seaish··on Generics and Compile-Time in Rust
Does anyone actually call it "Stringify"? I would call it "to string".
seaish··on Show HN: A basketball hoop to maximize shots that go in [video]
It's optimizing for an average of shots from more or less arbitrary locations, so it's not necessarily a perfect parabaloid.
seaish··on How I Start: Rust
Yeah but I'm guessing it's there in case someone has disabled it globally.
seaish··on How I Start: Rust
Why no `cargo run`?
seaish··on Yap: An ephemeral, Real-Time chat room with up to six participants
So I tried putting a link in the box on the right and it just turned black. What is it supposed to look like?
seaish··on City Roads – Draw all roads in a city at once
Apparently it can't load all of California, but other than that, this is really cool.
seaish··on HTML attributes to improve your users' two factor authentication experience
The one after it has "text" so I'm guessing it's just a mistake.
seaish··on Firefox 72.0
This extension does that mostly. The only problem is that it zooms linearly, so when you get closer it takes more input to scale the same amount. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-touch-z...

Also read the description: there's an option to enable it, but for me at least, it was too buggy to use.

seaish··on Floatplane – Linus Tech Tips launches their own video hosting platform
You can. This is just CSS, so it's pretty easy to install Stylus on Firefox mobile and create a rule.
seaish··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
I have a friend who did learn to ride a bike in an hour. I was extremely surprised, but he is the fastest learner I know so I don't think it's typical.
seaish··on The 80/24 Rule
I don't know how everyone uses such small font sizes. I think mine is set to 16pt.

The one thing that frequently makes me ignore line lengths is URLs. They seem to be most readable when on one line, even if it's 200 characters long.

Also, what kind of variable name is `maîtreD`? I doubt many regions have î on their keyboard.

seaish··on The two-value syntax of the CSS Display property
The outer one should stay as "display" and the inner one could be "children" or something.
seaish··on California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving
If you picked up a paintbrush, you could say "human capable of painting the Mona Lisa has started painting". The article doesn't really give any information about what makes this fault special, besides not having seen it move before. Is the original paper available?
seaish··on Wolfram Rule 30 Prizes
It's fundamentally 1D, with the vertical dimension used to illustrate how it evolves over time.
seaish··on Show HN: Bot Land, a game where you fight others via code
I think they were just saying that since they code for a living, they don't want to play games that are also code.
seaish··on Sites with dumb password rules
The one that actually tells you they store plaintext passwords is when it can't be close to previous passwords.
seaish··on Introducing nushell
And 484 when installing with rawkey and clipboard.
seaish··on Introducing nushell
This isn't a problem if versions are pinned.
seaish··on Edge sends full URLs of pages visited to Microsoft
Doesn't it send full URLs anyway when you're signed into Edge or Chrome to sync your history?
seaish··on Cities: Skylines Is Turing Complete
Kind of, but the interesting part is finding out how to make the transistor in the first place. These things usually take a few years to be found despite the popularity of such games.
seaish··on 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California
It's also larger than the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that destroyed a lot of San Francisco, which was 6.9.

A lot of this also has to do with how close to populated areas the earthquake is, and if the same quake happened today, the damage would be much less due to better construction.

seaish··on Understanding Kafka with Factorio
Obviously the circuit system is Turing complete on purpose, but I believe the belts and splitters may be Turing complete on their own, which would definitely be accidental and surprising to most.
seaish··on Olivia MFSK
This expired in February. Google Patents puts the current status as today's date, so it looks like this happened today but it did not.
seaish··on Why Was Mini USB Deprecated in Favor of Micro USB?
If you replace Mini USB with Micro USB and replace Micro USB with USB C, most of the answer still makes sense.
seaish··on Falsehoods programmers believe about Unix time
Unix time is based on a hard calculation of UTC seconds, minutes, hours, days, and years. So UTC jumping causes a discontinuity in Unix time.

Im pretty sure the second graph is mislabeled (the UTC second after 23:59:60 should be 00:00:00), but Unix time takes 23:59:60 to mean the same as 00:00:00. So 23:59:60.5 is also the same as 00:00:00.5, and so on. If you parsed the Unix time into a readable timestamp, it would tell you it's the first second of the next day for two seconds.

seaish··on GitHub Package Registry
With the npm example, you can tell npm to use github's package repo instead of npmjs.com, and install from or publish to that one instead. Basically another npm, but the same command line app.
seaish··on Name one thing in this photo
Lots of this has been done in language, like the Rockwell Retro Encabulator (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXJKdh1KZ0w) and Plumbus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMJk4y9NGvE)
seaish··on Katie Bouman, the computer scientist behind the first black hole image
The main TED channel occasionally reposts talks from TEDx conferences. This one should be the original posting: https://youtu.be/P7n2rYt9wfU
seaish··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
There's a huge barrier to entry for any of the possible applications that most people just don't want to risk. For art, it costs $10 to download photoshop, but it costs an average person $500+ (computer hardware and headset) to get into VR. There's also no well-known VR artists to get people excited about it.

I'm only seeing good things about VR gaming, though. It's definitely becoming more popular there. Lots of people seem excited for the Steam Index.

seaish··on Why Do Buses Bunch?
This would help with not wasting the trailing bus's extra speed, but I think the buses being that close together is already considered failure. And in the real world, there would be many more stops on a circuit. Any advantage the faster bus has will be reset in 1 or 2 stops, and on a route with 10-20 stops, the extra space between them is negligible.
