Is there a good comparison of how each fabs nanometer metric (aka version number) lines up?
sdflhasjd··on 25 hours of Xcode Cloud now included with the Apple Developer Program
What I meant by platform is GitLab/GitHub/Teamcity/etc. You can at least use the same CI platform for all your builds, you "just" need some macOS runners/build agents to do iOS builds. Xcode cloud is another platform that basically nothing integrates with - an additional shit option to add to the existing pile of shit options.
sdflhasjd··on 25 hours of Xcode Cloud now included with the Apple Developer Program
Right, but would you want a separate CI platform just for iOS? Maybe if you were only developing iOS and macOS apps it would be attractive. I'm also not convinced Apple will continue to support or how much Apple churn it will introduce.

It also doesn't have a proper web interface and Xcode is already one of my least favourite tools, so I'm not keen on the prospect of relying on it even more than I already do.

sdflhasjd··on Prince Harry wins phone hacking case against British tabloid
Yes, it was a combo of either calling from any number and guessing the PIN (which was also likely to be still the default) or number spoofing to bypass the PIN altogether.

This isn't enshittification. This is a sustainable business bought by a greedy business to then squeeze dry their customers.

sdflhasjd··on Facebook Open Sources StyleX
JSX is so good because it's an effective language extension, but CSS-in-JS still feels like a dirty mess, everything just becomes strings in objects, it just takes the elegance of the CSS syntax and throws it out the window.

Like, look at this:

  const styles = stylex.create({
    base: {
      width: {
        default: 800,
        '@media (max-width: 800px)': '100%',
      },
    },
  });

I think the catalogue is just as good, but searching can be more difficult.
sdflhasjd··on What's lost when we photograph life instead of experiencing it? (2016)
Taking the title completely literally, I still find with modern AI and expensive phone cameras that it's still difficult to accurately capture colour as we experience it.

I tried to share a picture of some fabric samples get an opinion from someone. From the display, most of the samples looked correct except one - a deep turqoise that the camera would refuse to capture no matter what exposure or white balance I chose.

I remember browsing through a pantone book (I think) and how all the colours would react to the tiniest change to ambient light, something you'd need a spectrometer to properly capture. Displays and cameras have been getting higher and higher resolutions, but the fedility in which we can capture and display colour doesn't seem to have improved in the last 10 years.

sdflhasjd··on What's lost when we photograph life instead of experiencing it? (2016)
In my late teens, I accidentally formatted the wrong harddrive and erased hundreds of photos. Most of those photos were rubbish, blurry, and of things weren't important, or if they were, they aren't any more.

But amongst that hoard was some pictures of valuable memories, or places and people that no longer exist. I realised that I didn't have a single picture of my cat who passed away shortly after I lost all the pictures.

Now I don't take that many photos, and I don't let the activity of taking photos get in the way of any experience, but even the blurry crappy photos I make sure are thoroughly synced and then backed up.

sdflhasjd··on macOS Sonoma is setting records for update size
It's a bold extrapolation from two updates though, I doubt it will continue, and I'll be downloading 1TB Xcode updates in ten years time.

Also, I just checked. Even this record "small" sized update is still an upward trend based on when my Internet connection was originally provisioned.

sdflhasjd··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
I didn't switch because of Joe Rogan, but Spotify kept changing the UI and at some point it got so annoying to browse music over the crappy podcasts being shoved in my face that I switched to Tidal.
sdflhasjd··on macOS Sonoma is setting records for update size
Download size inflation seems to be outstripping improvements in my internet connection.
sdflhasjd··on macOS Sonoma is setting records for update size
I don't know how GOG delivers updates, but 100GB is basically the download size of the whole game, so it sounds like it's downloading it again. On Steam, the update was ~20GB. Still pretty ridiculous for what is essentially a patch though.
sdflhasjd··on Ask HN: Is React Native still popular?
Flutter is React Native jank times two because it tries to render the entire UI itself.

MAUI has just gone through a rough migration from Xamarin and has some maturing to do, and developers are feeling neglected by Microsoft.

Cordova is Electron for phones - just do a PWA.

Kotlin multiplatform is good, but the Compose multiplatform has only Alpha support for iOS.

sdflhasjd··on Ask HN: Is React Native still popular?
> better, faster and cheaper

Better is subjective, faster - in my opinion - is no longer as much of a factor with even cheap modern phones unless you're doing something like AR. Not sure how you can build two native apps for cheaper though.

Jank... I agree there a little. I would say most of it can easily be avoided though if you've got developers who have native experience and know what they're looking at.

sdflhasjd··on Why are we being DDoSed by Cloudflare?

sdflhasjd··on You don't need JavaScript for that
The big thing you didn't mention is accessibility. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, just a few lines of javascript will let you break a user interface in so many subtle ways.

sdflhasjd··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
I internally laughed by ass off when I found out my mostly technology inept mother now uses lemmy instead of reddit.

I entirely quit it myself, and when I do end up driving bythe more niche subreddits from typical search results, I find that it feels way more dead.

sdflhasjd··on Email obfuscation: What still works in 2023?
Given that the percentages of blocked spam are just 17, 50, 67 & 83, it appears that the sample was likely just 6 spam emails which isn't a lot. Also doesn't really explain the methodology. I assume it's against a control of no obfuscation which was the 6 emails.
