 to force people to update didn't work out due to Liquid Glass resistance.

seam_carver··on Apple releases iOS 18.7.7 to patch DarkSword for iOS 26 compatible devices
This is highly unusual since iOS 26 compatible devices didn't get iOS 18.7.3-18.7.6
seam_carver··on Not buying another Kindle
Side tangent: I’m the developer of Kindle Comic Converter. Kindle updates 5.19.2+ have completely broken the sideloaded manga reader with bugs like huge margins, pages being on the wrong side in 2 page landscape mode, no panel view, no % read tracker, and laggy page turns. I’ve documented the problems here and the first report was 60 days ago. https://youtu.be/Eo6K7omlE7g

And I haven’t even touched all the problems with normal sideloaded books like broken embedded/publisher fonts.

And the 11th gen seems to have the final update be 5.19.2 so there is no hope of future fixes.

seam_carver··on Understanding the FFT Algorithm (2013)
If anyone is interested, I made a video about my favorite application of the 2D discrete Fourier transform, where it's used to erase rainbows on manga screen tones on color eink Kaleido 3 on Kobo Colour: https://youtu.be/Dw2HTJCGMhw?si=hlhwHv0qB6SoMha9
seam_carver··on Fixing a monitor that goes black, off or blinks due to static electricity (2023)
My Mac Mini M2 sometimes blinks in November months. I've replaced my display cable recently with an HDMI to DVI cable with ferrite cores from monoprice, I'll see if it makes a difference this November.
